#25 Sharks Split SSC Doubleheader With Eagles

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The #25 ranked Nova Southeastern Softball team split a doubleheader matchup with the Embry-Riddle Eagles on Saturday afternoon from the ERAU Softball Stadium. A two-RBI performance from Gianna Russo led the Sharks to a 5-2 victory in game one.

How it Happened

TOP 4th – In what was a tight affair through four innings, a fielding error by the Eagles broke the stalemate and allowed Brenna Lokeinsky to come home for the first Shark run of the game. Shortly after, with the bases loaded, Maliyah Lawson was walked, bringing Gianna Russo home to put the Sharks ahead 2-0. 

BOT 4th – ERAU put their first run on the board to cut into NSU’s lead. 

TOP 5th – Gianna Russo singled to center field, bringing two runners across home plate. Ryleigh Langwell joined the action with an RBI single to left field, putting the Sharks up 5-1. 

BOT 5th – Embry-Riddle tacked on another run but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback as Nova Southeastern secured the 5-2 game one victory.

How it Happened

TOP 3rd – The Sharks took an early 2-0 after a sacrifice fly from Alexis Smith and an RBI double by Alyssa Drogemuller

BOT 3rd – Embry-Riddle answered with a flurry of runs to take a 4-2 lead. 

TOP 4th – A sacrifice bunt from Tori Copeland brought home the third Shark run of the game.  

BOT 5th – ERAU continued to apply pressure, tacking on two more runs to extend their lead to 6-3.  

TOP 6th – NSU wasn’t going away easily as RBIs from Langwell and Alexis Smith cut the Sharks deficit to one run. 

BOT 6th – The Eagles countered with two more runs, ultimately securing the 8-5 SSC victory over the Nova Southeastern Sharks.  

What's Next

The Sharks will return to the AD Griffin Sports Complex on Friday, April 19th where they will take on Florida Southern in game one of a three-game SSC series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

#25 Sharks Drop SSC Series Opener against Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The #25 ranked Nova Southeastern Softball team dropped their SSC series opener against Embry-Riddle on Friday evening from the ERAU Softball Stadium. Madison Fine earned the lone RBI for the Sharks.

How it Happened

TOP 1st – Fine got the action started with a single through the left side, bringing in Ryleigh Langwell for the first run of the game.  

BOT 1st – The Eagles answered with two runs to take the 2-1 lead.  

TOP 3rd – A fielding error by the Eagles allowed Alyssa Drogemuller to come across home plate, tying the game at two apiece. 

BOT 3rd – ERAU reclaimed the lead with an RBI single to right center.  

TOP 4th – Another error by Embry-Riddle brought home another Shark run to once again bring the game to a tie.  

BOT 5th – The Eagles tacked on two runs, pushing them ahead 5-3. 

BOT 6th – Embry-Riddle wasn’t done yet, putting another run on the board and ultimately securing the 6-3 SSC victory over Nova Southeastern. 
 

What's Next

NSU will return tomorrow to complete the SSC series against the Golden Eagles in a doubleheader at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

#25 Sharks Sweep Flagler in Doubleheader Action

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The #25 ranked Nova Southeastern Softball team completed the doubleheader sweep over Flagler on Tuesday evening from Flagler Field. NSU was led by multiple RBIs from five different players in their 11-2 game-one victory. The Sharks followed that up with a thrilling 11-10 win in game two, led by a two-home run game from Gianna Russo

BOT 2nd – The Saints weren’t backing down, hitting a home run to bring the score to 3-2. 

TOP 3rd – NSU’s run barrage continued as a two-RBI single from Brenna Lokeinsky pushed the Sharks ahead 5-2.  

TOP 5th – Lawson’s stellar day continued as she batted in another run to extend NSU’s lead to four runs. 

TOP 6th – NSU continued to apply the pressure, tacking on five runs, thanks to two RBIs from Aubrey Hutzler and a three-run home run by Gianna Russo. Nova Southeastern would ultimately secure the victory, taking down Flagler 11-2 in game one.

TOP 1st – Aubrey Hutzler kicked off the action with an RBI single to center field. Shortly after, the Sharks tacked on another run off of a wild pitch by the Saints, putting NSU ahead 2-0.

BOT 1st – Flagler put three runs on the board to take a 3-2 lead.

TOP 2nd – Gianna Russo tied the game at three apiece after a solo home run to right field.

TOP 3rd – With two runners on base, Brenna Lokeinsky joined the home run action, hitting a three-run homer to left center. The home run barrage continued as Russo hit her second home run of the game to put the Sharks up 7-3. 

TOP 4th – NSU’s surge continued as RBIs from Madison Fine and Hutzler gave the Sharks a six-run advantage.

BOT 4th – The Saints cut into the Sharks lead, tacking on two runs to bring the score to 9-5.

BOT 6th – Flagler continued to fight, putting two more runs on the board and bringing their deficit to one run.

TOP 7th – NSU extended their lead to 11-8 thanks to RBIs from Ryleigh Langwell and Alyssa Drogemuller

BOT 7th – Flagler tacked on two more runs to cut the Sharks lead to one run but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback. Nova Southeastern would go on to secure the 11-10 victory and complete the doubleheader sweep over the Saints.

Alyssa Drogemuller Named SSC Player of the Week

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference announced the Players of the Week for the week of April 1 – April 7, on Monday afternoon. Nova Southeastern Sharks student-athlete Alyssa Drogemuller (Softball) earned honors following her performances this past week.     

