NSU Splits Doubleheader With Findlay

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Softball team split a doubleheader with the University of Findlay on Wednesday evening, picking up their thirteenth win of the season. NSU dropped game one 9-3 against the Oilers but the Sharks bounced back in game two. Ryleigh Langwell and Tia Williams both batted in runs in the bottom of the 8th inning, propelling NSU to a 7-6 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

TOP 1st | The Oilers were able to put the first run on the board, scoring four runs in the top of the 1st inning. 

BOT 1st | Alexis Smith was walked in her first at-bat, shortly after, Tia Williams singled, bringing Smith across home plate for the first Shark run of the game. 

BOT 2nd | Madison Fine started the inning off with a single to get on base then Samantha Burke was walked in the next at-bat. With two runners on base, Smith tripled and brought in both runners for NSU, cutting the Shark deficit to one. 

TOP 4th | With two runners on base, a double by the Oilers tacked on two more runs, bringing their lead to 6-3. 

TOP 5th | Findlay batted in three more runs, giving them a six-run lead. 

BOT 7th | The Sharks continued to fight valiantly but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback, NSU dropped this matchup against Findlay 9-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

BOT 1st | NSU got out to a hot start, scoring three early runs thanks to RBIs from Langwell, Shaw, and Fine. 

TOP 3rd | The Oilers were able to score their first run of the game off a double.  

TOP 6th | Findlay put another run on the board, cutting the NSU lead to one run. 

TOP 7th | Despite being down most of the game, the Oilers tacked on three runs to take a 5-3 lead.  

BOT 7th | The Sharks weren’t done yet, Madison Fine batted in her second run of the game, shortly after, Kerstyn Shaw was able to come across home plate, thanks to an error by the Oilers, tying the game at five.  

TOP 8th | The Oilers singled and brought home a run to reclaim the lead. 

BOT 8th | Ryleigh Langwell and Tia Williams were the difference makers in the bottom of the 8th, batting in runs in consecutive at-bats to give NSU a 7-6 victory.

#1 Sharks Host Panthers in SSC Semifinals

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference Tournament continues on from the Rick Case Arena, as the top-ranked – and undefeated – Nova Southeastern Sharks Men’s Basketball team (28-0, 20-0 SSC) hosts the fourth-seeded Florida Tech Panthers (19-10, 11-9 SSC) in the SSC Semifinals on Thursday evening.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP
No. 1 Nova Southeastern was victorious in both matchups against the Panthers during the 2022-23 season, defeating Florida Tech 105-75 from the Rick Case Arena on 12/29 and completed the season sweep with a 79-57 win on February 8, where the Sharks clinched their second consecutive Sunshine State Conference regular season title.

NSU and Florida Tech matched up in last year’s Sunshine State Conference tournament quarterfinals, the Sharks defeated the Panthers 89-77.

The Panthers are the only team to hold the Sharks under 80 points in a game this season.

WHAT TO WATCH

  • The No. 1 Sharks handled Barry in the quarterfinal round of the Sunshine State Conference tournament. Each player on the Nova Southeastern roster scored, as NSU defeated Barry 106-71.
  • Nova Southeastern features three headliners from the Sunshine State Conference awards, RJ Sunahara (Player of the Year), Will Yoakum (Newcomer of the Year) and Jim Crutchfield (Coach of the Year).
  • The duo of Sunahara (19.5 points-per-game) and Yoakum (18.4 ppg) are the catalysts for the Sharks, with both ranking inside the top-10 in the league in points-per-game. The pair ranks second and third, respectively, in the SSC in field goal percentage.
  • Florida Tech had a pair of players named to the All-SSC Second-Team – Sesan Russell and Sean Houpt. The pair combined to score 36 points for the Panthers in the Sunshine State Conference quarterfinal win over Palm Beach Atlantic.

#1 Sharks Headline SSC Men’s Basketball Awards

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference released its 2022-23 All-SSC Men’s Basketball teams on Wednesday afternoon. The top-ranked Sharks, the two-time defending Sunshine State Conference regular season Champions, earned six All-SSC awards, including Player, Newcomer, and Coach of the Year.

RJ Sunahara, the recipient of six Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week awards during the season, earned SSC Player of the Year recognition following a dominant 2022-23 campaign. Sunahara was superb all season leading NSU to the program’s second consecutive undefeated regular season. The junior forward averaged 19.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.6 blocks, 1.6 steals, and 24.6 minutes-per-game, while also leading the league in field goal percentage (62%). Sunahara becomes the second NSU Men’s Basketball Player to be honored as the Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year, joining Sekou Sylla (2021-22). With the SSC Player of the Year honor, Sunahara adds the award to his 2021-22 Defensive Player of the Year and 2019-20 Freshman of the Year accolades.

Will Yoakum earns his Sunshine State Conference Newcomer of the Year honors, following a season in which the senior guard averaged 18.4 points-per-game. Yoakum is the fourth Shark to earn SSC Newcomer of the Year and second consecutive – David Dennis (2017-18), Mark Matthews (2018-19) and Sekou Sylla (2021-22). The senior was also named to the All-SSC Newcomer team.

