Sharks Basketball Set to Host SSC Tournaments

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – For the first time in school history, both the Nova Southeastern Sharks Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs enter the Sunshine State Conference Championship tournaments as the top-seeds. The Sharks will host the SSC Championship tournaments beginning on Tuesday, March 5th, at the Rick Case Arena.

The men’s team, under the direction of Head Coach Jim Crutchfield, enter the tournament as the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II and have won the Sunshine State Conference regular season title for the third consecutive season. The Sharks (24-2, 18-2 SSC) finished the regular season on a 12-game winning streak and completed the program’s third consecutive undefeated season at home. Offensive dominance has been a staple of the Crutchfield-era, NSU begins postseason play leading the nation in scoring margin (+24), is ranked second in the NCAA in points-per-game (102.7) and is second in fastbreak points (515). Shane Hunter has paced the Sharks on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor, leading NSU in points-per-game (16.3), rebounds-per-game (6.8) and blocks (49).

“I’m proud of our players. They have come together and played as a team in a short time. The Sunshine State Conference is one of the toughest in the country,” said Crutchfield. “Our guys have certainly been consistent in their effort. To go 18-2 in the league and finish with 12 consecutive wins says a lot about their resilience. “Shark Basketball” is building a nice tradition.”

On the women’s side, Nova Southeastern won the program’s fifth Sunshine State Conference regular season crown and its fourth under Head Coach LeAnn Freeland-Curry. The Sharks (23-4, 18-2 SSC) are currently the 11th ranked team in NCAA Division II and are 21-1 since December 2nd, 2023. NSU ranks first in the Sunshine State Conference in points-per-game (71.6), ranks second in points allowed (59.3), and third in field goal percentage (44.5%). After making her debut in the second half of the season, Morgan Kane leads NSU in points-per-game (15.7), field goal percentage (57.4%), and rebounds-per-game (8.7). Nicole Scales has been a consistent presence for the Sharks throughout the 2023-24 season, leading the Sharks in points-per-game (13.7), three-pointers (48), and assists (91).

“Our players did a great job throughout the season of maintaining their focus and energy,” said Freeland-Curry. I thought they played for each other all season, and this is the outcome of that type of commitment. I’m very proud of the group and I feel like our best basketball is still to come.”

The quarterfinal round of the Sunshine State Conference tournament will be held at the Rick Case Arena on Tuesday, March 5th, with the top-seeded (11th ranked) Nova Southeastern Women’s Basketball team hosting eighth-seeded Florida Southern at 5:30 p.m. Following the completion of the women’s game, the top-ranked and top-seeded Nova Southeastern Men’s Basketball team will play Eckerd (eight-seed) at 7:30 p.m.
