17 Sharks Qualify for NCAA National Championship

INDIANAPOLIS, IN. – Qualifiers for the NCAA National Championship Meet were announced, and Nova Southeastern will be sending 17 swimmers to Greensboro to compete from March 9 – 12. NSU will be sending the most student-athletes from the Sunshine State Conference, and feature three – Luca Alessandrini, Celina Marquez, and Savanna Best – that rank as top qualifiers.  

Alessandrini, the reigning Sunshine State Conference Championship Swimmer of the Meet, heads to Greensboro as the top-seed in the 500/1000-freestyle, while co-SSC Swimmer of the Meet, Savanna Best is the leader in the 100-breaststroke. Lastly, Marquez is the top-qualifier in the 100/200-back.  

Nova Southeastern Women’s Swimming claimed their second consecutive Sunshine State Conference title last weekend, with the men finishing second in the SSC Championships.

Sharks Head into Championship Sunday with Lead

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Heading into the final day of competition, the Nova Southeastern Sharks Men’s and Women’s Swimming teams cling to their leads, following day four at the Sunshine State Conference Championships. NSU Men’s Swimming has 625.5 points, leading Florida Southern (624) by a slim margin, and the Sharks Women’s team, scoring 703 points, leads Tampa (652).  

Luca Alessandrini started the night-cap strong, earning his second win of the championship meet, this time in the 500-free (4:20.46), as the three-time SSC Swimmer of the Week narrowly edged out Rollins’ Harold Lockhart (4:20.94). 

Cassandra Wright and Celina Marquez added 37-points for the NSU women’s team in the 100-back, finishing first and second, respectively. Wright completed the race in 52.98, while Marquez placed second with a time of 53.98. Anton Mueller recorded a third-place finish in the event with a time of 48.30, and scored 16-points for the Sharks.  

Savanna Best continued her run of dominance at the Sunshine State Conference Championships, taking the win in the 100-breast by over two seconds (1:00.75) and tallied 20-points to the Sharks total. Robby Spekis was the top perfomer on the men’s side in the 100-breast, placing fourth (54.74).  

Aleksandra Maslova earned another medal, adding a gold in the 200-fly, with a time of 1:58.23, knocking 1.37 seconds off her time trial. The Sharks capped off the Saturday events with a sweep of the 200-free relay. The team of Amilia Nusbaum, Best, Solana Capalbo, and Wright scored 40-points and finished with a time of 1:32.68. Mueller, Martin Hemminghyth, Thomas Flower and Steven Aimable added the final victory of the night for Nova Southeastern, taking the win with a time of 1:19.48. 

The Sharks head into the final day of competition holding leads on both the men’s and women’s side. Sunday’s prelims will begin at 10 a.m. from the Long Center, and the final championships at the SSC Championship Meet will start at 6 p.m. CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL

Sharks Continue Strong Showing at SSC Championships

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Nova Southeastern Men’s and Women’s Swimming continued to set the pace and grow its lead at the Sunshine State Conference Championship Meet on Friday evening. The NSU Women’s team holds a 55-point lead over the second-place Tampa, as the Sharks have scored 460-points through three days. Nova Southeastern Men’s Swimming has recorded 433-points, leading second-place Florida Southern by 49-points.  

The highlight of the evening for the Sharks was the group of Celina Marquez, Cassandra Wright, Savanna Best, and Sasha Maslova breaking the Sunshine State Conference record with a time of 3:37.18.  

May Lowy got the third day started with a gold in the 400-IM, setting a Sunshine State Conference Championship record with a time of 4:15.57. Best placed second in the event, earning a silver, and finished nearly eight-seconds in front of Tampa’s Courtney Sherwood. Jarryd Baxter (3:48.62) and Spencer Hohm (3:52.63) earned first and second place finishes in the 400-IM, with Hohm narrowly edging out Ludovico Viberti from Florida Southern (3:52.67).  

Marquez and Maslova placed second and third in the 100-butterfly, picking up 33-points for NSU in the process. Steven Aimable added a gold medal finish in the event with a time of 46.95. Thomas Flower finished second in the 200-free, earning his first medal of the SSC Championships.  

Competition continues tomorrow at the Sunshine State Conference Championships with prelims set to begin at 10 a.m., with finals to follow at 6 p.m. from the Long Center in Clearwater, Fla.

NSU Swimming Holds Day Two Lead at SSC Championships

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Competition at the Sunshine State Conference Championships continued on Thursday evening, with the 1000-freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50-freestyle, and 200-medley relay. After two days of competition, Nova Southeastern sits in first place on both the men’s and women’s side. NSU’s men’s swimming team has accumulated 255-points, while the Sharks women’s program has totaled 216.  

Luca Alessandrini started the afternoon’s events with a dominant win in the 1000-freestyle, sealing the victory by nearly eight-seconds (9:03.19) to add 20-points for the Sharks. Estelle Bauer nearly managed a sweep of the 1000-freestyle for NSU but was edged out by Florida Southern’s Savannah Brennan. Bauer placed second (10:05.43) to score 17-points for the women. 

