NSU Sweeps Doubleheader Against Flagler

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Softball team earned a pair of wins on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Flagler. The Sharks were led by a dominant performance from Madison Fine, who picked up a season-high 5 RBIs in game one and 3 RBIs in game two.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

BOT 1st | Alyssa Drogemuller worked a walk and was advanced to third after a double from Kerstyn Shaw. Madison Fine drove in both runners on a base hit and was droved in after a triple from Samantha Burke. The Sharks left the first inning leading 3-0.

BOT 3rd | Tia Williams opened the inning with a bunt single and stole second base shortly after. Another hit from Shaw advanced Williams to third, and Fine drove in another RBI on a fielder’s choice to extend the Sharks’ advantage to 4-0.

BOT 4th | NSU loaded the bases after a double from Alexis Smith, a reached-on error from Drogmuller and a walk from Shaw. The Sharks jumped out to a 6-0 lead after Fine drove in a pair of runs on a single.

BOT 5th | After reaching on an error, Emily Thomas scored a run on a base hit from Drogemuller.

TOP 6th | Flagler scored its first run of the game on an extra-base hit through the right side.

BOT 6th | The bases were loaded once again after three consecutive walks to Fine, Hayley Lynch and Thomas. Back-to-back walks from Alexi Watkins and Drogemuller drove in two more runs and helped NSU secure a 9-1 win over Flagler in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

TOP 1st | The Saints took its first lead of the day on a sacrifice fly after a pair of hits.

BOT 3rd | The Sharks loaded the bases for Fine once again, with Smith, Williams and Shaw all finding their way on base. Adding onto her career day, Fine drove in all three runners on a double through the middle and put NSU up 3-1.

TOP 5th | After a few hits, Flagler picked up a pair of runs and tied the game at 3 runs each.

BOT 5th | Once again, NSU loaded the bases after a walk from Drogemuller, a single from Williams and a fielder’s choice from Fine. The Sharks picked up the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly from Burke and added an insurance run on an RBI from Lynch.

TOP 7th | Ellard retired the final three batters and helped Nova Southeastern secure a 5-3 win over Flagler.

Sunahara Recognized on Bevo Francis Top-25

Kansas City, MO – Small College Basketball and the National Awards Committee are pleased to announce the Bevo Francis Top 25 Watch List for the 2022-23 season. The Top 25 Watch List consists of some of the top players from the NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA. Sunshine State Conference and D2CCA Player of The Year, RJ Sunahara has led No. 1 Nova Southeastern back to the NCAA Elite Eight and to a 33-0 record on the 2022-23 season. 

John McCarthy has this to say about this year’s Top 25 Watch List: “Congratulations to the 25 players selected for the Bevo Francis Award Watch List,” stated McCarthy. “There are approximately 13,000-16,000 players that play college basketball at the small college levels, and to be among the 25 players on this list, is obviously a very high honor. Based on our selection criteria, each of these players has earned their spot on this list, and they have had – or are still having – a phenomenal season. I am very grateful for the time and insight from our committee.”

Sunahara and the Sharks have dominated during the 2022-23 campaign, with an average margin of victory of 27.3, which has increased during the NCAA Tournament. RJ has averaged 18.9 points, 5.3 rebounds, leads NSU in blocks (51), while shooting 60% from the field. The junior earned five weekly Sunshine State Conference Player/Defensive Player of the Week honors this season.
 
Sunahara recorded two double-doubles – his first coming on November 26, where he scored 27 points and grabbing 11 rebounds against Francis Marion and recorded 19 points and a season-best 14 rebounds on December 10 in a Sunshine State Conference matchup versus Palm Beach Atlantic. Sunahara scored over 30-points three times during the 2022-23 season, including a career-high 41 against Bluefield State on December 19.

The Clarence “Bevo” Francis Award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball. Considerations will be season statistics and individual achievements, awards, personal character and team achievements. This is an incredibly prestigious award, as this award will only be given to one player within Small College Basketball per season. 2023 marks the seventh year of the Bevo Francis Award.

