#6 NSU Starts NCAA National Championship Tournament

WARREN, Ohio – The Division II Men’s Golf National Championship tee’d off on Monday afternoon from the Avalon Lakes Golf Course. After one round, the sixth-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks are in 14th place (+10), with Josep Serra pacing the Sharks at +1.

How it Happened
Will O’Neill got off to a strong start. O’Neill was one-stroke under-par after the first four holes and added two more birdies on the front-nine. O’Neill concluded his round at +2.

Josep Serra (+1), totaled five birdies on the day, including birdieing 3-of-5 holes from 11-15 on the back-nine.

Joseba Torres bounced back after opening his round with a pair of bogeys by recording three birdies across four holes. Torres parred five consecutive holes from 8-12 and ended his first round at +3.

Michael Hay recorded an eagle on the fifth-hole, a 343-yard par-4, and finished the day at +4.

Daniel Celestino ended the opening round at +5.

Three Sharks Recognized on PING All-South Region Team

NORMAN, Okla. – The Golf Coaches’ Association of America announced the 2023 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Division II PING All-Region honorees on Friday morning. Michael Hay, Joseba Torres and Will O’Neill received the honors.  

The trio makes up part of the twelve men’s golf student-athletes that were recognized from the South region, seven of which are representatives of Sunshine State Conference programs.  

Hay, a senior, currently ranks 11th in the south region and had an average score of 71.36 across 11 tournaments during the 2022-23 season. Hay had five top-10 finishes on the campaign, including a third place finish at the State Conference Championships.  

Joseba Torres, the ninth-ranked golfer in the south region and 25th in NCAA Division II, held an average of 71.67 in 10 tournaments. Torres placed inside the top-12 in six consecutive tournaments, spanning from October 31, 2022, until April 4, 2023.  

O’Neill, a graduate transfer from Georgetown, was incredible during the 2022-23 campaign for the sixth0ranked Sharks, finishing inside the top-10 at six events and won the NSU Shark Invitational in November 2022. O’Neill has finished in third place at the Sunshine State Conference Championship and eighth at the NCAA D2 South/Southeast Regional.  

The Nova Southeastern Men’s Golf team will compete at the NCAA Division II National Championship from the Avalon Lakes Golf Club in Warren, Ohio. The tournament begins on Monday, May 22.

#6 Sharks Punch Ticket to NCAA National Championship

DAVIE, Fla. – The sixth-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks Men’s Golf team punched their ticket to the NCAA Division II National Championship with a third-place finish at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional tournament from the Grande Oaks Golf Club. The Sharks shot an even-par for the tournament and had the best team performance in the final round, shooting (-6).  

Nova Southeastern returns to the NCAA National Championship for the first-time since the 2015 season.

Team Winner – No. 3 West Florida (-6) 

Individual Winner – Andrew Riley, Palm Beach Atlantic (-9)

How it Happened

Will O’Neill had an incredible final round, shooting a 66 (-5) for the day and jumped 27 spots in the leaderboard for a top-10 finish. O’Neill shot a bogey-free round and recorded five birdies.  

Joseba Torres (+2) finished the tournament at (-1) and recorded a pair of birdies in the final round.  

Michael Hay began the day with positive momentum, shooting a bogey-free front-nine, while adding three birdies. Hay ended the day at (-3) and closed the tournament with a pair of birdies on the back-nine.  

Josep Serra (+7) ended his tournament with a 75 in the final round.  

Daniel Celestino moved up seven spots in the rankings with an even-par in the final round.

#6 Sharks In Striking Distance After NCAA South/Southeast Regional Second Round

DAVIE, Fla. – The sixth-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks Men’s Golf tee completed day two of the NCAA South/Southeast Regional on Friday evening from the Grande Oaks Golf Club. NSU (+6) is currently tied for eighth and just two strokes off the qualifying line for the NCAA National Championship.

