Matsgard Leads Second-Half Outburst for Sharks Victory

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Shut out in the opening 45 minutes, the Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team roared back with a vengeance after halftime, scoring three times, including the first two by Louise Matsgard, and the Sharks picked up another key Sunshine State Conference win, a 3-2 score against the Eckerd Tritons on Saturday night.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Score: Nova Southeastern 3, Eckerd 2
Records: Nova Southeastern (6-4-1, 4-2-0), Eckerd (4-6-1, 2-5-0)
Location: NSU Soccer Complex | Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The match started rather defensively, with just one shot for each side in the first 17 minutes. NSU keeper Natalie Robayna made saves on the next three Triton attempts from the 20th through the 25th minutes, but Eckerd was able to get by her for the first score of the game in the 29th. The Sharks had two more chances in the 32nd minute, but they came up empty.
  • There was little action out of the break until a Sharks corner kick in the 54th minute caused an Eckerd penalty in the box against Annie Bjork. Matsgard stepped up to take the penalty kick and caught the Triton goalkeeper guessing wrong to tie the match.
  • Not even five minutes later, Matsgard arced another corner kick perfectly, sending it directly into the net, just past the goal line in the left corner.
  • The Sharks notched an insurance goal in the 80th minute, when Sydni Bostick rebounded a Chama Silva blocked shot and re-directed it into the bottom right corner.
  • As it turned out, that insurance goal proved very important for the Sharks, as the Tritons got within one with just over three minutes left in the game, but fortunately, the defense was able to fend off any further attacks.

STATS OF THE NIGHT:

  • Though the teams were tied in shots, five a piece, at halftime, the Sharks dominated in the second period to the tune of a 9-3 advantage, their aggressiveness serving as the key to victory.
  • The Sharks also had a hefty 9-1 edge in corner kicks, with two of their three in the second half leading to goals.
  • Once again, Silva led all players with six shots, including four on goal, in her efficient 54 minutes of action.
  • With four saves, Robayna improves to 3-1-1 on the season. She has made at least that many saves in each of her five matches this year, averaging 4.8 per contest with a .800 save percentage.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • Matsgard is now second on the team in both goals, with four, and points, at 10, just one behind leader Dani Correa in each category. The freshman has scored all four goals in just four games so far in the month of October, and on just five shots, to boot. In total, 9 of her 13 shots have been on target, for a 69.2% rate, even better than the impressive team-wide mark of 55.5%.
  • The Sharks continue their run of success in the series history, expanding their overall record to 15-5-6 (.692), and 14-2-4 (.800) since the 2004-05 season, their first as a full SSC member. They are also 10-2-1 (.808) at home, winning nine of the last 10 meetings at the NSU Soccer Complex, and 13-1-3 (.794) in SSC matchups.

Matsgard Pushes Sharks Past Tampa in Wild OT Thriller

TAMPA, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s soccer team needed every ounce of effort they had to sneak past a formidable Sunshine State Conference foe in the Tampa Spartans with a 2-1 overtime victory on Saturday night.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Score: Nova Southeastern 2, Tampa 1 (OT)
Records: Nova Southeastern (5-4-1, 3-2-0), Tampa (5-4-1, 4-2-0)
Location: Pepin Stadium | Tampa, Fla.
Get Social: Twitter – @NSU_WSoccer | Instagram – @nsu_wsoccer | Facebook – /nsusoccer

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both teams wasted no time, each with a shot in the first four minutes. After a combined five in a row off target, though, the first attempt on goal for either side found the net, as the Spartans took the lead in the 28th minute.
  • The Sharks kept up the pace with two more shots in the ensuing four minutes, and it paid off for them in the 36th when Brianna Paige intercepted a pass at midfield and sent it ahead, where Dejah Holman caught up and kicked it in from just outside the short edge on the right side of the box.
  • NSU keeper Shannon Hearty made two more saves before halftime to maintain the tie.
  • Both teams had chances to break the tie, but Hearty made another pair of saves in the 52nd and 73rd minutes, while the lone shot on goal by the NSU offense was stopped in the 83rd.
  • The momentum swing came in the 95th minute, when the Sharks committed a foul in the box, giving the Spartans a penalty kick and a golden opportunity to win the game. However, Hearty made the save of the game, and perhaps of her entire Sharks career, jumping to her right to get just enough of the ball to knock it away.
  • A free kick going the other direction was launched all the way up the field by Paige, where Holman once again raced it down and passed it over to Jordyn Pitter, then across the box to Emma Brown and back to Louise Matsgard, who rocketed the ball into the right side of the net for the game-winning golden goal. From staring down certain defeat, the Sharks flipped the script to celebrating victory in a mere 44 seconds.

