Sharks Alumni Weekend Continues to Gain Momentum

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla – Shark pride was in full effect this past weekend as several NSU rowing alumni made the trip into town Saturday afternoon to reconnect, as well as share some insight on their experiences with current student-athletes. 

After briefly mingling in an informal setting, a three panel discussion moderated by university staff and faculty gave way to alumni’s Taylor Smith, Nicki Brugler, Heather Pinero and Lauren DeCicco to speak about their time as a student-athlete at NSU. The crowd of NSU rowers listened closely to the alumni speak about their careers post-graduation and what they took away from their time as a Shark that helped them prepare for the professional world. Following the presentations, both the alumni and current student-athletes got the chance to discuss past stories and create a friendship based off of their common experiences. “Our current squad of athletes are always excited to learn more about the alumni and how their memories differ from their own,” said head coach Devin Fay. 

Later that night, the alumni went to dinner with the coaching staff to reconnect and prepare for Sunday’s friendly race. On a beautiful and sunny morning around 9AM, NSU lined-up an upper class boat (with sophomores, juniors & seniors) and a freshman boat to feature against eight alumni in three short, high-intensity pieces. For the Sharks, it was their first opportunity to enjoy some friendly competition out on the intercostal waters.

“All in all, it was a special weekend for NSU rowing and we really appreciate the alum coming back to share their experiences, added Fay. The passion, care and pride is really growing within our team and the alumni base and its really is great to see.”