In addition to their specialty awards, Sunahara and Yoakum both earned Sunshine State Conference First-Team honors.

Jim Crutchfield earned his third Sunshine State Conference Coach of the Year honor guiding No. 1 Nova Southeastern to a 27-0, 20-0 SSC regular season record. Crutchfield and the Sharks earned the program’s third SSC title, averaging 104.4 points-per-game and recording a turnover margin of +27.3, both leading NCAA Division II. The 2022-23 Sharks are the second undefeated team in conference play since the 1981-1982 expansion, matching the accomplishment of Crutchfield’s 2021-22 NSU team.

All-conference selections and individual award winners are determined by a vote of Sunshine State Conference head coaches with oversight and approval from member institution Athletic Directors.

Frederick and Conley Selected to All-SSC Teams

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference released its 2022-23 All-SSC Women’s Basketball selections on Wednesday afternoon. Madison Frederick and Hailey Conley were recognized by the SSC, with Frederick earning All Sunshine State Conference First-Team and Newcomer team honors, while Conley was selected to the All-SSC Second Team. 

Frederick, a graduate transfer from Iowa State, was the leading scorer for NSU in her first season as a Shark, averaging 17.8 points per game, while shooting 41.7% from three. The Ohio native ranks third in the SSC in points per game, second in three-point percentage, and second in assists per game (5.1). Frederick tabbed two SSC Player of the Week honors this season, November 28 and January 23. The graduate transfer had 14 outings where she scored 20 or more points, including a season-high 31 points against Eckerd on December 3rd. Frederick also had a triple-double against Lynn on Jan. 21st, which made her the first Shark to record a triple-double since Christen Prasse did it on February 27, 2019, against Palm Beach Atlantic.   

Conley, the Connecticut native, made a significant impact on the court for NSU in her fifth season as a Shark, finishing second on the team in scoring (14.3). The Graduate Student ranks 8th in the SSC in points per game and second in the league with 61 made three-pointers this season. Conley had four 20-point outings this season, including a season-high 27 points against Lynn on January 21. The North Franklin product also had 10 games with three or more made three-pointers, including three matches with 5 or more. Defensively, Conley finished with 21 steals, where she had seven games with two or more steals.  

The Nova Southeastern Sharks finished the 2022-23 regular season with a 21-7 record, 13-6 in the Sunshine State Conference and advanced to the quarterfinals of the SSC Championship Tournament.

#1 Sharks Start Tournament Run with Win over Barry

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – No. 1 Nova Southeastern began their postseason run on Tuesday evening, improving to 28-0 with a dominant 106-71 victory over eighth-seeded Barry from the Rick Case Arena. All 11 players for the top-ranked Sharks recorded points, including Jonathan Pierre leading the way with a game-high of 21, while shooting 50% from the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half – Two minutes into the SSC Quarterfinal matchup, RJ Sunahara converted an and-one for the Sharks, giving NSU an early 5-4 lead. Will Yoakum knocked down a three-pointer, and started a 13-3 run for Nova Southeastern, extending the Sharks lead to 18-7. Lukas Speidel recorded five consecutive points for the Sharks, before Pierre knocked down a three-point bucket to give NSU a 26-12 lead midway through the first half. With less than four minutes remaining in the opening half, the Sharks lead surpassed 20-points (44-23). NSU went into the halftime break leading 50-33.

Second Half – Yoakum started the second half in emphatic fashion, slamming down a dunk off an assist from Sunahara. A few moments later, Yoakum returned the favor, dishing an assist to Sunahara for a dunk of his own and pushed the Sharks lead to 58-33. Four minutes into the first half, Yoakum capped off a 16-0 run to open the second half for Nova Southeastern, as the Sharks doubled up Barry’s score. Alex Mangold knocked down a three-pointer, pushing NSU’s advantage over 40-points (91-50). The Sharks closed out the Sunshine State Conference Quarterfinal victory over the Buccaneers, 106-71.

STATS OF THE NIGHT
No. 1 Nova Southeastern has now won 39 consecutive home games, dating back to Feb. 26, 2020, when the Sharks also defeated Barry.
NSU’s defense continues to cause the opposition fits, as the Sharks outscored the Buccaneers 29-4 off of turnovers.
Nova Southeastern received contributions from every active player on the roster. The Sharks bench outscored Barry’s 46-17.

