Basketball rules the schedule for the final time this season, as only tennis holds a scrimmage this week beyond the hardcourt for the Sharks. However, next week will see several teams coming to a field near you! All eyes will be on Miami Shores with a consequential matchup across county lines for the Buccaneers and Sharks.
MELBOURNE, Fla.– Finishing the regular season on a high note, NSU swimmer Sasha Maslova picked up her fifth Sunshine State Conference Female Swimmer of the Week honor of the season, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.

Serving as the third leg in the relay, Maslova and her fellow Sharks won the event in 1:45.45. MELBOURNE, Fla. – For the second time this season, senior-forward Jordan Tully has been recognized for her stellar play on the court. After winning the SSC Defensive Player of the Week on Dec. 23, Tully has now captured her first career SSC Player of the Week honor as announced by the league office Monday afternoon. NSU is currently riding a three-game win streak after finishing the week 2-0 in conference play with wins over Palm Beach Atlantic (75-55) and Embry-Riddle (84-71).
In a blowout victory over PBA, Tully recorded a career-high 29 points on 13-of-24 shooting from the field, then immediately followed it up with a game-high 27 points (10-of-16) against ERAU. In addition to her 56 points while shooting 58 percent from the field, Tully pulled down 13 rebounds to go along with five steals (career-high 3 vs. ERAU), three assists, two blocks and recorded her first two triples of the season in a strong offensive performance this week.
Tully has now scored 20+ points in seven games this season, including each of her past three contests. The Canadian has now pushed her points per game total to 18.3, two points higher than anyone in the SSC, while maintaining the leagues highest field goal percentage at 59.8.
In addition to her strong play on the offensive end, Tully ranks second in the SSC in number of blocks and average blocks per game, with 21 and 1.3 respectively. After finishing with 29 total blocks a season ago, Tully is well on pace to eclipse that mark in her second season at NSU.
“Jordan has been working very hard to push herself to the next level and her recent dominating production is a testament to her great effort, said head coach LeAnn Freeland-Curry. We are very proud of the player and leader Jordan is becoming at such a critical time in our season.”
This marks the fourth honor the Sharks have received this season from the SSC league office and as a result of the strong play by NSU, they now have a chance at winning four straight games for the second time this season as they won four consecutive games from Dec. 7 – Dec. 21. The Sharks will travel south to Miami Shores on Wednesday night to take on Barry for the first time this season, before returning home to face Tampa and Saint Leo.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla – Shark pride was in full effect this past weekend as several NSU rowing alumni made the trip into town Saturday afternoon to reconnect, as well as share some insight on their experiences with current student-athletes.
After briefly mingling in an informal setting, a three panel discussion moderated by university staff and faculty gave way to alumni’s Taylor Smith, Nicki Brugler, Heather Pinero and Lauren DeCicco to speak about their time as a student-athlete at NSU. The crowd of NSU rowers listened closely to the alumni speak about their careers post-graduation and what they took away from their time as a Shark that helped them prepare for the professional world. Following the presentations, both the alumni and current student-athletes got the chance to discuss past stories and create a friendship based off of their common experiences. “Our current squad of athletes are always excited to learn more about the alumni and how their memories differ from their own,” said head coach Devin Fay.
Later that night, the alumni went to dinner with the coaching staff to reconnect and prepare for Sunday’s friendly race. On a beautiful and sunny morning around 9AM, NSU lined-up an upper class boat (with sophomores, juniors & seniors) and a freshman boat to feature against eight alumni in three short, high-intensity pieces. For the Sharks, it was their first opportunity to enjoy some friendly competition out on the intercostal waters.
“All in all, it was a special weekend for NSU rowing and we really appreciate the alum coming back to share their experiences, added Fay. The passion, care and pride is really growing within our team and the alumni base and its really is great to see.”

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Overcoming a rough first quarter, the Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team broke out in a big way to win their third consecutive game, all three at home and by double-digits, this time by an 84-71 margin over Embry-Riddle at the Rick Case Arena on Saturday afternoon in Sunshine State Conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
1ST QUARTER | It took over two and a half minutes for the Sharks to get on the board, committing turnovers on three straight early possessions, as the Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead. They finally did score their first points with a Janiffer Rodriguez free throw, then their first field goal just seconds later from a Jordan Tully layup off the offensive rebound. Turnovers continued to plague the team, with three more before their next field goal inside the 5:00 mark, and the Eagles took a 10-point lead (15-5) just before the clock hit three minutes. The Sharks scored a quick five points, but the Eagles got them right back, and Sarah Kelly ended the frame with a layup to cut the deficit back to eight, at 20-12.
