Lokeinsky Named Rawlings Gold Glove Recipient

LOUISVILLE, KY.- In her first season as Shark, Brenna Lokeinsky made her presence felt both offensively and defensively. Lokeinsky’s stellar defensive play at shortstop earned her the 2024 NCAA DII Rawlings Gold Glove award. 

Recipients of the Rawlings Gold Glove Award, presented by the NFCA, were selected by the NFCA’s NCAA Division II All-America Committee, following regional voting to identify the finalists at each position. The group utilized fielding statistics and school-submitted video to closely examine finalists and select the winners at every defensive position. Any student-athlete that competed in the current championship year and was nominated by their head coach who is a member in good standing with the NFCA was eligible for consideration for this prestigious accolade. 

Lokeinsky, an All-SSC Defensive team selection played a pivotal role in the Sharks success this season. The Cooper City native ranked sixth in the league in fielding double plays (10) and third on the team in put outs (108). Offensively, she finished tied for second on the team in home runs (4) and RBIs (35).

Drogemuller Earns NFCA All-American Honors

LOUISVILLE, KY.- Nova Southeastern Softball standout, Alyssa Drogemuller earned her second consecutive National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American honor on Wednesday afternoon. Drogemuller tabbed a spot on the NFCA All-America Third Team after an NFCA All-America Second Team selection in 2023.  

The NFCA All-America teams are voted on by the Association’s All-America Committees. In Division II, the committee is comprised of one member head coach from each of the NCAA’s eight regions. All student-athletes who were nominated  by a member head coach and voted to the first- or second-team All-Region squads were eligible for All-America consideration.

Drogemuller continues to make waves this season, adding another accolade to her collection. The Mokena native led the league with 24 wins and ranked in the top 10 in the SSC in ERA (1.65), and batters struck out (83). Offensively, the senior broke the single season NSU walks record (39) while also ranking first on the team in batting average (.383). Drogemuller was named to the 2024 Tucci/NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Year Watchlist and earned an All-SSC First Team selection and a spot on the NFCA All-South Region First Team.

Lawson Selected as Tucci/NFCA Division II Freshman of the Year Finalist

LOUISVILLE, KY. – More honors continue to roll in for the Sharks as freshman sensation Maliyah Lawson was named a finalist for the Tucci/NFCA DII Freshman of the Year award.  

Created in 2015, the award honors the outstanding athletic achievement among freshman softball student-athletes throughout NCAA Division II. To be eligible, student-athletes must come from a NFCA member institution. 

Lawson played an integral role in the Sharks success this season, finishing her 2024 campaign with a .331 batting average, which ranked her tied for third on team. The Roseville native also showcased her speed around the bases, ranking second on the team in stolen bases (15). Lawson’s best outing came against Flagler on April 9th, where she had three hits in four at bats, including her first career home run. To top it all off, she was also named the second SSC Freshman of the Year in program history, the first since Ashley Connor won it in 2022. 

The winner will be announced on Tuesday, May 21st.

Sharks End Season at NCAA South Region Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The #24 ranked Nova Southeastern Softball team had their season end Saturday afternoon after dropping two matchups against the number one-seeded Auburn Montgomery Warhawks in the South Region I Championship.

How it Happened

TOP 1st – The Warhawks kicked off the action with an RBI to take the early 1-0 lead.  

TOP 6th – In a scoreless affair since the 1st inning, AUM put another run on the scoreboard, extending their lead to 2-0.  

NSU continued to battle but couldn’t get a run on the board, dropping the game one matchup against AUM 2-0.

How it Happened

BOT 1st – AUM came out hot, pouring in a quick four runs to take a commanding 4-0 lead early. 

NSU continued to stay aggressive offensively but couldn’t overcome the hump, dropping today’s South Region Championship matchup against the Warhawks.

#24 Sharks Return to South Region I Championship, Takes Down #15 Warhawks

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The #24 ranked Nova Southeastern Softball team won their 11th consecutive game, taking down the #1 seeded Auburn Montgomery Warhawks and making a return to the South Region I Championship. NSU was led by a two-RBI performance from Alyssa Drogemuller

TOP 2nd – With runners on second and third, Alyssa Drogemuller batted in both runners, giving the Sharks an early 2-0 lead.  