Savanna Best (1:59.29), Celina Marquez (2:01.28), and Sasha Maslova (2:01.69) placed first, second and third, respectively, in the 200-individual medley, as the trio registered a combined 43-points. Best’s time broke several records, including the NSU, SSC, and the SSC Championship meet. May Lowy added a fifth-place finish in the event, narrowly missing fourth place. Jarryd Baxter was the lone men’s swimmer to finish within the top-3 of the event with a time of (1:46.50) to earn a silver and tack on 17-points for Nova Southeastern. Alessandro Xella (4th/1:48.15) tallied 15-points, while Spencer Hohm (5th/1:49.58) recorded 14, as despite FSC having two medal recipients, the Sharks recorded more points.  

Anton Mueller and Steven Aimable reached the podium in the 50-free, as the duo placed second and third. 

Nova Southeastern swept both sides of the 200-medley relay, adding a record-setting performance by the quartet of Marquez, Best, Maslova, and Cassandra Wright finished in 1:39.69, three seconds ahead of Lynn, to take the gold. Martin Hemminghyth, Robert Spekis, Steven Aimable, and Anton Mueller recorded 40-points for the victory, defeating their conference foes from Lynn by a slim margin (0.05 milliseconds).

Sharks Lead After Day One at SSC Championships

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Competition at the Sunshine State Conference Championship meet began on Wednesday evening from the Long Center. Wednesday’s events were the 800-freestyle relay on both the men’s and women’s side.  The Sharks won both sides of the event, taking an early lead at the SSC Championships.  

NSU earned the first win of the championship meet, as the quartet of Celina Marquez, May Lowy, Maeve Hunt and Victoria Ortiz finished in 7:23.33. The victory earned 40-points for Nova Southeastern. The group’s time was the fastest in the Sunshine State Conference during the 2021-22 season. Estelle Bauer, Neta Shiff, Solana Capalbo and Allison Kopas also placed within the top-10, adding 14-points to the ledger for the Sharks, bringing the total to 54.  

On the men’s side, the Sharks also earned a victory in the 800-relay, finishing five seconds ahead of the Spartans from Tampa. Thomas Flower, Jarryd Baxter, Spencer Hohm, and Luca Alessandrini completed the race in 6:29.24. The time set a new Sunshine State Conference record, breaking the previous record of 6:30.02, which was set by Florida Southern in 2019. NSU also added 12 points, bringing the evening’s total to 52, with Olle Williamsson, Caleb Fell, Gus Pastos, and Alessandro Xella finished in 6:43.43. 

After the first night of competition, the Nova Southeastern women’s swimming team sits in first place (54 points), while the men’s team is tied for first place (52) with Tampa.  

Thursday’s schedule includes the 200-yard Individual medley, 50-freestyle, and the 200-medley relay.

Sharks Setting Sights on SSC Crown

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A season’s worth of preparation has boiled down to the Sunshine State Conference Championships set for this week in Clearwater, as the Sharks men’s and women’s swimming teams are set to dive into competition.  

The SSC Championship Meet is a five-day event, beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 16, and continues through Sun., Feb. 20, starting at 10 a.m. each day. Keep up with the latest results, live video and meet information by visiting the SSC CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL.  

The Women’s team last took home the Sunshine State Conference crown in 2020, while the men’s team earned the title in 2019.  

Sasha Maslova, the 2019 Sunshine State Conference Women’s Freshman of the Year, looks to continue a run of dominance at both the SSC Championships and on the 2021-22 season. At her first SSC Championship meet, Maslova earned three gold medals (200 fly, 200 IM, and 400 IM). Maslova races alongside Savanna Best, Cassandra Wright, and Celina Marquez and the quartet enters the championship weekend with the SSC records in the 200 (1:39.71) and 400 relays (3:37.95). Marquez, an Olympian for El Salvador, also holds Sunshine State Conference records in the 100 (52.42) and 200 (1:55.93) backstrokes.  

Making his SSC Championship debut is three-time Sunshine State Conference Men’s Swimmer of the Week, Luca Alessandrini. Alessandrini starred in the distance events for NSU this season, earning his honors for his dominance in the 1000/500-freestyles. Alessandro Xella, a veteran of the SSC Championships scene, also earned 2019 Freshman of the Year honors at the Championships.  

Heading into the Sunshine State Conference Championships, the Nova Southeastern men’s team is ranked 11th in the CSCAA and the women are ranked fourth in the country.  NSU Men’s Swimming heads into the Sunshine State Conference Championship with a record of 6-3 on the season, while the women went 9-1, including a perfect 5-0 in conference duels.

NSU Swimming Selected as CSCAA Scholar Team

RICHMOND, VA. – The Nova Southeastern Men’s and Women’s Swimming team have been selected by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) as a Scholar All-America Team. The Sharks men and women posted GPAs of 3.33 and 3.45, respectively, to earn the honor.  