2ND QUARTER | The Sharks got another five points in the first minute with a Hailey Conley and another layup by Tully. Then, thanks to three straight Embry-Riddle turnovers, the Sharks were able to get within one on a Maria Bardeeva layup. The Eagles responded with three consecutive layups, however, to put the Sharks in a seven-point hole, 26-19. The Sharks turned a corner from there, though, as the defense stepped up to force 11 out of 12 empty possessions, including three turnovers and nine straight missed field goals — four layups, four jumpers and one 3-pointer. Meanwhile, the offense ended the half by making eight of their last 13 attempts, with a 19-2 run in a six-minute span. The Sharks finally took their first lead on another Tully layup just before the halfway point, a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game. A steal and Fastbreak layup for Conley put them up by 10 (38-28) for the first time, before the Eagles hit a 3-pointer and free throw before the break.
3RD QUARTER | A pair of three-point plays – first Conley from outside, then an old-fashioned by Tully – put the Sharks back up by 10, before the Eagles got within five, but that would be the closest margin for the rest of the game, as the Sharks exploded on another big streak, this time 11 in a row, and never saw their lead drop back into single digits, with the margin at a comfortable 15 points heading into the final period.
4TH QUARTER | A 10-2 run midway through the fourth gave them their largest lead of the game at 21 points (80-59), and a Bardeeva layup with 4:43 remaining meant they were just three points away from giving the loyal crowd free Blaze Pizza, but turnovers on seven consecutive possessions put that in danger, and despite a final late Tully layup, they dribbled out their final possession, and after late teases by the men’s squad in their last two games, the fans continue to be denied.
STATS OF THE NIGHT:
Tully once again led the team in scoring, this time with 27 points, her seventh game this season with 20 or more and her fourth 25-point effort, as she continues to lead the SSC with 18.3 points per game. Her 10-of-16 performance from the field also maintains her standing atop the conference’s shooting leaders, at 59.8%. Tully added seven rebounds and a career-high three steals and made six of her seven attempts at the charity stripe.
Conley, meanwhile, extended her 3-point lead, with five more in 11 attempts. She posted her third double-double of the year, all in the last three games, with 21 points and 10 boards, shooting 8-of-16 overall and contributing four assists and a career-high four steals of her own.
Bardeeva had her best game of the season, with season-highs of 16 points and seven field goals out of nine tries, in addition to five rebounds.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
The Sharks’ 84 points represent a season-high, as does their 60.7% field goal percentage, and their best mark since they set the all-time record of 64.4% against Concordia on Dec. 18 of last season. It was also the first time they shot over 60% in conference play since Dec. 7, 2013, when they set the program’s single-game points record of 110 by shooting 64.5%.
The Sharks shot 64.4% (29-45) from the field as a team from the second quarter on, and over 60% in each individual quarter, including 71.4% (10-14) in their 29-point third. They also outscored the Eagles 44-24 in the paint over that stretch.
Overall, the Sharks dominated the middle two quarters to the tune of a 55-32 margin.
With three straight double-digit wins, by an average margin of 17.7 points, the Sharks are now scoring more points than they’ve allowed for the first time all season, at 1141 (71.3 per game) to 1137 (71.1 per game).
It’s their first three-game streak of double-digit wins since last January 12-30, when they won five consecutive SSC matchups by an average of 24.2 points, including the middle three in a row by at least 20, with the last two of that stretch against Palm Beach Atlantic and Embry-Riddle by 25 and 21, respectively.
