NSU Takes Down King in Thriller

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Softball team won its nineteenth game Sunday morning, defeating King University 7-6 in extra innings. The Sharks were led by a 3-hit, 3-RBI performance from Hayley Lynch in the final game of the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED

TOP 4th | King jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a single through center field.

BOT 4th | Madison Fine worked a walk and was advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Samantha Burke. With two outs, Hayley Lynch tripled and drove in the tying run.

BOT 5th | The Sharks put a runner in scoring position with one out after a walk from Alyssa Drogemuller, shortly after, NSU took a 2-1 lead after a double from Tia Williams.

TOP 7th | King loaded the bases and claimed a 5-2 lead after a bases-clearing double.

BOT 7th | The Sharks capitalized on a pair of errors from the Tornado and drove in a run as a result. Then, with the bases loaded, Lynch continued her hot-streak and knocked in a pair of runs on a double through the left side to tie the game.

BOT 9th | With both teams failing to break the tie, the game went into extra innings.

TOP 10th | With two outs, King drove in the placed runner to take a 6-5 lead over NSU.

BOT 10th | Lynch led off the inning and sacrificed to move the runner to third. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Nova Southeastern, and a HBP from Drogemuller drove in the tying run with just one out. With the game on the line, Williams drove in the game-winning run and secured a 7-6 win for the Sharks.

#1 Sharks Take on Wolves in NCAA Tournament Second Round

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The second round of the NCAA Tournament will tip-off from the Rick Case Arena on Saturday evening. The top-seeded and No. 1 ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks Men’s Basketball (31-0) team made a statement in their opening round game, defeating eighth-seed Miles 97-55 on Saturday night. #1 NSU will take on the fifth-seeded West Georgia Wolves (21-9) with a trip to the NCAA South Region Championship and Sweet-16 on the line.

HOW THEY GOT HERE
No. 1 Nova Southeastern (+42) had the largest margin of victory in the first round of the NCAA tournament, in a dominant victory over the SIAC Champion Golden Bears. RJ Sunahara, the Sunshine State Conference and South Region Player of the Year, led the Sharks with 22-points in just 25 minutes of action. Will Yoakum (18), Jonathan Pierre (15), Kobe Rodgers (13) and Jake Maranville (10) all scored in double figures alongside Sunahara.

Fifth-seeded West Georgia won their first round matchup against Gulf South Conference rival Lee, defeating the Flames for the first time during the 2022-23 season. Four Wolves scored in double digits in their victory, including Camron Donatlan who led UWG in points (20).

No. 1 Nova Southeastern leads NCAA Division II in points-per-game (103.8) and is one of two program’s in the country to average over 100-points – West Liberty (101.2)

During the Sharks postseason run, Dallas Graziani has averaged nine assists-per-game. The sophomore is third in the nation in assists (196) and ranks fifth in NCAA DII in assists-per-game (6.5).

West Georgia has held opponents under 70-points in each of their last five games.

Sharks Walk-off for Seventh Consecutive Win

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball team ran their winning streak to seven games on Saturday afternoon and completed a series sweep over the Huskies of St. Cloud State. NSU won the series finale in ten innings, 6-5, adding their second walk-off win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

Bottom of the Third – The Sharks plated three runs in the frame, taking the first lead of the game. Duncan Pastore started the scoring with a sacrifice fly, driving in MC Sagaro. Later in the inning, Adam Smith drove in both Kristian Noriega and Stephen Schissler and extended the NSU lead to 3-0.  

Bottom of the Fourth – Pastore added his second RBI of the contest, bringing in Schissler on an RBI double.  

Top of the Sixth – The Huskies put the score at 4-1 with an RBI single. 

Bottom of the Seventh – Daniel Irisarri drove in Noriega on a sacrifice fly, pushing the NSU lead to 5-1.  

Top of the Ninth – St. Cloud rallied for four runs in the last inning, tying the score at 5-5.  

Bottom of the Tenth – Nova Southeastern recorded their second walk-off victory of the winning streak, completing the series sweep on a walk-off single by Ryan Cainzos.

NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! #1 Sharks Take Home NCAA Swim Crown

INDIANAPOLIS, IN. – For the first time in program history, the No. 1 ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks Women’s Swimming team will take home the NCAA Division II National Championship. The Sharks, led by Head Coach Ben Hewitt, went wire-to-wire during their title run and led from the championship meet’s first event on Tuesday, March 7. No. 1 Nova Southeastern ended the NCAA National Championship meet with 536.5 points and Emily Trieschmann’s dominant performance led NSU to the title, as the sophomore will bring back five national titles – 800-free relay, 1000-free, 200-medley relay, 500-free, and 1650-free – to campus.  

