Scales Earns WBCA All-American Honors

ATLANTA, Ga. – Nova Southeastern Women’s Basketball standout, Nicole Scales earned Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-American honors on Thursday morning. Scales was selected as an honorable mention. 

The WBCA NCAA Division II Coach of the Year, Player of the Year and Coaches’ All-America team are selected by the WBCA NCAA Division II Awards Committee from coaches and student-athletes who are nominated by WBCA member coaches. 

Scales, a First-Team All-Sunshine State Conference and 2024 NCAA South Region All-Tournament team selection earns her first All-American honors. The Park Ridge native led the Sharks offensive attack, ranking second on the team in points per game (13.6) and first in assists (104). Scales averaged 16 points per game through three games during the Sharks NCAA Tournament run.  

Head Coach LeAnn Freeland-Curry was tabbed as a finalist for the WBCA NCAA Division II Coach of the Year. The WBCA named Georgia Southwestern head coach Hana Haden as the 2024 recipient of the Pat Summitt Trophy presented to the WBCA NCAA Division II Coach of the Year.

#25 Sharks End Season in South Region Championship

VALDOSTA, Ga. – After a record-breaking 2023-24 campaign, the Nova Southeastern Women’s Basketball team saw their season come to an end in the NCAA South Region Championship against Tampa. The Spartans took down NSU 63-56 in a thrilling back-and-forth SSC duel.

How it Happened

First Half – The Sharks jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead capped off by a three-pointer from Kailyn Terrell. UT answered with a bucket of their own, but the Sharks continued to apply the pressure offensively, taking a 14-6 lead heading into the second quarter. With 7:16 left in the second quarter, Aubrey Stupp knocked down a jumper to give NSU an 11-point advantage. Tampa weathered the storm, clawing their way back into the game and cutting their deficit to four points as they headed into the half. 

Second Half – Scales jump-started a 10-4 Shark run to kick off the quarter, giving NSU a 38-29 lead. The Spartans wouldn’t go away, chipping away at the Sharks lead and ultimately taking their first lead of the game after a last-second layup put UT up 45-43 heading into the final frame. Both teams began to trade baskets in the fourth quarter before the Spartans ended the game on a 15-4 run to secure the victory and claim their second consecutive South Region title.

#25 Sharks Ready for South Region Championship Matchup Against #15 Tampa

VALDOSTA, GA – With a trip to the NCAA Elite Eight on the line, the #25-ranked Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team will take on fellow SSC member and third-seeded Tampa in the South Region Championship on Monday evening.   

This will be the third matchup between both teams this season with both NSU and Tampa taking a game on their home court. NSU took down UT 73-66 in their first matchup of the season from the Rick Case Arena, but Tampa bounced back and evened the series with a 74-76 OT thriller at the Bob Martinez Athletics Center. The last time Nova Southeastern faced Tampa in the NCAA tournament was during the 2013-14 season when the Sharks took down the Spartans in the South Region Championship. 
 

WHAT TO WATCH / HOW THEY GOT HERE 

NOVA SOUTHEASTERN 

  • Nicole Scales has been sensational all tournament long, averaging a team-high 16.5 points per game through two games of action. 

  • Alana Ellis came up big against number-one-seeded Valdosta State in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, scoring 16 points and making four three-pointers. 

  • Not to mention, the Sharks defense has been clicking on all cylinders, holding the high-powered Blazers offense to their fourth-lowest point total of the season (58). 

  • In the Sharks last matchup with the Spartans, India Shepherd scored a career-high 20 points, leading all scorers.  

NSU kicked off the tournament with an impressive victory over number five-seeded Lee, taking down the Lady Flames 71-61. The Sharks weren’t done yet, coming back a day later and defeating number one-seeded Valdosta State 69-58, snapping their 27-game win streak and undefeated home record.  
 

WHAT TO WATCH / HOW THEY GOT HERE 

TAMPA 

  • The Spartans have four players averaging double-digit points per game (Zoe Piller, Mya Giusto, Audrey Ramsey, and Sarah Jones).  

  • Mya Giusto was the main catalyst for the Spartans overtime victory over the Sharks in their previous matchup, scoring a team-high 20 points. 

In the opening round of the NCAA tournament, Zoe Pillar and Mya Giusto led UT to victory over familiar SSC foe Embry-Riddle, taking down the Eagles 76-70. The following day featured a rematch of the SSC Championship between the Spartans and the Eckerd Tritons in the second round of the tournament. Both teams traded baskets throughout the entire game, ultimately leading to five extra minutes in overtime. With under five seconds remaining in OT, Giusto was fouled as she drove to the basket. The senior knocked down the game-winning free throw to send Tampa to the South Region Championship.

#25 Sharks Take Down #5 Blazers, Advance to South Region Championship

VALDOSTA, GA. – The #25 ranked Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team returns to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since the 2014-15 season. NSU took down #5 ranked and number one seeded Valdosta State on Saturday evening, snapping the Blazers 27-game win streak and undefeated home record. Strong offensive efforts from Nicole Scales (16 points) and Alana Ellis (16 points) propelled the Sharks to victory over Valdosta.