STATS OF THE NIGHT:

  • The Sharks held a narrow 14-13 edge in shots overall, including 7-6 in the first half and 6-5 in the second.
  • Chama Silva led the team with five shots, four of which came in the first half. No one else on the team had more than two.
  • Holman and Matsgard both notched their second goals of the season. Matsgard’s first was also a game-winner, the lone score in the team’s 1-0 victory vs. Florida Tech exactly one week prior, which earned her SSC Player of the Week honors in the process.
  • Hearty made seven saves in the win, giving her a total of 29 in her last four matches, for a save percentage of .853.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:

  • The Sharks’ last golden goal was off the foot of Emma Heikkila on Sept. 28, 2019, 6:31 into another SSC road win, that time at Florida Southern.
  • The Sharks improve to 6-17-4 all-time against the Tampa Spartans, picking up just their third road win in the series history. They were winless in their first 10 meetings (nine losses, one tie) before earning their first ‘W’ in the 2009 season, a full 10 years after the first matchup.

UP NEXT:
The Sharks will have a full week to enjoy their hard-fought win before returning to action, and to the NSU Soccer Complex, on Saturday, Oct. 16 for a matchup with the Eckerd Tritons. • NSU had attempted two more shots out of the break, the last one coming in the 61st minute. The Sailfish, meanwhile, took four of their five second-half shots in the final 25 minutes, converting in the 67th to break the tie and, eventually, win the match.

Sharks Sweep SSC Women’s Soccer Player of the Week Awards

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The two focal points of Nova Southeastern’s 1-0 upset of No. 17 Florida Tech this past Saturday, both Louise Matsgard and Shannon Hearty were recognized Monday as the Sunshine State Conference Women’s Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week.

The awards mark the first of both Matsgard and Hearty’s careers.

Matsgard won’t soon forget the first goal of her career, as the freshman tallied the match’s lone score in the Sharks’ best win of the season thus far. In the 44th minute, the Swede settled a loose ball before drilling a left-footed strike into the right corner of the net, notching the difference-maker against the Panthers’ SSC-leading defense that allows just 0.71 goals per game.

Hearty, meanwhile, picked up her second shutout in goal this season in the victory. The New York native collected six saves in the effort, none bigger than her stop in the 75th minute on a shot from point-blank range by Florida Tech. She now owns a 1.17 goals-against average in five starts in 2021.

NSU has now won two straight games this season, and six in a row in the series with Florida Tech.

The Sharks begin a crucial week by heading to Palm Beach Atlantic this Wednesday at 6 p.m. For coverage of the action, visit the schedule page on NSUSharks.com, or follow the Sharks on Instagram and Twitter at @NSU_WSoccer.

The win marks the second straight for the Sharks, who now stand at 2-1 in Sunshine State Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Both offenses were relatively quiet in the early stages of the match, with Florida Tech recording the first shot at the 8:44 mark of the first half.
  • The Sharks put just one shot on frame through 43-plus minutes, yet remained tied thanks to a trio of saves by keeper Shannon Hearty.
  • NSU would be held without a shot for a stretch of 16:09, but after going quiet offensively, found some late momentum just before halftime when a deflection found the feet of Matsgard on the left side of the box, who then buried a left-footed strike to the right corner of the net to give the Sharks the lead.
  • Still clinging to the 1-0 edge in the 75th minute, Hearty made the save of the night after stoning a point-blank attempt by Florida Tech’s Alexis Sheely.
  • From there, the defense put the clamps down, surrendering just one more shot attempt en route to the shutout.

Correa’s Hat Trick Enough to Stave Off Late Florida Southern Comeback Attempt

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern needed every one of forward Dani Correa’s three goals, as the freshman’s first career hat trick proved to be just enough to lift the Sharks past a pesky Florida Southern side by a final score of 3-2 late Saturday night. Correa clinched the hat trick by the 63rd minute, extending the Sharks’ lead to 3-0. A late flurry of goals by the Moccasins made things real interesting in the match’s final moments, yet head coach James Moore and company were able to hang on for their first win in Sunshine State Conference play.

INSIDE THE MATCHUP:
Score: Nova Southeastern 3, Florida Southern 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Following an hour-plus weather delay prior to kickoff, Correa set the tone for the Sharks, bending a beautiful, left-footed shot into the left, upper 90 to put the Sharks on the board just 5:01 into the match.
  • Still leading by the same margin in the 55th minute, Correa struck again, this time converting on a well-placed ball by fellow freshman Louise Matsgard.
  • Matsgard initiated the offense once again in the 63rd minute, drawing a foul within the left edge of the box. Stepping in for the ensuing penalty, Correa calmy buried her third goal of the night into the back of the net.
  • Despite the initial delay and a three-goal deficit, the Mocs showed no quit, and erased the shutout on a PK of their own in the 71st minute.
  • Keeping the pressure on the Sharks, FSC’s Caitlyn Lowery came up with her second goal of the half in the 86th minute, all the sudden trimming the margin to just one.
  • The Mocs registered one more shot down the stretch, but the Sharks were finally able to exhale thanks to one of keeper Natalie Robayna’s six saves on the night.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:

  • Following Saturday’s hat trick, Correa now ranks tied for second in the SSC in goals scored.

STATS OF THE NIGHT:

  • Correa’s hat trick marked the first by an NSU player in SSC play since Hannah Christophe accomplished the feat on Oct. 28, 2016 at Lynn.