Overall, the No. 1 Nova Southeastern Sharks women’s swimming team earned 11 NCAA individual national championships en route to the program’s first team title.  

Head Coach Ben Hewitt – It’s an honor to be the Head Coach of this program.  I am extremely proud of this team.  These ladies performed at a level not previously seen in a Championship meet of this caliber.  They performed at their best, against the best, and there isn’t much more a Coach can ask for from a team.  I want to give a special thanks to our administration and support staff.  Further, I want to thank Sierra Rhodes, who is instrumental in our success.  Alec Dawson and Valentina Artemeva were fantastic additions to our coaching staff and Jessie Bollback for her work with our athletes health and wellness.  Simply put this was one for the books.  It will live forever in program lore and we will all look fondly on it for the years to come.

#1 Sharks Make Statement in NCAA Tournament Opener

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The No. 1 Nova Southeastern Men’s Basketball team, the top-seed in the NCAA National Tournament, advanced to the second-round of the NCAA South Region Tournament on Saturday evening, defeating eighth-seeded Miles 97-55. The Sharks were led by 22 points from Sunshine State Conference and D2CCA South Region Player of the Year, RJ Sunahara (58% FG) and 18 points from SSC Newcomer of the Year Will Yoakum (64/50/75) in the NCAA Tournament victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half – The opening minutes of the NCAA South Regional were prolific, with Miles hitting a pair of three-pointers and RJ Sunahara scoring four consecutive points for NSU. The Sharks had back-to-back highlight plays that made the crowd erupt, with Will Yoakum denying a Golden Bear at the rim that was followed by a poster dunk from Sunahara. After a flashy pass from Dallas Graziani, Yoakum drained a three-pointer that put NSU up 16-8 with just over 14 minutes remaining. After missing the last six games with a knee injury, Kobe Rodgers instantly made an impact in his return, scoring on consecutive possessions. NSU extended its early lead to 32-24 over the Golden Bears, as Yoakum recorded 6-of-9 points. As the clock winded down, Pierre hit a pair of three-pointers from the top of the key that brought the crowd to its feet, before the Sharks went into the halftime break with a 53-31 lead.
 
Second Half – The Sharks carried the momentum into the second half, going on an 11-2 run that was led by six points from Yoakum. Layups from Graziani, Jake Maranville and Rodgers extended NSU’s lead to 66-3. Pierre made another highlight play after stealing an inbound pass and hitting a contested three-pointer on the left wing. A three-pointer from Tomas Murphy, a hook-shot from Alex Mangold, a catch-and-shoot three-ball from Maranville and a contested layup from Tommy Sala put an exclamation point on a 97-55 for Nova Southeastern over Miles.
 
STATS OF THE NIGHT

  • Five Sharks reached double-figures in the victory: Sunahara (22), Yoakum (18), Pierre (15), Rodgers (13) and Maranville (10).
  • Sunahara scored 18 points in the first half alone, an increase from his 15 PPG over the last five games.
  • Graziani is averaging nine assists during the postseason for NSU.
  • Yoakum has scored at least 18 points in the last nine games.

Sharks Shutout King in Doubleheader Sweep

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Softball team shut out King University in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday afternoon. The Sharks kicked off the day with a 6-0 victory in game one, propelled by a three-run fifth inning. NSU followed that up with another shutout win led by an impressive pitching performance from Julia Allen.

BOT 5th | With three runners on base, Madison Fine stepped up to the plate and did not dissapoint. Fine batted in three runs, giving NSU a 4-0 lead. 

BOT 6th | The Sharks weren’t done yet, tacking on two more runs, thanks to RBIs from Alexi Watkins and Drogemuller. NSU would hold on to the lead and secure the 6-0 victory over King.

NSU Extends Winning Streak to Six Games

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern Baseball continued its hot-stretch, winning their sixth consecutive game, and defeated St. Cloud State 8-4 on Friday evening from the NSU Baseball Complex. Stephen Schissler and Marcus Franco powered the Sharks past the Huskies, as each hit a home run and drove in multiple runs.

Cooper Omans retired the first ten St. Cloud hitters he faced, striking out six.

Bottom of the Third – Stephen Schissler opened the inning with a lead-off walk and quickly put himself into scoring position by swiping second base. Duncan Pastore drove in Schissler with an RBI single to left, putting NSU ahead 1-0.

#1 Sharks Head Into Final Day of NCAA Championships with lead

INDIANAPOLIS, IN. – Day four at the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving National Championships was completed on Friday evening from the IUPUI Natatorium. The No. 1 Nova Southeastern Sharks Women’s Swim team continues to hold a substantial advantage, NSU sits in first place with 434.5 points. Emily Trieschman won her fourth NCAA National title at the event, taking home the 500-free crown. Savanna Best was victorious in the 100-breaststroke, winning her first individual national championship.