How it Happened

First Half – The Blazers came out hot taking the early 14-5 lead. NSU answered with buckets from Morgan Kane, Kailyn Terrell, and Jess Moors cutting the Sharks deficit to three heading into the second quarter. Ellis jumpstarted a 10-0 Shark run to kick off the quarter, pushing NSU ahead 23-14. Both teams continued to battle it out throughout the rest of the quarter as the Sharks held onto a 29-18 lead going into the break.  

Second Half – VSU clawed their way back cutting the Sharks lead to three with 6:10 left to play in the third quarter. Alana Ellis then came down and knocked down a big three-pointer to put the Sharks back up six points. NSU continued to put pressure on the Blazers towards the end of the quarter, maintaining a 44-38 lead heading into the final frame. VSU brought the score to 46-44 after a flurry of buckets but the Sharks didn’t back down. Shortly after, six consecutive points from India Shepherd and Kane put the Sharks up 55-45 ultimately leading NSU to a 69-58 victory over #5 ranked Valdosta State.

#25 Sharks Open NCAA Tournament with Win Over Lee

VALDOSTA, GA. – The #25 ranked Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team keeps on dancing, taking down number five-seeded Lee University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Double-digit efforts from Nicole Scales (17), Aubrey Stupp (15), and Kailyn Terrell (11) led the way for the Sharks.

How it Happened

First Half – Back-to-back three-pointers from Terrell and Scales gave the Sharks the early 6-0 lead. The Lady Flames answered with five straight points to cut their deficit to one point with 6:51 left to play. Both teams continued to trade buckets before an India Shepherd steal led to a layup by Jess Moors on the other end, pushing NSU ahead 17-12. The Sharks would head into the second quarter with a 19-16 lead. NSU picked up the defensive intensity in the second quarter, going on a 12-0 run capped off by an Aubrey Stupp layup, putting the Sharks up 31-16. NSU kept their foot on the gas pedal, holding onto a 40-21 lead going into the break.  

Second Half – Scales kicked off the action with a layup off a steal from Stupp, giving the Sharks a 21-point lead, their biggest lead of the game. Lee clawed their way back and cut the Sharks lead to 10 points as they headed into the final frame. Nova Southeastern would win the game at the free-throw line, knocking down 16 free throws in the fourth quarter to secure the 71-61 victory over Lee in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

#25 Sharks Set to Take on Lee in NCAA Tournament

VALDOSTA, GA. – The No. 4 seeded Nova Southeastern Women’s Basketball team kicks off the NCAA Tournament against the fifth-seeded Lee University Lady Flames on Friday evening.
 

INSIDE THE MATCHUP

The Sharks dropped their previous two matches against the Lady Flames, falling 47-73 at the Rick Case Arena in 2021 and 49-71 in another home matchup during the 2017-18 season. NSU’s lone win against Lee came on November 15th, 2015, where they took down the Lady Flames 81-68 at home. This season, NSU fell in the first round against Florida Southern, and Lee dropped their matchup against Valdosta State in the Gulf South Conference Championship. 

On the other side, this is the Lady Flames seventh straight NCAA Tournament, dating back to the 2016-17 season.  

WHAT TO WATCH   

  • All-SSC First Team selections Morgan Kane and Nicole Scales look to lead the Sharks, averaging 15.4 and 13.4 points per game respectively. 

  • Not to mention All-SSC members Aubrey Stupp (All-SSC Third Team), India Shepherd (All-SSC Defensive Team), and SSC Freshman of the Year Kailyn Terrell also look to spearhead the Shark attack.  

  • Mallory Hampton will lead Lee, averaging an impressive 19.4 points per game, and is the only Lady Flame to average over 10 points per game this season.

Kane Selected to All-South Region Team

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Nova Southeastern Women’s basketball team continues to make waves this postseason as Morgan Kane was selected as a member of the 2024 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Women’s Basketball All-South Region Teams. Kane earned the nod on the All-South Region Second Team.  

The teams were voted on by the sports information directors in the south region. 

The All-SSC First Team selection adds another accolade to her collection. Kane has been a force for the Sharks all season long, leading NSU in points (15.4) and rebounds (8.9) per game. The Iowa State transfer has two SSC Player of the Week honors as well as several 20-point double-doubles. Her best outing came against Eckerd (1/17) where she poured in a season-high 25 points on 7-10 shooting and grabbed 14 rebounds. Kane’s play helped lead NSU to a program record 20 straight wins and their first Sunshine State Conference Regular Season title since the 2015-16 season.  

Kalifa Ford of Valdosta State collected the award as South Region Player of the Year.  

Nova Southeastern was tabbed as the fourth seed in the NCAA South Region and will face number five seeded Lee, Friday, March 14th at 7:30 pm, in Valdosta, GA.