The rest of the game featured a pitching duel between both teams with the Sharks ultimately securing the 2-0 victory over the Warhawks, sending them to the South Region I Championship.

#24 Sharks Take Down Lions in Opening Round of NCAA Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. –  The #24 ranked Nova Southeastern Softball team kicked off the opening round of the NCAA Tournament with a dominant victory over the #5 seeded Saint Leo Lions on Thursday afternoon from the AUM Softball Complex. NSU was led by RBIs from Alexis Smith (2), Aubrey Hutzler (2), Madison Fine (1), Alyssa Drogemuller (1), and Kerstyn Shaw (1).

How it Happened

BOT 1st – With two outs and the bases loaded, Aubrey Hutzler stepped up to the plate and batted in two runs to give the Sharks an early 2-0 lead. In the ensuing at-bat Kerstyn Shaw tacked on the third NSU run of the game. Shortly after, a fielding error by the Lions allowed another Shark run to come home. NSU’s run barrage continued as Alyssa Drogemuller was walked with the bases loaded, putting the Sharks up 5-0.  

BOT 3rd – NSU picked up where they left off, scoring three more runs thanks to a fielding error by the Lions and RBIs from Alexis Smith and Madison Fine

TOP 4th – Saint Leo finally got on the board, scoring one run. 

BOT 4th – Alexis Smith was then hit by pitch with the bases loaded, bringing the ninth Shark run home. 

BOT 5th – The Lions answered with a run of their own, but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback as Nova Southeastern secured the 9-2 victory.

What's Next

The Sharks will await the winner of the Auburn Montgomery/Spring Hill matchup and take them on tomorrow in the second round of the regional tournament, Saturday, May 10th, at the AUM Softball Complex in Montgomery, Ala. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM EST.

Smith, Drogemuller Named to NFCA All-South Region First Team

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – More postseason honors continue to roll in for the Sharks as Alexis Smith and Alyssa Drogemuller garner All-South Region honors for the second consecutive season. Both Smith and Drogemuller were recognized as All-South Region First Team performers by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA). 

The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association’s eight regions with first and second-team selections. NFCA member head coaches from each respective region nominated their student-athletes and voted for the teams. All the honorees are now eligible for selection to the 2024 NFCA Division II All-America squads. 

Smith adds another honor to her decorated resume. The All-SSC First Team selection has played a pivotal role in the Sharks success this season, leading NSU in batting average (.387), hits (65), triples (8), and stolen bases (30). The Tampa native also broke the NSU career stolen bases record with 130 stolen bases. Not to mention Smith earned SSC Player of the two times this season and was named to the 2024 Tucci/NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Year Watchlist.    

Drogemuller earned another All-South Region accolade after capturing All-SSC First Team honors earlier in the week. In 32 appearances in the circle, Drogemuller has made 26 starts en route to an SSC leading 22 wins and an impressive 1.68 ERA. The Mokena native also posted a WHIP of 1.11 across 178.2 innings pitched and had 24 complete games – nine of which had been shut outs. Offensively, the senior ranks first on the team in walks (39) which is a single season NSU record, and second on the team in batting average (.385) and runs scored (41). Drogemuller was also named to the 2024 Tucci/NFCA Division II National Player and Pitcher of the Year Watchlist.

#24 Sharks Ready for the NCAA South Region Tournament

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The number 24th ranked Nova Southeastern Softball team has their sights set on another deep postseason run, taking on No. 5 seeded Saint Leo in the first round of the NCAA South Regional Tournament.  First pitch is set for 2:00 PM EST at the AUM Softball Complex on Auburn Montgomery’s campus. 

 Quick Facts 

  • The Sharks have a 37-12 overall record, while Saint Leo owns a 37-17 record.  

  • The Sharks swept the Lions in an SSC series earlier in the season. 

  • NSU leads the all-time series 37-36. 