#8 Sharks Finish Second at Hurricane Invitational

ALBANY, Ga. – The eighth-ranked Nova Southeastern Men’s Golf team finished play at the Hurricane Invitational on Tuesday, placing second in the 17 team field. The Sharks (-9) placed five strokes ahead of top-ranked Anderson (SC).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Josep Serra (-4) was the top finisher for the Sharks and shot his best round of the tournament on Tuesday. Serra recorded four birdies on the front-nine and finished his day at (-2)
  • Joseba Torres (-3) finished the tournament in a tie for sixth place, after moving up nine-spots in the leaderboard by shooting a 70 on Tuesday. Torres recorded a par on each of the first three holes, before adding a birdie on five. Torres added three more birdies on the back-nine.
  • Michael Hay was the third Shark to finish inside the top-10 and finished the tournament by shooting -2 overall.
  • Will O’Neill had his best round of the tournament on Tuesday, shooting 69 for the day. O’Neill recorded four birdies in the final round.
  • Emanuel Oloffson finished the tournament at +12.

Sharks Drop Heartbreaker In SSC Quarterfinals

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Women’s Basketball team fell in the Sunshine State Conference Quarterfinals on Tuesday evening, losing to Florida Southern 67-69. The Sharks were led by 15 points from Kyannah Grant and 12 points from Madison Frederick in the tournament loss.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter – Madison Frederick started the scoring for the Sharks with a deep mid-range. Florida Southern jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but three consecutive layups from Kyarrah Grant, Hailey Conley and Skyla Osceola tied the game with under five minutes remaining. A pair of free throws from India Shepherd and back-to-back three-pointers from Mackenzie Steele and Suzan Kinran gave the Sharks a 16-13 advantage. The Mocs answered with a three of its own, but consecutive deep three-balls from Steele and Kyannah Grant extended the lead to 22-15 with just over a minute remaining. Out of a timeout, Kinran hit another three to put NSU up 25-17 at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter – Nova Southeastern struck first after Shepherd was fouled while hitting a layup. The Mocs went on a 6-0 run that was ended by a contested layup from Conley. Osceola added to the three-point barrage, hitting a shot from deep over a Florida Southern defender. Kyannah Grant made a layup to put NSU up 34-28 with just over five minutes left in the half. The Mocs caught fire, going on an 13-2 run to end the quarter. The Sharks would go into halftime trailing 36-41.

Third Quarter – The Sharks got on the board first after a corner three-ball from Kyannah Grant and a pair of free throws from Frederick. Nova Southeastern lowered its deficit to 45-47 after back-to-back baskets from freshman Delaney Wolfe with just over four minutes remaining. A pair of free throws from Kyarrah Grant and a tough layup from Frederick helped tie the game 49-49 with just over a minute left in the third. The Mocs ended the quarter on a 6-0 run, and the Sharks would go into the fourth quarter trailing 49-55.

Fourth Quarter – Kyannah Grant hit a three to start the quarter, but the Mocs would take a 52-61 lead with nine minutes remaining in the quarter. The Sharks went on a 9-0 run to tie the game after six straight points from Frederick and a three-pointer from Kyannah Grant with just over six minutes left in the game. Florida Southern regained the lead, but an offensive rebound and score from Conley tied it up. The Sharks gained the advantage after a pair of free throws from Kyannah Grant with three and a half minutes remaining. Kyannah Grant continued her domination, scoring a layup while being fouled to put NSU up 67-63. The Mocs would take the lead on a 6-0 run with 11 seconds left, and the Sharks were unable to convert two last second shots. NSU would fall 67-69 in a heartbreaker to Florida Southern.

NSU to Face Florida Southern In SSC Quarterfinals

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Women’s Basketball team kicks off SSC tournament play tonight at the Rick Case Arena. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. with NSU facing off against Florida Southern. The Sharks (21-7, 13-7 SSC) enter the SSC Championship Tournament as the fourth seed, while the Moccasins (14-13, 10-10 SSC) finished the regular season in fifth place. 

The Sharks will make their 11th straight trip to the SSC tournament under the direction of Head Coach LeAnn Freeland-Curry. NSU has won the league three times, with their most recent victory coming in 2015.  

Heading into the matchup, both teams split the season series. On January 1st, NSU secured the 78-67 victory over Florida Southern at the Rick Case Arena. Later that month, FSC defended their home court and pulled out the 66-58 win over Nova.  

NSU is led by the offensive tandem of Madison Frederick and Hailey Conley. Frederick ranks third in the SSC in points per game (17.8), second in the conference in three-point percentage (41.7%) and she is also second in the league in assists per game (5.1). Conley has been putting up impressive numbers as well, ranking eighth in the conference in points per game (14.3.), and second in the league with 61 made three-pointers this season. 

The tournament seeds are as follows, the University of Tampa earns the No. 1 seed, Eckerd College (No. 2), Lynn University (No. 3), Nova Southeastern University (No. 4), Florida Southern College (No. 5), Barry University (No. 6), Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (No. 7), and Saint Leo University (No. 8) round out this year’s tournament field. 

Following Tuesday’s quarterfinal round, the Sunshine State Conference Tournament semifinal round will be played on Thursday, March 2, with the final being played on Sunday, March 5. Each round of the SSC Tournament will be played at the host site of the higher-seeded institution. The SSC champion will receive an automatic bid to the 2023 NCAA Division II Championships.
