No. 8 NSU Too Much for Short-Handed Spartans

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Facing a Tampa team that dressed only eight players, No. 8 Nova Southeastern dominated from start to finish Saturday en route to a 130-76 victory Saturday in Sunshine State Conference action. Four players reached the 20-point mark as the Sharks shot a collective 65.5 percent from the field in the effort. Eddie Puisis led the way, matching a season high with 22 points to go along with Shane Hunter’s season high of 21 in just 18 minutes off the bench, extending NSU’s current win streak to five in the process.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
1st Half | After being held to just 81 points in the first meeting with the Spartans, the Sharks lit up the scoreboard for 75 in the first half alone Saturday. On the receiving end of a friendly bounce, Hunter connected from beyond the arc to hand the Sharks an early 12-6 advantage. RJ Sunahara found Nick Smith for a transition three to run the margin to 17-6 before it reached 24-10 just over six minutes into the contest after Matt Weir drilled a triple off a feed from Mark Matthews. The score sat at 27-12 following a Tampa lay-up, yet the Sharks would hold the Spartans scoreless for the ensuing 5:09, as they rattled off an incredible 24-0 run over that span. Connor Zinaich tallied two of his 20 points on the night to cap the run, pushing NSU across the 50-point mark still with 8:15 to play in the half. Zinaich finished a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, while Puisis drilled three triples in the first half, including one in the final minute to send the Sharks into the locker room on top 75-32.

2nd Half | Holding onto the 43-point lead, NSU started the second half a bit lackadaisical, tallying only six points through the first 6:34. A Sunahara bucket would reenergize the Sharks, though, as the offense returned to form. An old-fashioned, three-point play by Zinaich pushed the margin back above 40, which is where it remained following a Sunahara tip slam midway through the half. Well in command, Puisis helped the Sharks reach triple digits for the 11th time already this season still with 9;27 showing on the clock. From there, head coach Jim Crutchfield was able to empty the bench, with NSU setting the new program mark for largest margin of victory in an SSC ball game.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • In addition to breaking the record for largest margin of victory in an SSC contest, the Sharks also set a new record for most points in an SSC affair (130).
  • NSU’s bench outscored Tampa’s entire team in the first half (37-32).
  • Eleven players tallied at least one made field goal in the win.
  • No player recorded more than 21 minutes for the Sharks on Saturday.

STATS OF THE NIGHT:

  • The Sharks’ 76 points in the paint matched Tampa’s entire output for the game.
  • NSU finished the contest with a 78-7 advantage in bench points.
  • NSU forced 27 turnovers Saturday, including 20 in the first half.
  • Matthews once again flirted with a triple double, collecting 20 points, seven rebounds and nine assists.
  • Smith (13) and Lukas Speidel (10) also scored in double figures, giving the Sharks six players to reach the mark in the victory.

UP NEXT:
NSU will be off during the week, but will return to action next Saturday at home against Saint Leo. The Sharks defeated the Lions in the season’s first meeting 92-77 back in early December. Sharks’ Winning Streak Halted at Four as Comeback Attempt Comes Up Just Short to No. 25 Tampa

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Despite a host of obstacles in their way — trailing 56-39 in the third quarter, 66% field goal shooting by the Tampa Spartans, and a record-low 14 rebounds – the Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team almost pulled off a stunner and were in position to tie or take the lead for much of latter half of the fourth period, but in the end, they fell one point shy, 67-66, in Sunshine State Conference action at the Rick Case Arena on Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
FINAL:
L, 67-66 RECORDS: Nova Southeastern Sharks (10-8, 6-5 SSC), Tampa Spartans (14-3, 11-0 SSC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

1ST QUARTER | The teams traded buckets on each of their first two possessions, with the Sharks down 5-4 after 76 seconds, but that would be as close as they get until the fourth, as the Spartans followed a missed a jumper with an offensive rebound and proceeded to go on a 12-0 run and make their next 10 field goals. The Sharks finally ended their four-and-a-half-minute drought with a 3-pointer by Sarah Kelly and an old-fashioned 3-point play for Jordan Tully to cut the lead back down to nine, 19-10, before Tampa got it up to double-digit territory again for the rest of the quarter.