UP NEXT: The Sharks will hit the road for the first time in two weeks on Wednesday, making the short trip down to Miami Shores to face off with the Barry Buccaneers. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Connor Zinaich scored five of his team-high 23 points in the final minute, including the go-ahead free throw with 3.6 seconds remaining, as No. 9 Nova Southeastern survived Embry-Riddle by a final score of 83-82 on Saturday night at the Rick Case Arena. The Sharks trailed by as many as six with 3:12 to play, yet made just enough timely plays down the stretch to stave off the upset. Zinaich led four players in double figures, with Mark Matthews adding 17 points and nine rebounds to go along with Nick Smith’s 11 points and nine assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 1st Half | The Sharks sizzled early from beyond the arc, collecting four three-pointers from four different players to race out to a 12-4 advantage a little over three minutes into the ball game. The Eagles would respond, though, with seven unanswered points until an RJ Sunahara lay-up ended the run. NSU had very few answers inside for ERAU’s Luka Majstorovic, who finished the night with a game-high 34 points on 15-of-18 from the field. The big man barely needed 10 minutes to reach 14 points, as his efforts kept the Eagles down just 24-20 midway through the half. A Matthews put-back handed the Sharks their first double-digit lead at the 6:33 mark, which grew to as many as 13 following a pair of Sunahara free throws. However, NSU would record only one field over the final 4:28 of the half, as the Eagles capped a 15-2 run with a buzzer-beating three to knot up the contest at 44-44 heading into the break.
2nd Half | An early bucket at the start of the second half handed ERAU its first lead since the opening minutes of the ball game. Neither side would create much separation until back-to-back Matthews lay-ups stretched the margin to 66-59 with 8:30 to go. With the lead only four, ERAU’s Tylin Lockett-Fuller drilled a pair of three’s to put the Eagles on top 71-70. Another Lockett-Fuller trey on the ensuing possession stretched the margin to four in favor of ERAU before a Romeo Crouch triple stunned the NSU crowd, as the Sharks were all the sudden staring at a six-point deficit with just 3:12 showing on the clock. A much-needed three the next time down the floor by Eddie Puisis cut the deficit in half. Still, NSU found itself down 81-76 with only 1:32 remaining. A Matthews bucket pulled the Sharks back to within three. Following a key defensive stop, Matthews then dished to Zinaich, who finished at the rim plus the foul to make it an 81-81 contest with only 37 seconds to play. A Puisis foul on the other end prevented an easy two, yet after splitting 1-of-2 at the line, Majstorovic gave the Eagles a one-point edge. With no timeouts in their pocket, the Sharks pushed the ball up ahead off the rebound, when Zinaich forced a whistle with only 3.6 seconds to go in regulation. Having hit 7-of-9 at the line in the game already, the redshirt senior calmly drained both attempts, as NSU regained the lead. ERAU had one final chance, but Crouch’s off-balance heave at the buzzer missed left, allowing the Sharks to hold on for the dramatic victory.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
The Sharks are now 3-2 in games in which they’ve been outrebounded after losing the battle of the boards 33-30 on Saturday.
NSU has now won four straight in the series against ERAU.
STATS OF THE NIGHT:
NSU turned the ball over just seven times on Saturday, while forcing ERAU into 16 miscues.
Puisis and Matt Weir combined for six of the Sharks’ nine three-point makes. Puisis has now scored in double figures in each of the last three games.
UP NEXT: In a battle atop the Sunshine State Conference standings, NSU will head to Miami Shores next Wednesday to take on Barry. The two programs have combined to win each of the last three SSC regular season titles. MELBOURNE, Fla. – Looking to build off its first 30-win season since 2014, the Nova Southeastern softball team has been projected to finish sixth by the league’s coaches in the Sunshine State Conference Preseason Poll, announced on Friday.
The Sharks earned a total of 56 points, nine more than seventh-place Palm Beach Atlantic. On the receiving end of seven first-place votes, Rollins topped the poll for the first time since 2015. Defending SSC champion Florida Tech landed runner-up with three first-place votes, while Saint Leo and Tampa captured a share of third after collecting an identical 80 points apiece. Embry-Riddle rounded out the preseason Top-5.

The Sharks will look towards the big bats of junior transfers Anina Fernandez and Juliana Speranza to step up at the plate, while Shark fans can expect to see Savannah Foster and Emiy Hess split a majority of the time in the circle for NSU.
Opening Day for the Sharks is set for Jan. 31, where they’ll face both Lubbock Christian and West Alabama in the DII Gulf Shores Invitational. To stay up-to-date with the Sharks throughout the season, follow them on Twitter @NSU_Softball.