Drogemuller picks up Player of the Week after leading Nova Southeastern in a sweep of Saint Leo from the plate and circle. The Sharks’ lead off hitter was 6-for-8 at the plate with three runs batted in, three runs scored, two walks, and two HBP. The Mokena, Illinois product finished the week with a .750 batting average, .833 on-base percentage, and a 1.000 slugging percentage in three games against Saint Leo. Drogemuller tossed 15 innings in the circle, allowing five runs (two earned), three walks, and 17 hits. She struck out five Lions, earned two wins, and registered a 0.93 ERA.

#25 Sharks Complete Series Sweep Over Lions

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The #25 ranked Nova Southeastern Softball team completed the series sweep over the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday afternoon from the AD Griffin Sports Complex. NSU took down the Lions 8-0 in game one and 6-1 in game two to secure the doubleheader sweep.

How it Happened

BOT 2nd – Gianna Russo kicked off the scoring for the Sharks with a sacrifice fly, bringing Hutzler home to put the Sharks ahead 1-0. 

BOT 4th – Russo picked up where she left off, earning another sacrifice fly, this time batting in Brenna Lokeinsky for the Sharks second run of the game. 

BOT 5th – The Sharks tacked on another run, scoring off of an error by the Lions to put them up 3-0. 

BOT 6th – NSU’s surge continued as RBIs from Kerstyn Shaw, Alexis Smith, Madison Fine, Hutzler, and Tori Copeland put the Sharks up 8-0, ultimately securing the game-one victory over the Lions.

BOT 4th – Drogemuller continued her stellar series, singling to left center and bringing Kerstyn Shaw across home plate for another Shark run. Ryleigh Langwell joined the action, hitting an RBI single up the middle to put NSU up 4-0.  

BOT 5th – The Sharks run barrage continued as RBIs from Aubrey Hutzler and Brenna Lokeinsky gave NSU a six-run advantage. 

TOP 7th – Saint Leo finally got a run on the board but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback. Nova Southeastern would secure the victory 6-1 and complete the series sweep over the Lions.

NSU will head to St. Augustine, FL to face Flagler in a doubleheader matchup on Tuesday, April 9th. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 PM.

The #25 ranked Nova Southeastern Softball team took down Saint Leo in walk-off fashion on Friday evening from the AD Griffin Sports Complex. Late-game heroics from Brenna Lokeinsky propelled the Sharks to the SSC victory over the Lions.

BOT 7th – Nova Southeastern continued to fight, with two runners on base, Alyssa Drogemuller stepped up to the plate and batted in both runners to tie the game at four. 

BOT 8th – Brenna Lokeinsky would complete the comeback, hitting an RBI triple to left field, pushing the Sharks ahead 5-4, and securing the series opener against Saint Leo.

Brenna Lokeinsky batted in the game-winning run.

TAMPA, Fla. – The #25 ranked Nova Southeastern Softball team split a doubleheader matchup against #4 ranked Tampa on Saturday afternoon from the Naimoli Family Field. The Spartans took game one 8-1 but the Sharks bounced back with a 4-0 victory to close out the series. Tori Copeland led the Sharks in game two with a two-RBI outing.

Smith, Drogemuller Selected to Tucci/NFCA DII Player & Pitcher of the Year Watchlist

LOUISVILLE, KY. – After a great start to the season, Nova Southeastern Softball student athletes Alexis Smith and Alyssa Drogemuller have been named to the 2024 Tucci/NFCA Player and Pitcher of the Year Watchlist, announced on Thursday afternoon. Smith and Drogemuller are two of seven SSC athletes to be named on the watchlist.  

The list is broken down into the eight NCAA Regions (Atlantic, Central, East, Midwest, South, South Central, Southeast and West) with up to 15 student-athletes represented in each region. The list is compiled by the elected members of the NFCA Division II All-American Committee with one head coach representing each of the eight NCAA regions. To be eligible, a student-athlete’s head coach must be a member. 

Smith picked up right where she left off last season, leading the Sharks and the SSC with seven triples. The Tampa native also leads the team in batting average (.452), hits (47), RBIs (23), stolen bases (19), and is tied for first in home runs (3). Smith is coming off a weekend where she totaled two home runs, five RBIs, and three stolen bases, earning her an SSC Player of the Week honor for her performances.  

Drogemuller has been dominant in the pitching circle for NSU, leading the team in wins (11), ERA (1.26), strikeouts (40), and shutouts (5). The senior has had several incredible outings during her 2024 campaign, including a seven-strikeout performance against Illinios-Springfield, where she led the Sharks to a 2-0 victory. 

Both Smith and Drogemuller have been the driving forces for the Sharks, who are currently 21-8 overall and are sitting in fifth in the SSC standings with a record of 8-4. 

Voted on by the NFCA’s Division II All-American Committee, the 2024 Tucci/NFCA Player and Pitcher of the Year Award will be announced on May 27 following the conclusion of the NCAA Division II National Championships.

Alexis Smith Named SSC Player of the Week

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference announced the Players of the Week for the week of March 18 – March 24, on Monday afternoon. Nova Southeastern Sharks student-athlete Alexis Smith (Softball) earned honors following her performances this past week.     

Smith collects Player of the Week for her efforts in a two-game set at Valdosta State. The Sharks’ #3 hitter went 4-for-8 at the plate with two home runs, five runs batted in, and four runs scored. Along with her .500 batting average, she registered a .500 on-base percentage and a 1.250 slugging percentage against VSU. Smith’s top performance came in game one, where she went 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs scored, two home runs, five RBI, and two of her three stolen bases on the week. Defensively, the outfielder registered five putouts in five chances. This latest weekly award marks the sixth in her career.