2ND QUARTER | The lead oscillated between eight and 12 points for much of the quarter, as the two squads primarily went back-and-forth, save for a pair of Maria Bardeeva field goals halfway through and a 3-pointer and a layup towards the end that got the lead back up to 13, where it stood as the teams entered the locker rooms, with the Sharks trailing, 46-33.

3RD QUARTER | The Sharks were unable to put any real dent in the margin until the Spartans got the lead to a game-high 17 points, at 56-39, with 3:33 remaining. From there, the defense forced a missed jumper and three straight turnovers to end the period, which allowed the offense to score eight unanswered points, with five from Tully, including her third 3-pointer in the last four games, and a Hailey Conley layup at the end of the frame got the Sharks within single digits once again, with the score at 56-47 going into the final ten minutes.

4TH QUARTER | Back-to-back 3-pointers for Kelly kicked off another 8-0 run, as the defense forced four turnovers in five possessions, and Maria Bardeeva capped it with a layup to make it a one-possession game, at 58-55, with the Sharks scoring 16 of the last 18 points over a span of 7:05. After a Spartan layup stemmed the tide, Tully responded with a layup and the ensuing free throw for a 60-58 score. Kelly followed a Tampa jumper with her third trey of the quarter at 3:41, and the teams were separated by just one point (62-61) for the first time since those 76 opening seconds. The Spartans, however, responded with a 3-pointer of their own and another layup to lead by six, 67-61, with 2:29 left. Those would be the last points they would score, though, as Conley hit a pair at the stripe, and after the defense forced the first of three straight missed jumpers, Tully hit another layup to draw within two with 1:45 on the clock. She then followed the second miss by drawing a foul with just 39 seconds to go and a chance to tie the game. She made the front end, but missed the second, keeping the score at 67-66. Esabelle Levine rebounded the third miss and raced down the court for a potential game-winner, but her 3-pointer from NBA range went wide left and the Spartans emerged from the loose-ball scuffle with the board, extinguishing the Sharks’ hope of completing their miraculous comeback.

STATS OF THE NIGHT:

  • Tully had her fifth consecutive 20-point game, finishing with 22 points on 9-of-14 from the field.
  • Bardeeva scored 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting in the first half but was unable to sustain her pace, making just one of four attempts after the break, though she did pick off three steals in the second half to aid in the Sharks’ comeback attempt.
  • Sarah Kelly had her best game since her mid-season return last year, with 12 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting effort, all from beyond the arc, in addition to three assists. She set a new career-high for 3-pointers made and tied her field goals mark, while coming just two points short of best scoring output of 14, from Jan. 2, 2016.
  • Hailey Conley had 10 points and a team-high five rebounds but was 0-for-5 from long distance, her first game all season in which she attempted at least one 3-pointer without making any.
  • The Spartans shot 65.9% from the field for the game, and 50% or better in all four quarters, including a seemingly-impossible 12-of-13 (92.3%) in the first.
  • The Spartans had 12 of their 19 turnovers in the second half, compared to just four by the Sharks, resulting in a 12-4 NSU advantage in points off turnovers after halftime. Overall, the Sharks won the forced turnover battle, 19-6, and the points off turnover battle, 16-6.
  • Tampa dominated the boards, 32-14, and had 11 second-chance points, while the Sharks had just two. The first half ended with a 18-5 Spartans advantage, including 5-2 on the offensive end and a whopping 13-3 defensively, as the Sharks didn’t have their first defensive rebound of the game until 1:30 into the second quarter. The second half was a much closer 14-9, though not enough for the Sharks to avoid their lowest rebounding total in program history, which was previously 18, set against Lee on Nov. 25, 2017.

UP NEXT:
The Sharks will get a week off to recover before they host the Saint Leo Lions on Saturday, February 1, with tip-off from the Rick Case Arena set for 4:00 p.m. to accommodate the next day’s Super Bowl LIV. The previous meeting was a close battle, with the Sharks emerging victorious, 70-67, after Sarah Kelly made the game-winning buzzer-beater put-back.

