#22 Sharks fall against Washburn

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 22 Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball team was defeated 5-3 by the Washburn Ichabods on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex.

How it Happened

  • Anthony Karoly, the Sharks starting pitcher, started the game with a pair of strikeouts. 
  • Washburn got on the board first, scoring on an RBI double, and taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. 
  • The Ichabods extended their lead with three runs in the top half of the fourth inning. 
  • Washburn plated their fifh run of the contest in the top of the fifth inning. 
  • NSU was finally able to break through, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sparked by walks from Roylan Quevedo and Boris Pena, the Sharks took advantage of a pair of errors by the Ichabods and cut the deficit to 5-3.
  • The Sharks were unable to muster any more offense, falling to the Ichabods 5-3

#22 Sharks split doubleheader versus West Alabama

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 22 Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball team split Saturday’s doubleheader against the visiting West Alabama Tigers. The Sharks took the first game, defeating UWA 6-1, Matthew Corpas led the offensive effort tallying a pair of extra base hits – a double and home run – while Kyler Heyne earned his first win as a Shark, tossing seven innings with eight strikeouts. NSU dropped the second game of the twin billing 13-7.

How it Happened

  • West Alabama scored the games first run, taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI double in the first inning.
  • Jorge DeGoti got NSU on the board, tying the game, with an RBI single in the bottom half of the frame.
  • Matthew Corpas gave the Sharks the lead in the bottom of the second, driving in Ronny Medina with an RBI double. 
  • Later in the frame Roylan Quevedo added an RBI single, bringing in Corpas, extending the lead to 3-1. 
  • DeGoti extended the Sharks’ advantage with a solo home run – his second of the season – pushing the advantage to 4-1.
  • Corpas added a two-run home run – his second of the campaign – extending the lead to 6-1 in the sixth inning. 
  • Kyler Heyne picked up his first win of the season, striking out eight, across eight innings of work, before turning the ball over to Pedro Acosta who pitched the final two innings.

  • Xavier Moronta hit his first home run of the season, cutting the UWA lead to 3-1. 
  • In the top of the third inning, Justin Wachs drove in Ryan Cainzos with an RBI single, before Boris Pena added a two-run home run, giving NSU a 4-3 lead. 
  • Moronta extended the rally with an RBI single, plating DeGoti, and giving NSU a 5-3 lead. 
  • The Tigers scored five runs in the top of the fourth inning, taking an 8-5 lead. 
  • UWA tacked on five runs across the sixth and seventh innings, extending their lead to 13-5.
  • Sam Holthaus, pinch-hitting in the bottom of the seventh, hit his first home run of the season and put the score at 13-7.

#22 Sharks out-slug Erskine

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – After facing a 4-0 deficit in the first inning, the No. 22 Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball team rallied and came back to beat the visiting Erskine Flying Fleet 11-8 on Friday evening at the NSU Baseball Complex. Jorge DeGoti (3-5, 2B, 2R-HR, three RBI) and Richard Benitez (3-5, two RBI) led the NSU offense in the effort, while Keylar Gonzalez tossed seven innings, earning his first win of the season, while striking out 11.

How it Happened

  • Erskine opened the game with four runs in the first inning, taking advantage of a pair of throwing errors by the Sharks. 
  • Richard Benitez got NSU on the scoreboard with a two-run single, plating Zeth Rodriguez and Jorge DeGoti, putting the score at 4-2.
  • Justin Wachs led off the bottom of the third inning with a triple, his second of the season, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Boris Pena, as the Sharks cut the deficit to 4-3. 
  • NSU took their first lead in the game in the following frame, as Ronny Medina came through with an RBI single – driving in Rodriguez – later in the frame, Roylan Quevedo brought in Medina with a RBI ground-out.
  • Erskine tied the game in the top of the fifth inning, following an RBI single.
  • In the bottom of the frame, DeGoti drove in Pena with an RBI double, reclaiming the lead for the Sharks. 
  • The following inning, Wachs drove in Medina, extending the NSU advantage to 7-5. 
  • Matthew Corpas pushed the Sharks’ lead to 9-5 with a two-run double, bringing in Rodriguez and Jack Cue, as NSU took a 9-5 lead
  • Erskine hit a three-run home run, cutting the Nova Southeastern lead to 9-8, in the top of the eighth inning. 
  • DeGoti halted the Erskine momentum. hitting a two-run home run – his first of the season – putting NSU in front 11-8. 
  • Kader Rabagh earned his frst save of the season, striking out two, as NSU defeated Erskine 11-8.