How it Happened

Joseba Torres (-3) rocketed up the leaderboard, jumping 29 spots on Friday. Torres recorded five birdies, including three consecutive from holes 13 to 15, and is tied for ninth place after two rounds.  

Will O’Neill (+2) moved up 36 spots, finishing Friday’s round with an even-par. O’Neill tallied three birdies on the afternoon.  

Josep Serra (+3) shot three over for the second round and is inside the top-50 golfers heading into the final round.  

Michael Hay (+4) recorded four straight birdies from holes 12-15 and finished his round at (+3). 

Daniel Celestino (+16) shot a 79 on Friday.

The Sharks make their final push for the NCAA National Championship Tournament on Saturday afternoon. NSU tees off at 11 a.m., with the final round set to begin at 7:30 a.m.

#6 Sharks Tee Off NCAA South/Southeast Regional

How it Happened

Joseba Torres shot an even-par on the opening round, recording four birdies. 

Josep Serra had a strong performance on the course, also shooting par, and recording a pair of birdies.  

Michael Hay finished at (+1), notching a pair of birdies, and ending his afternoon with a birdie and three consecutive pars on the final four holes.  

Will O’Neill (+2) recorded par on 14 holes and added a birdie on 17.  

Daniel Celestino shot a (+8) for the first round.

#6 Sharks Set to Tee off NCAA South Region Tournament

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The NCAA South/Southeast Regional Tournament is set to tee off from the Grande Oaks Golf Club on Thursday morning. The sixth-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks host a loaded field, featuring some of the top-ranked competition in NCAA Division II.  

“Nova Southeastern is honored to host the NCAA South Region Tournament from the Grande Oaks Golf Club. The course is in terrific condition and will be a test for the loaded field,” said Nova Southeastern Men’s Golf Coach, Joey Marino. “Our program is ready to compete in the South Region Tournament and hopeful for a trip to the NCAA National Championship.”   

The NCAA South/Southeast Regional includes programs from the Sunshine State Conference, Gulf South Conference, Peach Belt Conference and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Joining the Sharks in the tournament are – No. 1 Anderson, No. 2 Barry, No. 3 West Florida, No. 4 Lee, No. 5 North Georgia, No. 8 Georgia Southwestern, No. 12 Clayton State, No. 14 Lincoln Memorial, No. 16 Tampa, No. 20 Carson-Newman, No. 21 Barton, No. 22 Limestone, No. 23 Lander, No. 25 Saint Leo, South Carolina-Aiken, Shorter, Lynn, Florida Southern and Spring Hill.

Four Sharks Earn All-SSC Honors

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference announced the 2023 All-SSC Men’s Golf teams on Tuesday afternoon. Four Nova Southeastern student-athletes were recognized, with two Sharks being named to the First- and Second-Teams. For full release, click here

Will O’Neill and Michael Hay led the way for the Sharks, as both were recognized as First-Team honorees. O’Neill had an excellent year for NSU, placing top-10 in five events, including a top-3 finish in the Sunshine State Conference Championship. O’Neill won the NSU Shark Invitational on October 4, his second event as a member of the program.  

Hay was exceptional during the 2022-23 campaign for the Sharks, finishing inside the top-10 in five events. Hay placed in a tie for second at the Griffin Invitational, third at the Matlock Collegiate Classic, 10th at the Hurricane Invitational, fourth at the battle at the shores, and tied for third at the Sunshine State Conference championship. Hay was also recognized as a First-Team All-SSC member in 2022.  

Joseba Torres and Josep Serra both received Second-Team accolades. Torres was consistent throughout the year for NSU, placing inside the top-20 in seven consecutive events. Serra, receives the second All-SSC honor of his career, after being named to the Second-Team and the Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year in 2022.  

The Sharks will host the NCAA South Regional Championship Tournament from the Grande Oaks Golf Club from Thursday, May 11 through Saturday, May 13. NSU tees off on Thursday at 11:50 a.m. Spectators are welcome to attend.

