Joseba Torres Qualifies for NCAA National Championship

Gainesville, Ga – The number 12 ranked Nova Southeastern Men’s Golf team’s season ended at the NCAA South/SE Regional Tournament on Saturday afternoon. Joseba Torres was the lone Shark to punch their ticket to the NCAA National Championships after an impressive second-place individual finish (-7).

How it Happened

Torres got off to a hot start, scoring an eagle and a birdie on the front nine. He finished it off with a birdie on hole 16, en route to +1 performance for the day.  

Ivan Ponsdomenech (T22) scored two birdies in round three for NSU. 

Michael Hay (T54) scored a birdie on hole five before closing out the back nine with two birdies.  

Will McGhie (T54) started his day with a birdie on hole one before scoring three bogeys on the back nine. 

Jorge Berea (T86) had seven bogeys for the Sharks. 

What's Next

Torres will compete at the National Championship on May 21st in Winter Gardens, Fla.

#12 Sharks Finish Second Round of Action at NCAA Regional Tournament

GAINESVILLE, GA – The twelfth-ranked Nova Southeastern Men’s Golf team, after shooting three-over as a team, finished the second round of the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Tournament in fourth place on Friday afternoon at the Chattahoochee Golf Club. Joseba Torres (1st/-8) had a solid day on the course, holding onto an impressive lead after round two.

How it Happened

Joseba Torres shot two birdies on the front nine before tallying another birdie on the back nine en route to a 71 and -1 in round two.  

Ivan Ponsdomenech got off to a hot start, shooting a birdie in holes 4, 6, 7 and 8 respectively. Ponsdomenech would finish the round with four bogeys on the back nine. 

Will McGhie (T57) added two eagles for Nova Southeastern in the second round of the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Tournament.  

Michael Hay (T65) kicked off the action with two birdies on the front nine before closing out the round with three bogeys.

Jorge Berea (T65) registered three birdies and a bogey in the front nine but shot 76 in round two.

First Round of Men’s Golf NCAA Regional Rained Out

GAINESVILLE, Ga. – The first round of the NCAA South/Southeast Super Regional, scheduled for Thursday, May 9th, has been postponed due to rain. The No. 11 Nova Southeastern Men’s Golf team will now begin action at the regional tournament on Friday, May 10th, with 36 holes scheduled beginning with a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m.

Hay, Marino Headline Sunshine State Conference Awards

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference announced the 2023-24 All-Conference awards for the men’s golf season on Monday afternoon. Mike Hay, the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year and First-Team honoree, and Joey Marino, Coach of the Year, headlined the awards, while Joseba Torres (First-Team) and Will McGhie (Third-Team) were also recognized by the league.  

Hay enjoyed a dominant 2023-24 campaign as a graduate student. Hay recorded three first place finishes, including winning the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. Through ten tournaments, Hay has recorded an SSC-leading 70.2 adjusted scoring average and added six top-five finishes. He ranks 14th on Clippd’s scoreboard and holds a comparative record of 674-72-23 (0.891 winning percentage). Hay becomes the fourth Nova Southeastern men’s golfer to be recognized as the Sunshine State Men’s Golfer of the Year and the first since 2015. Hay also earns his third consecutive first-team all-Sunshine State Conference honor of his career.  

“Mike is having an unbelievable season and I know he is looking forward to continuing it throughout postseason play,” stated Marino. “All the wins and top finishes have been amazing, but I am most proud of the leadership role he has taken this season and showing the guys how we play Shark golf.” 

Marino is recognized as the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year, leading NSU to three wins and seven top-five finishes during the 2023-24 season. The Sharks placed top-five in all six events on their spring schedule, winning two events and added a pair of runner-up finishes. Marino becomes the fourth NSU Head Coach to be named Coach of the Year and the first since 2015.  

“I am grateful to receive this award and I know what an honor it is to achieve in the Sunshine State Conference,” said Marino. “Our league is one of, if not the, most talented in NCAA Division II and the coaches we have representing our universities and men’s golf programs are among the best in the nation.” 

Torres, joining Hay on the first-team, holds a scoring average of 71.1 through 30 rounds and a comparative record of 602-139-28 during the 2023-24 season. Torres began the season with a top-three finish at the National Preview and added a pair of top-five finishes – Copperhead Championship/Oct. 23 and the Saint Leo Invitational/Feb. 20. This marks the second All-Sunshine State honor of Torres’ career (2023 Second-Team).  

Will McGhie was honored with third-team All-Sunshine State Conference honors. McGhie held a 71.8 scoring average during the 2023-24 season and earned a comparative record of 495-191-32. McGhie finished inside the top-10 in two events – sixth at the Bobcat Invitational/Mar. 19 and ninth at the Sunshine State Conference Championship/Apr. 23.  

No. 11 Nova Southeastern begins play at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional on Thursday, May 9th, at the Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, Ga. NSU, the reigning NCAA Division II National Champions, enters the regional tournament as the top-seed from the South Region.

#12 Sharks Tabbed as top-seed in South Region

INDIANAPOLIS, IN. The NCAA announced the field of 80 teams and 32 student-athletes competing as individuals that have been selected to participate in regional competition of the 2024 NCAA Division II men’s golf championships.  

No. 12 Nova Southeastern Sharks will look to defend their 2023 NCAA Division II National Championship, the third title in program history, beginning at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional. NSU, under the direction of Head Coach Joey Marino, enters the national tournament as the top-seeded team in the South region.  

“The team has been trending in the right direction all spring with a lot of wins and top-three finishes,” said Marino. I am excited to see what these guys can do at regionals in North Georgia.” 

The Sharks have put together a solid season throughout the 2023-24 campaign, finishing inside the top-three in six events, while winning three tournaments. Mike Hay, the Sunshine State Conference individual champion, has been stellar during his final collegiate season, recording three individual wins – Matlock Collegiate Classic (2/6), First Federal Southeastern Challenge (3/12) and Sunshine State Conference Championship (4/23).  

The NCAA South/Southeast Regional features 20 men’s golf programs from the Sunshine State Conference, Gulf South Conference, Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Peach Belt Conference, South Atlantic Conference and Conference Carolinas. In addition to the 12th-ranked Sharks, the regional field, among the deepest and most challenging in the country, features No. 1 North Georgia, No. 2 Lincoln Memorial, No. 4 Georgia Southwestern, No. 7 USC Aiken, No. 9 West Florida, No. 10 Lee, No. 11 Lander, No. 13 Saint Leo, No. 14 Florida Southern, No. 15 Barton, No. 21 Coker, No. 22 Columbus State, No. 23 Shorter, No. 24 Barry, No. 27 Wingate, Tampa, Lenoir-Rhyne, Union, and Miles.  

The NCAA South/Southeast Regional will take place at the Chattahoochee Golf Club in Gainesville, GA., from May 9-11. The top five teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional will advance to the finals, May 21-25 at the Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge in Winter Garden, FL.