Wachs Named NCBWA South Region Player of the Week

LAKELAND, Fla. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) has announced the first South Region Player and Pitcher of the Week for the 2025 season, Justin Wachs, a senior outfielder, earned Player of the Week honors after leading the 22nd ranked Sharks to a 3-1 opening weekend, which featured a walk-off win over No. 3 Catawba.  

Wachs opened the season continuing the stellar play from 2024, as over the four games he went 7-for-14, with four extra base hits, 12 runs batted in, and six runs scored. Wachs began the campaign in grand fashion, hitting a grand slam – NSU’s first hit of the season – in a 7-6 walk-off victory over Catawba. In a pair of games against Delta State, Wachs totaled eight runs batted in, while going 5-for-6 at the plate. The senior recorded a double, triple and home run in the double header. Through four games, Wachs carries a 0.500 batting average, a 0.611 on-base percentage, and a 1.143 slugging percentage, totaling 16 bases in 18 plate appearances, while also adding a pair of walks, two hit-by-pitches and a stolen base.  

On the defensive side, Wachs recorded seven putouts and added an assist in eight chances.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The 22nd ranked Nova Southeastern Baseball team was defeated 11-3 by the Wingate Bulldogs in the finale of the four-game opening weekend homestand on Sunday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex.

  • Wingate cut the NSU lead in half with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third, putting the score at 2-1.
  • The Bulldogs plated three runs in the top of the fifth inning, taking a 4-2 lead over NSU.

  • Wingate totaled seven runs across the final two innings, beating the Sharks 11-3

#22 Sharks power past Delta State

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – No. 22 Nova Southeastern took both games of Saturday’s doubleheader against Delta State, as the Sharks earned a pair of crucial region wins. NSU defeated Delta State 17-6 in the first half of the twin-billing, getting home runs from Justin Wachs, Roylan Quevedo, and Ty Torti, and ended the day with an 8-2 victory in which Wachs recorded four runs batted in along with a pair of extra base hits.

How it Happened
Game One

  • The Sharks jumped on the scoreboard quickly, plating a pair of runs in the opening inning as Boris Pena single down the left field line to drive in Roylan Quevedo; later in the inning, Anthony Stinson worked a bases loaded walk as Justin Wachs came into score, giving NSU a 2-0 lead. 
  • Delta State cut Nova Southeastern’s lead in half with an RBI single in the top of the second inning.
  • Quevedo hit his first home run of the season, as the Sharks extended their lead to 3-1 over DSU.
  • Delta State scored five runs across the fourth and fifth innings, taking a 6-3 lead over NSU.
  • With the Sharks needing a rally, following three shutout innings by Delta State, Head Coach Adrian Morales pressed all the right buttons in the bottom of the sixth inning as NSU plated ten-runs and broke the game open/ 
  • Zeth Rodriguez, Wachs, and Pena all reached base either by a walk or hit-by-pitch, loading the bases for pinch hitter Gabriel Esquivel who promptly delievered a two-run single. Ty Torti, also pinch-hitting, followed with an RBI knock of his own, tying the game at 6-6. 
  • Jack Cue recorded the Sharks third consecutive RBI base-hit, driving in Joel Cabrera and reclaimed the lead for NSU. 
  • After batting around in the inning, Rodriguez worked his second walk of the frame, as Torti scored on the free-pass. 
  • Quevedo drove in a pair with a bases-loaded single, pushing the lead to 10-6. 
  • Wachs hit his second home run in as many games, capping the inning, and giving NSU a 13-6 advantage. 
  • Torti recorded his first home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh inning, extending the lead to 14-6. 
  • Quevedo added another two-run base-hit, bringing his RBI total to five on the game, before Wachs finished his perfect day at the plate with an RBI single, giving Nova Southeastern a 17-6 lead.