Sharks Tennis Projected at Third in Preseason SSC Coaches Poll

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Officials from the Sunshine State Conference office released on Friday the results of the 2020 Preseason SSC Women’s Tennis Coaches Poll, projecting Nova Southeastern at No. 3 as voted on by the league’s coaches.

Ranked at No. 5 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), the Sharks garnered 65 points in the poll, entering the fourth year under head coach Doug Neagle. The Sharks are coming off their best season in 12 years, and are reaping the rewards in national acclaim, also rising one spot from their projection a year ago. Marking the best season since 2007, the 2019 Sharks went 22-5 and Neagle was the Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year. NSU also finished as SSC Championships runner-up and hosted an NCAA South Region tournament site. The Sharks retain the services of all but one key player from last season, including the 2019 SSC Freshman of the Year, now-sophomore Natalie Espinal, who ranks fourth nationally in singles and joins senior Sarah Wardenburg as part of the nation’s No. 1 doubles pair.

“Being the preseason number three in the SSC is a nice acknowledgement because it’s voted on by the coaches,” Neagle said. “We play in the toughest conference in the country, hands down. We have big goals this year, and if we only focus on our next opponent, work hard and have some fun, our goals can be reached. It’s not how you start the season, it’s how you finish. We can’t get satisfied.”

Three-time defending national champion Barry received 78 total votes and seven first-place votes to again take the top spot in the poll. Lynn finished second in the poll with 74 points and garnered two first-place votes from conference coaches. Behind NSU, Saint Leo holds fourth place with 59 points and Florida Southern sits in fifth with 49 points. Rounding out the preseason ranking are Tampa (35 points), Rollins (34 points), Embry-Riddle (27 points), Palm Beach Atlantic (20 points) and Eckerd (9 points).

Including NSU, the top four teams in the SSC poll are all represented in the ITA Top-10.

In addition to Espinal and Wardenburg, senior Daniela Obando ranks 38th nationally.

The Sharks kick off their season on Feb. 1 at home against seventh-ranked Flagler at the NSU Tennis Complex.

Below are the full results of the 2020 SSC preseason coaches’ poll.

Smith, Sharks Close Out Bucs in Gutty Road Win

The junior registered 15 of his team-high 21 points in the second half, as the Sharks beat the Buccaneers for the fourth consecutive meeting, and in the process, kept a hold of the top spot in the Sunshine State Conference race.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
1st Half | The Sharks faced an uphill battle from the opening tip, as Barry recorded the game’s first seven points and led 12-7 at the initial media timeout. NSU would withstand the early surge, though, and pulled back even thanks to a three-pointer in transition by Mikkel Kolstad, who returned Wednesday after missing the previous ball game. Connor Zinaich connected on a face-up jumper to hand the Sharks their first lead of the night at 16-14 with 13:22 to play. Another Kolstad trey knotted the contest at 22-22 midway through the half when Lukas Speidel joined in on the action with a deep three of his own, helping NSU regain a narrow, three-point edge. Both sides traded buckets until the Sharks ran off seven straight makes, including a second Speidel three, opening up a 36-28 advantage. Yet, in command of the glass through the first 20 minutes, Barry managed to keep the margin at a minimum. The Bucs erased the eight-point deficit late in the half, climbing back in front 46-44 following an Evan Walshe bucket from beyond the arc. Mark Matthews quickly quieted the crowd the next time down the floor by converting an old-fashioned, three-point play. Still, a buzzer-beating lay-up sent the home team into the locker room with a slim 48-47 advantage.

