Sharks Ready to Kick-Start Spring with Home Opening Race

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. The Spring season has finally arrived and the Nova Southeastern women’s rowing team is eager to experience some friendly competition prior to the start of the competitive portion of their schedule. The Sharks will open up the 2020 campaign tomorrow morning at 7:45 a.m. on the friendly confines of the Hollywood Intracoastal for their lone home race this season, also serving as the Senior Day to nine NSU seniors.

The Barry Buccaneers will travel north to the Sharks’ home course Saturday morning, as both teams get an early test of where they stand as a unit in comparison to someone other than their own teammates. For the Sharks, a few of their top athletes will be absent for the opening weekend because of injury, serving as a great opportunity for some underclass rowers to get in the mix and for some, make their first career start on the waters for NSU. The opening race will feature just three upperclassmen and three sophomores, as well as four freshmen and three walk-ons making their Sharks debut.

“We are really looking forward to our first external test of the Spring, said head coach Devin Fay. Barry is a very fast crew, and they demonstrated that in the fall but were excited to get out and race on our home course, while hopefully getting some good fan support. At the same time, it’s early in the season and we are trying to stay focused on our goals coming out of this weekend.”

This marks one of two opening scrimmages for the Sharks before they really get into the swing of things in the middle of March. Tomorrow’s race will be a good preview of one of the top opponents in the SSC and allow NSU to compete with raised stakes.

“The objective is to try and to set the tone for the season, especially on how we approach race day, added Fay. These scrimmages will help get their feet wet on the expectations on how to prepare and execute as a Shark,” added Fay.

Following the scrimmage with Barry, NSU will travel up to Melbourne, Fla., on Feb. 29 to compete in a friendly race against defending SSC Champions, Florida Tech. To view the full 2020 schedule CLICK HERE

Tully Announced to CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Already well known around the Sunshine State Conference for her proficient scoring ability, Nova Southeastern forward Jordan Tully has also been recognized for her dedication off the floor after being named First Team Academic All-District by CoSIDA on Thursday afternoon.

The 2020 Academic All-District Women’s Basketball Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CoSIDA Academic All-America program separately recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA. To even be nominated, student-athletes must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average, must have completed at least one full calendar year at their current institution, and must have reached sophomore athletic eligibility.

Tully, who owns a cumulative 3.69 Grade Point Average as an undergrad, has upped that number to 3.96 while studying Conflict Analysis & Resolution as a graduate student. The Winnipeg, Manitoba native is just one of two players from the SSC to be selected.

In 24 starts in 2019-20, the Canadian has averaged an SSC best 18.1 points (on 54 percent shooting), 4.5 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 1.6 blocks which also tops the conference leaderboard. Tully has scored in double figures in 22 of the teams 24 games, scoring 20 plus in 10 of those contests, including a career-high 30 point effort at Rollins Feb. 5. In addition, Tully has also received two Player of the Week awards this season from the SSC.

Comprised of schools from the Gulf South Conference and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in addition to the Sunshine State Conference, Tully is accompanied on the All-District 5 First Team by Abby Bertram (Lee), Shyan Flack (Montevallo), Danielle Norquest (West Florida), Aryn Sanders (Alabama in Huntsville) and Nikki Tucker (Embry-Riddle).

“Jordan not only performs at a high level for NSU basketball on the court, but she also performs well in the classroom, said head coach LeAnn Freeland-Curry. Jordan is extremely intelligent and very dedicated to her academics, which is reflective of her high GPA in her graduate program, Conflict Resolution. Her ultimate goal is to become a human rights attorney and I’m confident in Jordan’s ability to make this a reality in the near future.”

Tully will now advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if applicable). Academic All-America honorees will be announced in mid-March.

Sharks Rowing Take Part in Fifth Annual Every Meter Matters Fundraiser

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla Last Wednesday at the University Center on the campus of Nova Southeastern University, the NSU rowing team held their fifth annual Every Meter Matters Fundraiser to support pediatric cancer research.

The team set up rowing machines and challenged their friends, as well as other students, to short, high intensity pieces. The goal was to track the total number of meters completed and ask for donations to pediatric cancer research through curing kids cancer.

“It was a really successful event and it’s a great way to give back to the community a bit, said head coach Devin Fay. It also gives people a chance to learn how to row and do it for a good cause.”

“We love throwing this event to help those children in need find a cure but also how we love that our team gets to interact with the public more, added junior Kassie Moss. It shows all the dedication and hard work we put into our sport on the daily, educates the public on rowing and also gives them an opportunity to give back, while having fun racing their friends.”