Head Coach Ben Hewitt has led the Sharks to success both in the pool and the classroom, he said, “This is an awesome job by our Sharks in the classroom this past semester. They have clearly dedicated themselves to pursuing excellence and their work continues to payoff. I’m proud of our team and the tradition we’ve set in our studies.” 

Overall, for the Sharks, 39 student-athletes finished the fall semester with grade-point averages over 3.0. For the NSU men’s swimming team, along with posting the highest team GPA in program history, three student-athletes earned 4.0 GPAs, while six were named to the Director’s List (GPA 3.80 or above), and 14 ended the semester with a 3.25 or higher.  

On the women’s side, three held 4.0 GPAs, seven were named to the Director’s List and 17 student-athletes finished the semester with a 3.25 or higher.  

CSCAA Executive Director, Greg Earhart, highlighted Nova Southeastern’s achievements noting, “Coach Hewitt continues, year-in and year-out to do great things. These 46 men and women are some of the best ambassadors that Nova Southeastern and the Sunshine State Conference could ask for.”

Sharks Close Regular Season with Pair of Wins

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Sharks Swimming team closed out their 2021-22 regular season with a pair of wins against Keiser (NAIA) on Saturday morning. The Sharks women’s team won 123-82, while the men bounced back with a 116.5-88.5 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED (MEN)

  • Luca Alessandrini took first place in the 1000-free, winning by over 14-seconds, with a time of 9:43.27.
  • Thomas Flower (1:40.72) and Olle Williamson (1:45.89) finished first and second, respectively, in the 200-free.
  • Jarryd Baxter claimed the victory for NSU in the 200-IM, finishing in 1:53.86.
  • Flower’s second individual win of the morning came in the 100-free, completing the race in 45.95.
  • Baxter added a second win in the 100-back, winning by nearly two seconds.
  • Alessandrini (1st/4:41.59) and Spencer Hohm (2nd/4:46.40) finished top-two in the 500-free.

HOW IT HAPPENED (WOMEN)

  • Estelle Bauer began the meet with a victory for the Sharks in the 1000-freestyle, easily earning the win by finishing over 20-seconds ahead of Keiser’s Marine Lecomte.
  • Cassandra Wright won the sprint-style 50-free by 0.3 seconds (24.85)
  • Savanna Best won the 200-IM with a time of 2:06.98, claiming her first individual win of the meet for the Sharks.
  • Celina Marquez took the victory in the 100-back for the Sharks (55.35)
  • May Lowy finished in first place for Nova Southeastern in the 500-free, while Victoria Ortiz and Allison Kopas added second and third place finishes for NSU.
  • Best’s second individual win of the day came in the 100-breast, finishing in 1:04.00

Sharks Swimming Honors Senior Class

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Nova Southeastern Sharks Men’s and Women’s Swimming hosted Florid Southern in a Sunshine State Conference dual meet on Friday afternoon from the NSU Aquatics Center. 

Before the meet, NSU Athletics honored Rafael’s Chambasian, Laurel Gallaudet, Martin Hemminghyth, Spencer Hohm, Allison Kopas, Sasha Maslova, Benjamin Moers, Amilia Nusbaum, Hannah Trieschmann, Evan Weber, Cassandra Wright and Alessandro Xella, the 12 Shark Seniors, in a pre-meet ceremony.

HOW IT HAPPENED (Men’s)

Luca Alessandrini picked up the first mens win of the conference dual, claiming the victory in the 1000-freestyle (9:30.13)

Thomas Flower was victorious in the 200-free, finishing two seconds in front of the second place finisher. He followed with a win in the 100-free (45.56)

Alessandrini also won the 500-free (4:32.17)

Steven Aimable earned a win for the men in the 100-butterfly (49.68)

HOW IT HAPPENED (Women’s)

NSU had two relay teams finish first (Celina Marquez, Savanna Best, Amanda Kopas, and Brady Estrada) and second (Cassandra Wright, Claire Gass, Sasha Maslova, and Amilia Nusbaum) in the 200 medley relay. 

Marquez followed with a win in the 200-freestyle, finishing in 1:53.56

Wright cruised to a win in the 100-backstroke, finishing the race in 56.07

Best added an individual victory by taking the win in the 100-breaststroke (1:03.63)

Maslova finished six seconds in front of the second place racer in the 200-butterfly, completing the race in 2:03.79

Wright’s second individual win of the afternoon came in the 100-free

Marquez (1st/2:00.87), May Lowy (2nd/2:04.53), Solana Capalbo (3rd/2:11.57) were the top finishers in the 200-backstroke 

Best’s second win of the afternoon came in the  200-backstroke (2:19.31)

Estelle Bauer won the 500-freestyle (5:08.21)

Maslova was victorious in the 100-butterfly, winning by three seconds (55.95)

Lowy was victorious in the 200-IM, taking the win by five seconds.

NSU concludes its 2021-22 regular season with a dual-meet against Keiser (NAIA) on Sat., Jan. 22, in West Palm Beach, Fla.