  • Robby Medina extended the NSU advantage with an RBI single bringing in Rodriguez.
  • Quevedo added an RBI single, bringing in Ryan Cainzos, pushing the lead to 5-2 for Nova Southeastern
  • Wachs capped off his excellent day at the plate with a two-run triple, extending the NSU advantage to 7-2.
  • Pena drove in Wachs with a sacrifice fly, giving Nova Southeastern an 8-2 lead. 
  • Pedro Acosta tossed the final 1.2 innings in relief of Christopher Perez, striking out four and closing out the 8-2 victory for NSU.

Wachs, DeGoti lead #22 Sharks to walk-off win over #3 Catawba

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Led by a grand slam by NCBWA All-South Region Preseason honoree Justin Wachs and an extra innings walk-off single from Jorge DeGoti, No. 22 Nova Southeastern began the 2025 season with a 7-6 victory over No. 3 Catawba on opening night at the NSU Baseball Complex. Keyler Gonzalez, the opening day starter for the Sharks, threw a career-high seven innings and struck out five, while Federico Zapata earned the victory, tossing 1.2 innings in relief.

  • Nova Southeastern got their first base runners on in the bottom half of the third inning, as Richard Benitez, Matthew Corpas, and Roylan Quevedo all reached via walks, loading the bases for Justin Wachs
  • Wachs, the NCBWA Preseason First-Team All-South Region representative, notched the Sharks first hit of the campaign in grand fashion, belting a grand slam over the right-field fence and giving Nova Southeastern a 4-1 lead. 
  • Catawba plated another pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, taking advantage of an NSU error, making the score 4-3.
  • The Indians tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI groundout in the top of the sixth inning. 
  • Following back-to-back walks from Benitez and Ronny Medina, Quevedo drove in a pair of runs with a double and reclaimed the lead for NSU at 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh. 
  • Catawba tied the game at 6-6 with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning. 
  • Wachs led off the bottom of the tenth inning with a single and advanced to scoring position following a walk from Jack Cue. Jorge DeGoti gave the Sharks the walk-off victory with a single up the middle.

Wachs, Peña named to NCBWA Preseason All-South Region Team

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced the 2025 Division II Preseason All-South Region First-Team, No. 22 Nova Southeastern had two honorees as Boris Peña and Justin Wachs garnered recognition. Last season, across 45 games, Wachs led the Sharks in hits (59) and runs (45), while finishing tied for second in home runs (7), second in runs batted in (35), batting average (0.353). and total bases (93), and third in doubles (9). Pena hit a team-high nine home runs, while driving in 38 runs and collecting 96 total bases. Pena finished third on the team in batting average (0.346), hits (56) and doubles (11).

Sharks Ranked 22nd in NCBWA Preseason Poll

WINGATE, NC – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced the 2025 Preseason Poll on Monday afternoon. The Nova Southeastern Sharks were selected 22nd in the initial poll, the second highest ranked team in the Sunshine State Conference and third in the South region.  

The Sharks, led by Adrian Morales, finished the 2024 season with a 28-18 record and in third place in the Sunshine State Conference. NSU returns two All-Sunshine State Conference honorees from the 2024 campaign in Justin Wachs (first-team) and Boris Pena (second-team).  

Last season, across 45 games, Wachs led the Sharks in hits (59) and runs (45), while finishing tied for second in home runs (7), second in runs batted in (35), batting average (0.353). and total bases (93), and third in doubles (9). Pena hit a team-high nine home runs, while driving in 38 runs and collecting 96 total bases. Pena finished third on the team in batting average (0.346), hits (56) and doubles (11).  

 Nova Southeastern was previously tabbed for second in the Sunshine State Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll and third in the NCBWA South Region poll.