Breakdown

The Sharks are led by their high-powered offense and stellar defensive play. NSU had six athletes land on this year’s All-SSC teams (Alexis Smith, Alyssa Drogemuller, Aubrey Hutzler, Maliyah Lawson, Gianna Russo, Brenna Lokeinsky). Smith, Russo, and Drogemuller have been at the forefront of the Sharks offensive attack, combining for an impressive 161 hits, 94 RBIs, and 12 home runs. Maliyah Lawson, the SSC Freshman of the Year has also made her impact felt offensively in her first season as a Shark, ranking third on the team in batting average (.345). In the pitching circle, Drogemuller and Julia Allen helped lead NSU to a team 2.11 ERA, ranking third in the SSC, behind Tampa and Rollins. 

Saint Leo is led by Madyson Coe, the 2024 SSC Player of the Year. Coe has been an absolute juggernaut offensively for the Lions, ranking in the top three in multiple offensive categories in the league. Alexis Barbe and Hailey Beuer have also helped lead the Lions offensive attack, ranking 1st in the SSC in hits and RBIs respectively. In the pitching circle, Haleigh Thom has been dominant, she leads the SSC in batters struck out with an impressive 167 strikeouts.

The Sharks and Lions will open its matchup on Thursday, May 9 at the AUM Softball Complex in Montogomery, Ala. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM EST.

Lawson, Sharks Highlight SSC Postseason Accolades

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference released its 2024 All-SSC Softball teams on Tuesday morning. Maliyah Lawson headlined the awards, winning the second Freshman of the Year honor in program history, the first since Ashley Connor won it in 2022. Alexis Smith, Alyssa Drogemuller, Aubrey Hutzler, Gianna Russo, and Brenna Lokeinsky were also recognized by the SSC. 

Voting for the All-SSC softball awards was conducted among the league’s head coaches. 

Lawson garners Freshman of the Year honors in her first season as a Shark. The Roseville, California native has had an immediate impact for the Sharks since her arrival, giving her team 39 hits, 23 runs scored, 15 RBI, and 15 stolen bases during the regular season. Lawson ranks Top-10 in the SSC in batting average (.345) and on-base percentage (.452). 

Smith earned back-to-back All-SSC First Team selections after another stellar showing this season. The Tampa native ranks in the top five in the SSC in batting average (.381), hits (64), runs (47), triples (8), and stolen bases (30). She also broke the NSU career stolen bases record with 130 career stolen bases. Not to mention, Smith also earned two SSC Player of the Week honors this season. 

Drogemuller lands a spot on her first All-SSC First Team after her impressive two-way performance this year as a Shark. The Mokena, Illinois native has been dominant in the pitching circle, ranking first in the SSC in wins (22) and first on the team in ERA (1.68). Offensively, Drogemuller ranks first in the league in on base percentage (.565), and walks (39). She also broke the NSU single season walks record to go along with one SSC Player of the Week honor.

Hutzler tabs a spot on the All-SSC Second Team in her first season as a Shark. The Van Alstyne, Texas native has made her presence felt since being inserted in the lineup, showcasing her impressive hitting all season long. The sophomore finished the season with a .330 batting average, 33 hits, seven doubles, and 28 RBIs in 33 games of action.

Russo, another first year Shark has proven to be one of the better fielders in the league, earning a spot on the All-SSC Defensive Team. The second basemen’s 102 put outs ranks third on the team. Offensively, Russo has had a dominant showing, ranking first on the team in home runs (8), doubles (10), and OPS (1.042). 

Finally, Lokeinsky adds another All-SSC Defensive Team nod to her resume. The Cooper City native ranked fifth in the conference in fielding double plays (10), and fourth on the team in put outs (99). She finished with a .301 batting average, tallied 46 hits with 35 RBIs, and scored 28 runs.

The Sharks finished the regular season with a 37-12 record and 22-8 mark in SSC play and have earned the No. 4 seed in the South Region Tournament. 

Madyson Coe of Saint Leo was selected as the Player of the Year. Kate DeSimone from Tampa earns the Pitcher of the Year nod, while the league office recognizes Tampa’s Leslie Kanter as the SSC Coach of the Year.
