Town of Davie Red-Light Safety Cameras

Red light camerasWhy has the Town of Davie implemented an Intersection Safety Photo Enforcement Program?

According to the Institute for Highway Safety, nearly 2 million crashes occur annually in intersections.  Red-light running happens frequently and often it’s deadly.  In 2022, 1,149 people were killed in crashes involved in running a red-light.

Studies have found that red-light safety cameras are an effective way to change driving behavior by discouraging red-light running.  The Town of Davie does not have enough police officers to be at every intersection conducting traffic enforcement.  Red Light Cameras help to fill this void.

What is a red-light running violation?

A red-light running violation occurs when a vehicle enters an intersection after the traffic signal has turned red. Sensors embedded in the roadway determine the position of the vehicle at the time the traffic signal turns red and triggers a violation.  The still photos and video footage of the violation are reviewed before the Red Light Violation is mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle.

Cameras don’t violate privacy.

Driving is a regulated activity.  Streets are public places. Vehicle travel is constantly being recorded by different methods.

How does the red-light camera work?

The system activates when vehicle travel is detected just prior to the stop bar after the traffic signal has turned red.

  • The camera captures images of an alleged violation taken from the rear of the vehicle.
  • The first image shows the vehicle behind the white stop bar and the illuminated red light.
  • The second image shows the vehicle in the intersection with the red light illuminated.
  • The third image shows the license plate in a close-up from one of the images captured.
  • Data, including the date, time and duration of the yellow & red lights is recorded.

Why did I receive a Notice of Violation?

Based on images from the red-light cameras, your vehicle was determined to have committed a red-light violation. The Notice of Violation is mailed to the registered owner of vehicle.

How much is the fine?

Violations will be assessed a $158 statutory penalty.  No points will be assessed.  If the fine is not paid in a timely fashion, a State of Florida Uniform Traffic Citation will be issued and increased penalties of $264 as well as a license suspension could be assessed as well as additional court costs such as license reinstatement fees.