Past winners include Dominez Burnett of Davenport University in 2016, Justin Pitts of Northwest Missouri State University in 2017, Emanuel Terry of Lincoln Memorial University in 2018, Aston Francis of Wheaton College in 2019, Kyle Mangas of Indiana Wesleyan University in 2020 and Trevor Hudgins of Northwest Missouri State University in 2022. The award was not presented during the 2021 season. On April 1st, the finalists of this year’s award will be announced, followed by the Bevo Francis Award winner being crowned on April 3rd

#1 SHARKS ARE ELITE! NSU Punches Ticket to Evansville in Dominant Fashion

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – For the third-time in program history, the No. 1 ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks Men’s Basketball team has punched their ticket to the NCAA Elite Eight, dominating Alabama-Huntsville 87-62 and winning the NCAA South Region Tournament. Will Yoakum led the Sharks with 33 points and tied the program record for three-pointers (9). 

During the No. 1 Sharks run through the South Region Tournament – the closest game was the final against UAH, where NSU won by 25. The top-ranked Sharks average margin of victory was 32.6 in the three games.

HOW IT HAPPENED  

First Half – The Sharks couldn’t have asked for a better start to the regional title game, as Jonathan Pierre scored the first five points of the game and NSU led 7-0 in the first 50 seconds of the game. Yoakum hit back-to-back three-pointers, but UAH hung around and led 16-15 over the Sharks. The Charegers lead was short-lived, as Yoakum sparked an 11-2 run, scoring every point, and gave NSU the lead for good at 26-18. Yoakum hit three more three-pointers, closing the first half with eight, and sent the Sharks into the halftime break leading 49-28.  

Second Half – Yoakum reached the 30-point plateau early in the second half, putting the Sharks ahead 57-33. Nova Southeastern continued to lead by over 20-points in the early minutes of the second-half. Dallas Graziani scored five consecutive points for NSU, as Nova Southeastern led 72-48.  The Sharks punched the program’s third ticket to the Elite Eight, defeating Alabama-Huntsville 87-62.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE 

The Sharks defense forced 16 turnovers in the victory and outscored the Chargers 20-4 off of turnovers.  

NSU was unrelenting on the glass and outscored UAH 23-2 with second chance points.  

The Sharks transition offense made an impact, outscoring the Chargers 21-7 on fast breaks.  

UPCOMING 

No. 1 Nova Southeastern has advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the second consecutive season. The Sharks will find out their opponent following a re-seeding before the tournament.

#2 Sharks Beat #7 Wayne State

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The second-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks Women’s Tennis team added another ranked win to their season ledger, defeating No. 7 Wayne State (5-2) on Tuesday, March 14, from the NSU Tennis Complex in Rolling Hills.

Karolina Snita and Julie Razafindranaly sealed the doubles point for NSU, defeating Dea Gorgidze and Malak Arafat [6-3] 

HOW IT HAPPENED – Singles 

Razafindranaly won a back-and-forth three-set match, defeating Ruyssen [6-2, 3-6, 6-0] 

Espinal won her match in straight sets, beating Komar [6-3, 6-1] 

Snita was victorious in her singles competition, defeating Arafar [6-3, 6-2] 

Bizhukova sealed the victory for the second-ranked Sharks, defeating Gorgidze [6-1, 6-1]

#1 Sharks Face Chargers in NCAA South Region Finals

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – One win away from punching the program’s third ticket to the NCAA Division II Elite Eight, the No. 1 Sharks Men’s Basketball team (32-0) faces a familiar foe in third-seeded Alabama-Huntsville for the South Region Championship on Tuesday evening from the Rick Case Arena.

The 2022-23 season tipped off between the then ranked No. 4 Sharks and #24 Chargers from the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic.  NSU handled Alabama-Huntsville, opening the season with a 101-81 victory.

HOW THEY GOT HERE

No. 1 Nova Southeastern has continued to roll through their schedule and taken their game to a new-level in tournament play. NSU earned the program’s second consecutive Sunshine State Conference regular season and tournament crowns, before being named as the top-seed in the NCAA Tournament.

The Sharks opened NCAA play against eighth-seeded Miles on Saturday, March 11. Sunshine State Conference and D2CCA Player of the Year, RJ Sunahara led NSU with 22 points, shooting 58% from the field, while recording four steals and five rebounds. Jonathan Pierre hit three, three-pointers, while Kobe Rodgers made his return to the lineup and added 13 points.