2nd Half | NSU remained down one a little over four minutes into the second half until exploding for a 12 -0 run in a span of only 2:02. Matt Weir sparked the spurt with a catch-and-shoot three off an inbounds pass before consecutive lay-ups by Matthews and Kolstad capped the stretch with the Sharks holding their largest lead of the contest at 71-60. Barry battled right back, however, with an 8-0 run and soon knotted the ball game back up at 78-78. NSU wouldn’t flinch, though, as the Sharks climbed back on top after an Eddie Puisis trey that was soon followed by a RJ Sunahara three-point play. The margin remained three in favor of the Sharks when Smith doubled the cushion with a timely three from the top of the key with 5:07 left to play. Smith later added a second-chance score and a strong isolation finish to keep NSU ahead by seven down the stretch. Yet, consecutive turnovers aided a Barry 6-0 spurt in just a matter of 46 seconds to all the sudden narrow the gap to 98-97 with nine ticks showing on the clock. Forced to foul, the Bucs sent Smith to line, where the junior would calmly sink both attempts to stretch the advantage back to three. Barry would miss the front end of a 1-and-1 the next time down, leaving way for Smith to finally put the game on ice with two more freebies in the waning seconds.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Through the first half of the SSC slate, the Sharks have picked up road wins over Florida Southern, Barry and Saint Leo, who along with NSU, currently make up the Top-4 in the league standings.

STATS OF THE NIGHT:

  • In addition to his 21 points, Smith added six assists to go along with a game-high four steals.
  • Matthews flirted with a triple-double in the effort, finishing with 17 points, 10 boards and seven assists.
  • The Sharks gladly welcomed Kolstad back into the rotation after the senior poured in 17 points off the bench, including 12 to lead all scorers in the first half.
  • After being outrebounded 25-17 and outscored 10-5 on second-chance opportunities in the first half, NSU returned the favor in the second, owning a 21-17 edge on the glass and an 18-8 advantage in second-chance points.
  • Off the bench, Kolstad, Puisis and Speidel combined for nine of NSU’s 11 three-point field goals.

UP NEXT:
NSU will return home this Saturday, where it’ll host the second annual South Florida Showdown in a matchup against Tampa. Bardeeva’s Game-Winning Three Extends Sharks Win Streak to Four

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – With just nine seconds to play in the fourth quarter and the game tied, 66-66, Maria Bardeeva confidently lined-up an open look from beyond the arc and converted the go-ahead basket en route to a 70-66 victory Wednesday night at the Health & Sports Center, matching a season-high four straight wins for the Sharks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

1ST QUARTER | NSU came out of the gates with the first punch just 18 seconds into the game as Jordan Tully’s lapup opened a quick 2-0 start for the Sharks. The lead would not last long because of the strong start by Barry’s Harriet Swindells who scored nine of the teams first 11 points, putting the Bucs up seven, 11-4 at the 4:39 mark. NSU would cut the deficit to just two when Esabelle Levine splashed her first three-pointer of the match but Barry once again would respond, extending the lead back to 18-11 after Swindells notched her 12th point of the opening frame. With momentum beginning to turn back into the hands of the home team after making three consecutive field goals, Iva Ilic connected for three from the corner it make it a four point game, 18-14. Like NSU has done so many times this season, they closed out the quarter strong after a three-pointer by Hailey Conley trimmed the lead for the Bucs to just one, 18-17. In the quarter, Barry scored 12 of their 18 points in the paint as six Sharks recorded a score in the opening period.

2ND QUARTER | The Sharks really took it to the Bucs defensively in the second forcing nine turnovers in the quarter. A steal by Levine sparked a 7-0 run for the Sharks after Bardeeva’s layup with 4:52 to play gave NSU the lead, 26-23. From there, NSU would hold Barry without a point for 4:36 as the Sharks would outscore the Bucs 7-2 in the final two minutes of the half, highlighted to a beautiful hesitation move by Conley driving the lane in the final seconds of the period. NSU held the Bucs to just nine points on 27 percent shooting, resulting in a 33-27 lead at the break.

3RD QUARTER | The Bucs would erase the six point defecit and tie up the game, 37-37, at the 7:34 mark. From that point, it was a back-and-forth match the remainder of the period, resulting in four lead changes and six ties. Conley’s late three-pointer with eight seconds to go forced an exciting final frame with the score tied, 52-52.

