Sunahara, Yoakum Named D2CCA All-Americans

WEST HAVEN, CT. – The Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association (D2CCA) released its Ron Lentz National Player of the Year award and All-American honors for the 2022-23 season on Monday morning. RJ Sunahara (First-Team) and Will Yoakum (Second-Team) were the two representatives from the No. 1 Nova Southeastern Sharks Men’s Basketball team. 

Sunahara, the Sunshine State and D2CCA South Region Player of the Year, has had an incredible campaign for the top-ranked Sharks. The redshirt-junior has led the top-ranked Sharks to the Elite Eight for the second consecutive season. In 31 games, Sunahara is averaging 18.9 points and 5.3 rebounds, while leading the Sharks in blocks (51) and field goal percentage (60%).

Yoakum, in his first season with the Sharks, is one of two Nova Southeastern players to start in all 33 games during the 2022-23 season. Yoakum leads NSU in points-per-game (19.5), and is shooting 58% from the field and 52% from beyond the arc. The Delaware, Ohio-native has elevated his game during the postseason for NSU, averaging 24.5 points and shooting 58% from the field. Yoakum tied the program record for three-pointers (9) in the NCAA South Region Championship game against Alabama-Huntsville.

Sports Information Directors from NCAA Division II East Region schools and conferences selected the two All-Region teams. The process concludes with All-American selections announced in later this month. This is the second year the Division II Conference Commissioner’s Association has sponsored the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball All-Region and All-American teams.

The Division II CCA encourages and promotes Division II athletics and high standards of sportsmanship as important elements of higher education. The CCA is a key communications link among the conferences as they discuss views, policies and regulations that impact Division II intercollegiate athletics and works closely with the NCAA as a communications channel to NCAA Division II member colleges and universities.

#5 Sharks Defeat Mocs in SSC Action

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.  – The fifth-ranked Nova Southeastern Women’s Tennis team won its sixth consecutive match and got back into Sunshine State Conference play on Sunday, defeating Florida Southern 6-1 from the NSU Tennis Complex.

Sharks Complete Action at Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Men’s and Women’s Track teams competed at the Hurricane Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Sharks were led by a pair of top-10 finishers in Jan Schmied (7th/800m) and Ally Jakubiak (9th/1500m).

HOW IT HAPPENED (Women’s)

Ally Jakubiak (9th/4:52.65) earned a top-10 finish in the 1500 meters.

NSU added a pair of top-12 finishers in the 800 meters with McKinzie Winget (11th/2:37.79) and Grace Moriarty (12th/3:03.93).

HOW IT HAPPENED (Men’s)

Jan Schmied (7th) paced NSU in the 800 meters, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:58.05.

Michael May III (11th/2:02.42) and Evan Crisp (12th/2:02.93) also finished inside the top-12 in the 800 meters.

UPCOMING

The Sharks will compete again on Friday, March 31 in the Spikes Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

Sharks Earn Series Victory over Panthers

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla – Nova Southeastern Baseball took the victory in the finale of the three-game series against Davenport, winning 6-4 on Saturday afternoon from the NSU Baseball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Bottom of the Second – Derek Bermudez gave the Sharks a 1-0 lead with a two-out RBI single, driving in Kristian Noriega.

Top of the Third – Frank Ellisalt worked around a lead-off double, stranding the tying run at third base, and tallied 14 consecutive shutout innings at home.

Bottom of the Third – Duncan Pastore drove in Stephen Schissler, extending the Sharks lead to 2-0.

Top of the Fourth – The Panthers tied the game on a two-run double, putting the score at 2-2.

Top of the Fifth – Davenport added two more runs on another double, taking a 4-2 lead over NSU.

Bottom of the Fifth – Adam Frank cut into the Panthers lead with an RBI groundout, making the score 4-3.

Bottom of the Sixth – A throwing error by the Panthers pitcher allowed two runs to score for the Sharks, as NSU took a 5-4 lead over Davenport. Bermudez added his second RBI of the game, driving in Adam Smith on a sacrifice fly.

Top of the Ninth – Michael Dillon entered the game looking to record his second save of the season, and set down the Panthers in order, sealing the series win for NSU.

Sharks Offense Erupts, Scores 14, in Win over Panthers

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Powered by a seven-run sixth inning, the Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball got back into the win column with a 14-2 victory over Davenport in the second game of the three game series. Duncan Pastore led the Sharks, going 4-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Cooper Omans tossed his second quality start of the season and earned his first win.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Top of the Second – The Sharks battery mates, Cooper Omans and Kolbe Aven, ended the inning in style and recorded a strike ’em out throw ’em out double play.  

Bottom of the Third – NSU used some small ball to plate the game’s first run. Stephen Schissler led off the inning with a bunt single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Adam Frank moved Schissler to third base on a fly out to right field. Duncan Pastore drove in the run on a single to left field.  

Top of the Fourth – Davenport got on the scoreboard with an RBI single, tying the score at 1-1. 