Will Yoakum and Dallas Graziani led Nova Southeastern to the Sweet 16, as the duo combined for 11 three-pointers. Graziani shot 70% from beyond the arc, while setting a career-high in three-pointers (7) and points (28). Yoakum scored 27 points and is shooting 50% from three-point territory in the NCAA Tournament.

Alabama-Huntsville, the third-seed in the South Region Tournament, defeated both sixth-seed Embry-Riddle and No. 17 West Alabama (two-seed) to advance to the South Region Championship game for the seventh-time in program history

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
In the season opening matchup, RJ Sunahara began his Player of the Year campaign by scoring 23 points and shooting 75% from the field. Dallas Graziani hit six three-pointers and recorded 20 points, while dishing 11 assists, as the Sharks defeated the Chargers.

Five Sharks are averaging double-digits in the NCAA Tournament. Yoakum leads NSU with 22.5 points-per-game and is shooting 54% from the field.

Graziani, following a 28-point outburst against West Georgia, is averaging 16 points and eight assists in the NCAA Tournament.
Chaney Johnson, the Gulf South Conference Player of the Year, has led the Chargers to the South Region title game. The forward is scoring 17 points-per-game and grabbing five rebounds.

CJ Williamson, who was not a part of the Chargers during the season opening matchup, is averaging 7.5 points for UAH during the tournament.

Hewitt, Trieschmann Earn CSCAA Yearly Honors

RICHMOND, VA. – The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) announced its NCAA Women’s Division II award winners and All-Americans for the 2022-23 season.

No. 1 Nova Southeastern Head Coach Ben Hewitt earns CSCAA Coach of the Year honors, while Emily Trieschmann – following winning six NCAA National Titles – was recognized as the CSCAA Swimmer of the Year.

The awards were determined by a nationwide vote of CSCAA-member Division II head swimming coaches and head diving coaches. All-Americans are selected based on their finish at the NCAA Championships. Only student-athletes who computed in their championship finals are eligible for All-American Honors. NCAA relays & individuals must score in the top-8 to earn first-team honors, while those who finish ninth through sixteenth earn second-team honors.

Hewitt guided the top-ranked Sharks to the program’s first ever NCAA National Championship – the ninth team title in NSU Athletics History – with Nova Southeastern winning 11 individual titles during the championship meet. The Sharks amassed 536.5 points en route to the title. Hewitt also guided the NSU Women’s Swim team to the program’s third consecutive Sunshine State Conference title.

Trieschmann was exceptional during the NCAA National Championship meet, winning titles in the 1000-freestyle, 200-freestyle, 500-freestyle, 1650-freestyle, and was a part of both the 200 and 800-freestyle relay teams. Trieschmann set the NCAA record in the 1000-freestyle with a time of 9:43.25.

For the Sharks, Emilia Ronningdal (800-freestyle relay; 200-IM; 400-medley relay), Ilaria Murzilli (800-freestyle relay), May Lowy (800-freestyle relay; 400-IM), Emily Trieschmann, Mollie Morfelt (200-medley relay; 400-medley relay), Sasha Maslova (200-medley relay;400-medley relay), and Savanna Best (200-breaststroke; 400-medley relay;200-medley relay) all won national titles during the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving Championships.

Sharks Women’s Swimming had a total of 12 NCAA All-Americans – Estelle Bauer, Savanna Best, Solana Capalbo, Claire Gass, May Lowy, Celina Marquez, Sasha Maslova, Mollie Morfelt, Ilaria Murzilli, Victoria Ortiz, Emilia Ronningdal and Emily Trieschmann.

NSU Men’s Swimming had seven All-American honorees – Steven Aimable, Luca Alessandrini Jarryd Baxter, Thomas Flower, Umberto Marsic, Mateus Ribeiro, and Olle Williamsson.