“The whole event of coming together like that creates such a happy and exciting environment and it’s really nice to experience that bond with our teammates outside of practice,” concluded senior Samantha Burgess.

The Sharks raised just over $1,600 and are currently still accepting donations in hopes of reaching their $2,500 goal! Please visit the following link to learn more about the cause or make a donation!

Sharks Coast to Road Victory at PBA

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Leading for all but the first two-plus minutes of the game, the Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team earned a much-needed Sunshine State Conference road victory, defeating Palm Beach Atlantic, 76-62, at the Rubin Arena on Wednesday evening.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
FINAL: W, 76-62
RECORDS: Nova Southeastern Sharks (12-12, 8-9 SSC), Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish (3-21, 1-16 SSC)
LOCATION: Rick Case Arena | Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
FOLLOW US: @NSUSHARKS on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube

HOW IT HAPPENED:
1ST QUARTER | The Sailfish scored the first bucket of the game, a three-pointer just 1:15 in, but the Sharks wasted no time matching it, as Makenna Drabick converted a three-point play on the very next possession just 23 seconds later. That kicked off an 11-0 run, and the Sharks never looked back, with a Jordan Tully layup giving them the lead for good at the 7:49 mark. They led by double digits on a layup by Hailey Conley with over three minutes still to play and settled for a nine-point lead by quarter’s end.

2ND QUARTER | The two teams combined to miss their first seven shots of the period before Annie Santucci hit from long range to start a 7-0 run and the lead never dropped back to single digits for the rest of the game. Clara Prasse made the last of the team’s four three-pointers in the frame, on just six attempts, to put the Sharks in front by 20 briefly – before the Sailfish scored eight in a row in the two minutes before halftime to cut it back down to a dozen.

3RD QUARTER | Conley dominated the third, with 11 of the team’s 19 points. Despite missing her first two shots out of the break, she made each of her last four field goals, as well as a trio of free throws, over the next 6:30. The team’s lead, meanwhile, oscillated back and forth between 13 and 18 for the entire period, finishing at 15 (58-43) following a Prasse free throw.

4TH QUARTER | Conley’s hot stretch continued into the early seconds of the final quarter, as she hit her second trey of the game almost immediately. Drabick followed with a pair at the stripe to set the lead at 20 once again. The Sailfish scored the next six, but they never got closer than that 14-point margin, which is where it ended at the final whistle.

STATS OF THE NIGHT:

  • Conley scored a game-high 21 points, shooting 7-of-15 from the field and made half of her four attempts from long range, as well as all five of her free throws. It was her highest total since another 21-point game last month vs. Embry-Riddle. She also entered in a bit of a three-point slump, shooting just 1-for-17 over the previous three games.
  • Santucci continued her strong play, posting her third consecutive double-digit effort, with 11 points on 4-for-5 from the field, including three from beyond the arc, all in the first half. She also matched her career high of five rebounds.
  • Santucci has 37 points on 11-of-22 (50%) shooting, including 9-for-15 (60%) from deep, in her last three outings. In her first 16 games of the season, she tallied just 28 total points, while shooting 10-for-33 (30.3%) and 5-for-25 (20%) on three-pointers.
  • Drabick and Tully scored 13 points apiece, with Drabick getting the rebound on PBA’s last miss with six seconds left for the double-double that Tully was one board shy of.
  • For Drabick, getting the start for the third game in a row resulted in her third double-digit rebounding total and her second double-double of the season, shooting 4-of-9 from the field and 5-of-6 on free throws.
  • Tully, meanwhile, added a career-high five blocks and a pair of steals to her line. She now leads the SSC in both scoring (434, at an 18.1 per-game clip) and blocks (38, 1.6 per game) and has 67 blocks in her 47-game career with the Sharks, averaging 1.4 per contest.
  • Janiffer Rodriguez also filled out the stat sheet nicely, with six points on 3-for-6 from the field, as well as dishing out a game-high seven assists, bringing down four boards and collecting a pair of steals.

UP NEXT:
The Sharks will look to complete another sweep this weekend, when they head up to Melbourne to take on Florida Tech, who the Sharks moved half a game ahead of in the SSC standings with their win and the Panthers’ loss to Tampa. The Sharks dominated Florida Tech at the Rick Case Arena, 80-61, back on Jan. 11. Tully had a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double in that game, while Drabick posted the first of her career, with 11 of each.