Bottom of the Fourth – A Davenport miscue led to a pair of runs for NSU, as Marcus Franco came into score on a throwing error following an MC Sagaro bunt. Sagaro later scored on a wild pitch, giving NSU a 3-1 advantage.  

Bottom of the Sixth – Nova Southeastern’s offense erupted in the inning, as seven consecutive NSU batters reached base in a seven-run inning. Marcus Franco led off the inning with a walk and moved to third base following a single by Sagaro. Stephen Schissler drove a double to right field, driving in a run. Adam Frank followed with a two-run single, extending the lead to 6-1. Pastore added a double of his own, plating Frank, as the Panthers made their second pitching change of the inning. Irisarri added a bunt single before Kristian Noriega drove in Pastore with a single. Gregory Delgado just missed a home run, bouncing a double off the top of the center-field wall, and capped off the seven-run frame with NSU leading 10-1.  

Top of the Seventh – With the score seemingly out of reach, Anthony Karoly was called upon to relieve Omans, and the freshman struck out the three hitters he faced.  

Bottom of the Seventh – NSU plated two more runs, taking advantage of a wild Panthers relief pitcher, putting the score at 12-1.  

Top of the Ninth – Ronaldo Fernandez sealed the victory for the Sharks, striking out a pair in the ninth inning, as NSU finished off the 14-2 win.

The Sharks will conclude the three-game series against the Davenport Panthers on Saturday, March 18. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.

Sharks Kick Off Day One At Hurricane Invitational

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Men’s and Women’s Track teams kicked off running at the Hurricane Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Sharks were led by Kamila Soja, who finished in second place in the 3000m.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Women’s)

Kamila Soja earned a second-place finish in the 3000 meters, crossing the finish line with a time of 9:56.53, nearly 20 seconds ahead of third place.

Eden Toal (4th/10:22.48), Maya Espinosa (5th/10:23.93) and Ally Jakubiak (6th/10:24.46) rounded out the top-6 finishers for NSU in the 3000 meters..

HOW IT HAPPENED (Men’s)

The Sharks had a pair of top-5 finishers in the 3000 meters, with David Mahnke (3rd/8:50.76) and Joseph Salerno (4th/8:51.93) posting sub-nine-minute times.

Adrien Zambaux (7th/9:08.46), Thor Eriksson (9th/9:32.38) and Justin Haber (10th/9:42/71) earned top-10 finishes in the 3000 meters.

Sharks Win 8th Straight, Complete Doubleheader Sweep

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Softball team won their 8th straight game on Thursday evening, taking down Kutztown and Caldwell in a doubleheader sweep. A four-run fourth inning propelled NSU to an 8-1 victory in game one, the Sharks followed that up with a 2-0 win in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

TOP 1st | A sacrifice fly brought home the first run of the game for the Golden Bears, giving them the early lead. 

BOT 2nd | With two runners on base, a fielder’s choice allowed Madison Fine to come across home plate, tying the game at one. 

BOT 4th | The Sharks tacked on four runs, thanks to hits from Alyssa Drogemuller, Tia Williams, and Kerstyn Shaw

BOT 6th | Alexis Smith got the inning started with a base hit, shortly after, she stole second base. Drogemuller came to the plate in the ensuing at-bat and batted in Smith, giving NSU a 6-1 lead. A sacrifice fly from Fine and a single by Samantha Burke brought two more runners’ home for NSU. The Sharks would go on to secure the 8-1 victory over Kutztown.

Sharks Fall Against Panthers

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern Baseball saw its seven-game winning streak snapped on Friday evening, as the Sharks lost 3-1 against the Davenport Panthers from the NSU Baseball Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Top of the First – The Panthers got on the board first, having the first four batters reach base, and took a 2-0 lead in the first inning.  

Bottom of the First – Stephen Schissler showed his speed and led the game off with a triple before coming into score on an Adam Frank sacrifice fly.  

Top of the Second – Davenport plated another run, taking a 3-1 lead, with an RBI single.  

Both Carlos Rey and Carson Fischer matched each other over the next five innings, with both starting pitchers tossing seven innings and recording a quality start. The Sharks were unable to match the Panthers in the run column and ended the team’s seven-game winning streak.

Nova Southeastern continues its three-game series against Davenport with game two on Friday, March 17. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

Madison Frederick Earns Academic All-America Honors

AUSTIN, TX. – The College Sports Communicators (CSC) announced its 2022-23 Academic All-American women’s basketball teams for the NCAA Division I-II-III and NAIA. Madison Frederick, with a perfect 4.00 grade point average in graduate school, earned Academic All-American First-Team honors.  

Frederick, a graduate transfer originally from Tipp City, Ohio, joined the Sharks prior to the 2022-23 season and made an impact on the court and in the classroom. Madison was selected as an All-Sunshine State Conference First-Team honoree, starting all 30 games this year. Frederick led the Sharks in points-per-game (17.1), rebounds (7.9), assists (4.9) and recorded a triple-double on January 21 against Lynn (21/11/13).  

Frederick is pursuing her graduate degree in Leadership and holds a perfect 4.00 GPA.