#3 NSU Finish Day One in Rain-Soaked Tournament

Orlando, Fla. – The third-ranked Nova Southeastern Women’s Golf team began play at the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational on Monday. NSU (+24) currently sits in seventh-place in the 13-team field. Monday’s action was cut short due to rain in the area, the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational will now just be a 36-hole event, rather than the scheduled 54.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After starting the day with a triple bogey, Ellen Andersson settled in and recorded a par on her next five holes before birding holes 12-14. Anderson ended the day at +3 and sits in a tie for seventh-place, three strokes off the lead.
  • Jimena Marques (+4) had a solid day on the course, recording four pars and a birdie on her first five holes. Marques is currently tied for 13th.
  • Haruka Mata (+8), Olivia Gronborg (+9), and Emma Larsen (+11) are all inside the top-50 after round one of competition.

The second and final round of the Peggy Kirk Bell Classic will tee off on Tuesday, March 14.

#6 Sharks Battle Elements in First Round of Southeastern Challenge

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Nova Southeastern Men’s Golf team teed off at the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate challenge on Monday. The sixth-ranked Sharks battled the elements, before the day was rained out, and through the first round of action, sit in a tie for fifth-place (+1).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Despite battling the elements, Joseba Torres had the best day for the Sharks and sits inside the top-10. Torres recorded three birdies in the first round, shooting an even-par. Before being rained out, Torres added two more birdies and was bogey free and was at -2, through nine holes.
  • Michael Hay (E) ended Monday’s action at an even-par and inside the top-20 of the standings. Hay birdied his first hole and ended the first round at +1. Hay will pick up tomorrow and has recorded four birdies so far in his second round.
  • Emanuel Olofsson (+2) birdied his first hole of the day and has only bogeyed three holes.
  • Will O’Neill, after having a tough time finding his groove in the first round, recorded three consecutive birdies before the rain ended the day.

#2 Sharks Sweep Hillsdale

T LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 2 Nova Southeastern Women’s Tennis team earned their fourth consecutive win on Monday, defeating Hillsdale College 7-0, from the NSU Tennis Complex at Rolling Hills. #2 NSU returned to the courts for the first time since March 2, and used the rest to their advantage, handling Hillsdale and winning each match in straight sets.

#1 NSU Beats West Georgia, Advances to Sweet 16

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – No. 1 Nova Southeastern Men’s Basketball advanced to the Sweet-16 of the NCAA Tournament with another dominant victory, defeating fifth-seed West Georgia 105-74 on Sunday evening from the Rick Case Arena. The top-ranked Sharks improve to 32-0 on the season, setting a new-program record for victories. Dallas Graziani led #1 NSU to the win, scoring 28 points, while shooting a remarkable 70% from the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half – Will Yoakum opened the game by scoring 7-of-9 points for NSU, leading the Sharks to an early 9-2 lead. West Georgia followed with a 9-1 run of their own, putting the score at 11-10 in favor of the Wolves. With the Sharks needing a bucket, Jonathan Pierre stepped up and knocked down a three-pointer for NSU and reclaimed the lead – this time for good – for Nova Southeastern, as NSU led 15-13 with 12:40 remaining in the first half. Graziani and Yoakum both caught fire from beyond the arc, with each Shark hitting a pair of threes and put NSU ahead 38-21. Nova Southeastern went into halftime leading 49-35 over the Wolves.

Second Half – Graziani hit a pair of three-pointers in the early moments of the second half, extending the Sharks advantage to 59-41. Heading into the game, West Georgia had held opponents under 70-points for five consecutive games, but their run ended with over 12-minutes remaining in the game as Graziani knocked down another three-pointer and put NSU ahead 71-49. With less than 10-minutes remaining in the game, Pierre threw down an emphatic dunk, off an assist from RJ Sunahara, pushing the lead to 81-55 for NSU. Nova Southeastern held a 20-point advantage over the Wolves for the majority of the game, giving West Georgia more than they could handle, and earning the 105-74 win to advance to the NCAA South Region Championship.

STATS OF THE NIGHT

  • Dallas Graziani played the best game of his Nova Southeastern career and continues to showcase his talents in the postseason. Graziani scored a career-high 28 points, knocking down seven three-pointers.
  • Will Yoakum put on a clinic for NSU, scoring 27 points, while shooting 50% from the field.
  • The Sharks, who entered the tournament leading NCAA Division II in scoring margin (26.8), have continued that trend in the postseason. NSU defeated Miles 97-55 (+42) before beating West Georgia 105-74 (+31)