#6 Sharks Selected as NCAA South Region Tournament Host

INDIANAPOLIS, IN. – The NCAA has announced the field of 80 teams and 32 student-athletes – competing as individuals – that have been selected to participate in regional competition of the 2023 NCAA Division II Men’s Golf Championships. The Nova Southeastern Sharks Men’s Golf team has been selected as a host institution and will play from the Grande Oaks Golf Club beginning May 11-13.  

The NCAA South Region Tournament consists of a loaded field, joining the sixth-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks will be No. 2 Barry, No. 3 West Florida, No. 4 Lee, No. 16 Tampa, Saint Leo, Shorter, Lynn, Florida Southern and Spring Hill.  

“Nova Southeastern is honored to host the NCAA South Region Tournament from the Grande Oaks Golf Club. At a minimum, the top three teams and the top two student-athletes not with a team from each regional will advance to the finals, May 22-26 at Avalon Lakes in Warren, Ohio. The remaining eight team berths will be allocated based on the regions represented in the prior year’s head-to-head medal play portion of the championships, with the maximum number of teams from a given region capped at seven. The finals will be hosted by the Mountain East Conference and Avalon Lakes at The Grand Resort. 

The NCAA South Region Tournament will tee off from the Grand Oaks Golf Club on Thursday, May 11.

#6 Sharks Place Third at SSC Championships

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Men’s Golf team concluded play at the Sunshine State Conference Championships on Tuesday afternoon. Another strong showing secured a third-place finish for NSU (-10) in the three-round tournament. Individually, the Sharks were led by a pair of T-3rd place finishers in Will O’Neill and Mike Hay (-8).

How it Happened
Will O’Neill (-8) dominated the final round, recording par or better on 17 of 18 holes along with five birdies. At the end of the tournament, the graduate transfer finished in T-3rd place with a score of -8.

Mike Hay (T-3rd) struggled in the front nine (+1) but fought back with four birdies on the back nine of the final round. After three rounds, the senior shot -8, good for T-3rd place in the tournament.

Joseba Torres (+1) recorded par or better on the first six holes of the final round, but six bogeys put Torres at +3 on the day. After the third round, the junior finished tied for 18th place with a score of +1.

Josep Serra (35th) shot +5 on the front nine but a dominant -4 performance on the back nine helped Serra shoot +1 in the final round. At the end of the SSC tournament, the sophomore shot +5 and finished in 35th place.

Daniel Celestino (+13) shot +8 in round three after recording a pair of double bogeys and six bogeys. At the conclusion of three rounds, Celestino earned a T-44th place finish with a score of +13.

The Sharks will return to the course on Wednesday, May 10 in the NCAA South Region Championship at the Grande Oaks Golf Club.

#6 Sharks in Third at SSC Championships

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The sixth-ranked Nova Southeastern Men’s Golf team played their second round at the Sunshine State Conference tournament on Monday afternoon. A strong showing from Nova Southeastern in the second round (-12) puts NSU in third-place. Michael Hay continues to lead the Sharks and sits in a tie for second place at (-6).

How it Happened
Mike Hay (-6) dominated round two, shooting -4 on the front nine and par on the back nine. After shooting -4 in the second round, the senior sits tied for second place in the SSC Tournament.

Will O’Neill (T-7th) was consistent in the second round, recording an eagle and three birdies but also a pair of bogeys. At the conclusion of the day, O’Neill finished with a score of -4, tied for 7th place.

Joseba Torres (-2) had a perfect second round, shooting par or better in all 18 holes. After the dominant round two, the junior is tied for 11th place with a score of -2 in the tournament.

Josep Serra (T-29th) started strong on the front nine, picking up a pair of birdies in the first five holes. Two bogeys and a double bogey in the second round set the sophomore back, but Serra finished the day with a score of +4, tied for 29th place.

Daniel Celestino (+5) shot par or better on 15 of the 18 holes in the second round. After two rounds, the senior is tied for 35th place with a score of +5.

What's Next

The Sharks will return to the course on Tuesday, April 25, competing in the final round of the Sunshine State Conference tournament.
