Sharks Ready to Kick-Start Spring with Home Opening Race

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. The Spring season has finally arrived and the Nova Southeastern women’s rowing team is eager to experience some friendly competition prior to the start of the competitive portion of their schedule. The Sharks will open up the 2020 campaign tomorrow morning at 7:45 a.m. on the friendly confines of the Hollywood Intracoastal for their lone home race this season, also serving as the Senior Day to nine NSU seniors.

The Barry Buccaneers will travel north to the Sharks’ home course Saturday morning, as both teams get an early test of where they stand as a unit in comparison to someone other than their own teammates. For the Sharks, a few of their top athletes will be absent for the opening weekend because of injury, serving as a great opportunity for some underclass rowers to get in the mix and for some, make their first career start on the waters for NSU. The opening race will feature just three upperclassmen and three sophomores, as well as four freshmen and three walk-ons making their Sharks debut.

“We are really looking forward to our first external test of the Spring, said head coach Devin Fay. Barry is a very fast crew, and they demonstrated that in the fall but were excited to get out and race on our home course, while hopefully getting some good fan support. At the same time, it’s early in the season and we are trying to stay focused on our goals coming out of this weekend.”

This marks one of two opening scrimmages for the Sharks before they really get into the swing of things in the middle of March. Tomorrow’s race will be a good preview of one of the top opponents in the SSC and allow NSU to compete with raised stakes.

“The objective is to try and to set the tone for the season, especially on how we approach race day, added Fay. These scrimmages will help get their feet wet on the expectations on how to prepare and execute as a Shark,” added Fay.

Following the scrimmage with Barry, NSU will travel up to Melbourne, Fla., on Feb. 29 to compete in a friendly race against defending SSC Champions, Florida Tech. To view the full 2020 schedule CLICK HERE