Trieschmann continues her run of dominance and won the 500-free by nearly five-seconds. The sophomore has won titles in the 800-free relay, 1000-free, 200-medley relay, and now the 500-free.  

Luca Alessandrini placed sixth in the 500-free, posting a time of 4:23.37.  

Mollie Morfelt finished in second-place in the 100-back, just four-tenths of a second off the national title, recording a time of 54.24. 

Best clinched the 100-breaststroke national championship in 1:01.13, while teammate Claire Gass earned a bronze with a time of 1:02.01

May Lowy was the third-place finisher in the 200-fly, reaching the podium with a time of 1:59.83.

Sharks Take Down #4 UT Tyler in Game Two of Doubleheader

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Softball team split a doubleheader with #4 ranked UT Tyler on Friday evening. The Sharks dropped game one 8-2 but bounced back in game two, securing the 3-1 victory, thanks to a two-run second inning.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

TOP 2nd | The Patriots tripled to right field, bringing in the first run of the game. 

TOP 3rd | UT Tyler continued to extend their lead, pouring in four runs on back-to-back at bats. 

TOP 5th | A single by the Patriots brought another run home, extending their lead to six runs. 

TOP 8th | UT Tyler tacked on two more runs, giving themselves an 8-0 lead. 

BOT 6th | Alexis Smith singled in the first at-bat of the inning, to give NSU a runner on base. Alyssa Drogemuller followed suit, earning a single of her own to put runners on first and second for the Sharks. Shortly after, Kerstyn Shaw batted in Alexis Smith to give the Sharks their first run of the game. In the ensuing at bat, Madison Fine’s sacrifice fly added another run on the board. The Sharks continued to fight but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback, dropping game one 2-8.

BOT 1st | NSU put the first run on the board, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Madison Fine

Top 2nd | Texas-Tyler answered back with a run of their own, tying the game at one a piece. 

BOT 2nd | Alyssa Drogemuller singled to center field, bringing Smith across home plate. In the next at bat, Tia Williams doubled and brought home another run for NSU, giving them a 3-1 lead. The Sharks would go on to secure the victory and take down #4 UT Tyler 3-1.

Sharks Fall in NCAA South Regional

TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 7 seeded Nova Southeastern Women’s Basketball team was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon, falling to No. 2 seeded Eckerd 73-79. The Sharks were led by a season-high 20 points from Kyannah Grant and 11 points from Hailey Conley in the loss. NSU ends the 2022-23 season with 21 wins

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter – Eckerd jumped out to a 5-0 lead, but Nova Southeastern went on an 8-0 run after three-pointers from Zeyno Seren and Mackenzie Steele. The Sharks’ lead was extended to 13-6 after five consecutive points from Hailey Conley with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter. India Shepherd and Kyannah Grant both made layups and helped NSU go into the second quarter with a 17-14 lead over Eckerd.

Second Quarter – Kyannah Grant made another layup to open the scoring for the Sharks. The Tritons took a 19-23 lead after a strong run, but a mid-range jumper from Shepherd halted the run. As Eckerd’s lead was extended, Kyannah Grant (2) and Madison Frederick (3) contributed points and lowered the deficit to two points with just over four minutes left in the half. A pair of free throws from Steele were essential in putting NSU into halftime trailing 28-34.

Third Quarter – The Sharks opened the half on a 4-0 run after Kyannah Grant and Seren hit back-to-back layups. Eckerd answered with a 6-0 run of its own, but it was ended after consecutive tough layups from Kyannah Grant. NSU lowered its deficit to 39-46 after a free throw from Sarei McGill and a layup from Conley with just over two minutes left in the third quarter. The Tritons caught fire at the end of the third, but a deep three-pointer from Steele helped put the Sharks into the final quarter trailing 42-54.

Fourth Quarter – NSU opened the fourth quarter on a 4-0 run, with Frederick and Steele both making a free throw and Seren making a layup. The Sharks caught fire with just under six minutes remaining, going on a 9-0 run after Conley (4), Kyannah Grant (3) and Frederick (2) all contributed points. Eckerd extended its lead to 55-65 after six consecutive free throws with under three minutes left in the game. The Sharks got back into it late, with Kyannah Grant and Steele hitting back-to-back three-point plays that lowered the deficit to 68-72 with 37 seconds remaining. The Tritons were critical at the free-throw line down the stretch, and despite its best comeback efforts, NSU would fall to Eckerd 73-79.

– The 21-wins are tied for the most in program history since 2015-16.