4TH QUARTER | The fourth quarter did not dissapoint for the excitment of the fans. After Barry took a three point lead, a triple by Levine and a perfect trip at the line by Tully pushed the lead back into the hands of the Sharks, 57-55. Barry continued to fight back, taking a 60-57 lead at the final media timeout with 4:52 to play. The Sharks re-took the lead after another big time conversion from beyond the arc by Conley, followed up by a Tully layup putting the visitors up 64-61, heading into the final two minutes. Four straight points for the Bucs gave them a two point lead with just 1:14 to play. However, the Sharks would tie it up after Tully’s eight point of the period knotted the score at 66-66, with just 55 seconds to play. NSU would buckle down defensively forcing a Barry miss and final possession for the Sharks without the shot clock running. With the defense sagging off Bardeeva from the top of the arc, the senior-forward took matters in her own hands knocking down a huge three-pointer to give the Sharks a 69-66 lead. NSU forced a missed off the late attempt by Swindells and secured their fourth-straight victory, 70-66.

INSIDE THE STATS:

  • Tully showed up big for the Sharks in the second half scoring 15 of her team-high 21 points in the game, pitching in with five rebounds and three blocks in 31 minutes of action.
  • Conley converted half of her attempts from long range (4-8) in an 18 point effort, pulling down a team-high six rebounds and recording three steals and two assists.
  • Bardeeva, the games hero, was a solid 6-for-9 from the floor, resulting in 13 points, to go along with three rebounds and two assists.
  • Levine, who lead the Sharks with a team-high +10, was a spark plug for the Sharks as she eclipsed the 28 mark in total minutes for the second time this season, finishing with nine points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
  • NSU dished out 18 assists and outscored the Bucs bench 16-10, highlighted by Levine’s nine points off the bench.
  • Both teams were strong in the paint, with the Bucs outscoring the Sharks 36-30.
  • In the first, third and fourth the Sharks shot an identical 6-of-13 (46.15 percent) from the field and were 6-of-14 in the second (42.86 percent)

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • NSU has now won a season-high four consecutive games, matching this year’s mark they achieved from Dec. 7-21.
  • Bardeeva’s game-winning shot was her second triple of the season (in six attempts), and just her fifth field goal from down town in 33 attempts in her career.
  • NSU hit nine threes in the game, the sixth time this season with nine or more.
  • Sharks recorded seven plus blocks for the second time this season (had season-high 11 vs. Findlay on Dec. 21)

Tully Earns First Career SSC Player of the Week Honor

MELBOURNE, Fla. – For the second time this season, senior-forward Jordan Tully has been recognized for her stellar play on the court. After winning the SSC Defensive Player of the Week on Dec. 23, Tully has now captured her first career SSC Player of the Week honor as announced by the league office Monday afternoon. NSU is currently riding a three-game win streak after finishing the week 2-0 in conference play with wins over Palm Beach Atlantic (75-55) and Embry-Riddle (84-71).

In a blowout victory over PBA, Tully recorded a career-high 29 points on 13-of-24 shooting from the field, then immediately followed it up with a game-high 27 points (10-of-16) against ERAU. In addition to her 56 points while shooting 58 percent from the field, Tully pulled down 13 rebounds to go along with five steals (career-high 3 vs. ERAU), three assists, two blocks and recorded her first two triples of the season in a strong offensive performance this week.

Tully has now scored 20+ points in seven games this season, including each of her past three contests. The Canadian has now pushed her points per game total to 18.3, two points higher than anyone in the SSC, while maintaining the leagues highest field goal percentage at 59.8.

In addition to her strong play on the offensive end, Tully ranks second in the SSC in number of blocks and average blocks per game, with 21 and 1.3 respectively. After finishing with 29 total blocks a season ago, Tully is well on pace to eclipse that mark in her second season at NSU.

“Jordan has been working very hard to push herself to the next level and her recent dominating production is a testament to her great effort, said head coach LeAnn Freeland-Curry. We are very proud of the player and leader Jordan is becoming at such a critical time in our season.”

This marks the fourth honor the Sharks have received this season from the SSC league office and as a result of the strong play by NSU, they now have a chance at winning four straight games for the second time this season as they won four consecutive games from Dec. 7 – Dec. 21.
