Calles Named to PING All-South Region Team

NORMAN, Okla. – Building upon his impressive rookie season, Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golf Freshman of the Year Javier Calles has another accolade to add next to his name after being selected to the NCAA Division II PING All-South Region Team, announced by the Golf Coaches Association of American (GCAA).

Calles tallied seven rounds of par or better, with all 21 of his rounds counting towards NSU’s team totals. According to Golfstat, he finished the year ranked as the No. 39 player in NCAA Division II.

  • Florida Southern and Lynn were left on the outside looking in, both finishing at 13-over par.
  • Following a disappointing second round, freshman Joseba Torres rebounded with a sound (+1) 73 on Saturday to lead the Sharks with a tie for 15th overall at two-over par for the tournament.
  • Tomas Millet racked up five birdies throughout the final round, yet faced his shares of ups and down en route to a (+2) 74. The senior finished the tourney tied for 24th at four-over par overall.
  • Javier Calles cruised to a one-under par effort through 15 holes on Saturday. However, the freshman walked away with bogey-par-double bogey on the final three holes to register a (+2) 74. Calles tied for 35th at six-over par for the week.

Sharks Remain in Contention Following Second Round of South/Southeast Regional

BOWLING GREEN, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s golf team let their 18-hole lead slip, yet despite their struggles on the back nine during Friday’s second round of the NCAA South/Southeast Regional, the Sharks still have every opportunity in front of them. NSU (+10) sits just five shots back of current leader Columbus State, and just three outside of the Top-4, which will guarantee them a spot in the NCAA Division II National Championship.

INSIDE THE TOURNAMENT:
Tournament Standing: 6th of 16 teams
Tournament Leader: Columbus State
Location: Streamsong Resort | Bowling Green, Fla.
Par/Yardage: 72/7,139

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Entering the second round with a two-stroke advantage, the Sharks stretched their lead to six at the turn on Friday. However, after posting a collective score of two-under par on the front nine, NSU shot 11-over par as a team on the back to fall into sixth place.
  • Columbus State (+5) holds a narrow, one-shot edge over both Barry and Lee atop the leaderboard. The final round figures to be exciting, though, as the field’s Top-10 teams are only separated by 10 strokes.
  • The leader to begin the day, Joseba Torres was unable to replicate his opening-round 69, yet managed to hold onto a tie for 11th after shooting one-under par over his final six holes. Torres sits at one-over par for the tournament.
  • Similar to his round one performance, senior Tomas Millet entered the clubhouse on a high note following birdies on No. 14 and No. 17. Millet posted the round of the day for the Sharks, closing with his second straight (+1) 73 to move into a tie for 16th overall.
  • With the Sharks wavering down the stretch, Emanuel Olofsson provided a much-needed eagle on No. 17 to wrap up his round at (+2) 74. The sophomore is currently tied for 38th at four-over par through 36 holes.
  • Javier Calles opened at one-under par through his first 11 holes. The freshman couldn’t maintain the momentum, though, ultimately finishing his second round with a score of (+3) 75. Like Olofsson, Calles finds himself tied for 38th on the leaderboard.
  • Victor Jimenez caught fire with three birdies throughout holes 6-9. However, the back nine didn’t treat the senior quite as kindly, as Jimenez capped round two with a (+3) 75 and in a tie for 47th at five-over par overall.

STATS OF THE DAY:

  • NSU currently owns the field’s second-best Par-5 scoring average (4.75), trailing only Georgia College (4.73).
  • Millet has shot a combined five-under par on the Par-5’s this week to lead the Sharks.
  • Olofsson ranks tied for third in Par-3 scoring average (3.00).
  • Overall, scoring conditions proved a bit easier on Friday, as the field shot an average of 74.07 compared to Thursday’s average of 74.75.

BEYOND THE SCORECARD:

  • Thanks to a pair of eagles in round two, Erskine’s Alberto Avila has taken over as the individual leader at seven-under par, four shots better than Mount Olive’s Olle Ryberg.
  • Top-ranked West Florida fired the low round of the day of (-9) 279 to climb all the way from 15th into fourth.

BOWLING GREEN, Fla. – Flying under the radar for most of the season, the rest of the NCAA South/Southeast Regional field is now gunning for freshman Joseba Torres following his opening-round of (-3) 69 on Thursday. The Spaniard fired a bogey-free 33 on the front nine en route to grabbing a one-shot edge atop the leaderboard. The rest of the Nova Southeastern men’s golf team followed Torres’ lead, as the Sharks posted an early score of (+1) before eventually grabbing a two-shot advantage by the end of the evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • At one-over par, the Sharks lead both Columbus State and Florida Southern by two strokes.
  • Georgia Southwestern and Lincoln Memorial make up the rest of the Top-5, currently at six-over par.
  • The top four teams in the final standings will qualify for the NCAA DII National Championship.
  • Torres raced out to a one-shot cushion over four others thanks to his impressive start. Making his regional debut, the freshman rattled off three birdies on his opening eight holes. He picked up his first bogey on No. 15, yet closed out with his fifth birdie of the afternoon on No. 18 to regain a bit of his momentum.
  • Javier Calles and Tomas Millet both have a share of 17th following identical rounds of (+1) 73.
  • Calles, the Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year, rebounded from a slow start by draining back-to-back birdies on No. 13 and No. 14, before tallying four straight pars to cap the round.
  • Similar to Calles, Millet found his rhythm later in the round, registering three birdies over his last six holes.
  • Emanuel Olofsson and Victor Jimenez stand tied for 27th after posting matching rounds of (+2) 74.

Sharks Excited for Challenge at South/Southeast Regional

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The energy surrounding the Nova Southeastern men’s golf team has definitely ramped up over the past couple weeks. Not only have the Sharks seemed to have found their groove following a runner-up finish at the Sunshine State Conference Championship, but now have their sights set on returning to Nationals for the first time since their 2015 championship season with the NCAA South/Southeast Regional set to begin this Thursday, May 6 at Streamsong Resort in Bowling Green, Fla.

The Sharks know they can compete with the nation’s very best, but will have their work cut out for them, as 13 of the tournament’s 16 teams currently rank among Division II’s Top-25, including eight within the Top-10. No. 1 West Florida earned the top seed in the South Region, while No. 2 Lincoln Memorial landed the top seed out of the Southeast Region. NSU was selected as the No. 5 seed in the South Region.

For much of the season, the Sharks have been led by SSC Freshman of the Year Javier Calles, who has produced Top-10 finishes in half of his six tournament appearances. Over the past month, though, the team’s play has picked up across the board, especially when it relates to Tomas Millet. After a slow start to the year, the senior has produced a tie for 12th and a tie for ninth in each of his past two starts. Emanuel Olofsson has also flashed with a tie for 13th at the SSC Championship, with Victor Jimenez providing a steady presence having finished no worse than tied for 22nd over the course of five tournaments.

With his team surging at the right time, NSU head coach Joey Marino has reason to believe the Sharks can extend their season past this weekend.

“One of the main things we’ve been focusing on quite a bit is to continue to stay patient during each round,” said Marino. “The first couple rounds is just about giving yourself an opportunity. I think that Streamsong suits us well. I expect us to be right there with an opportunity on Saturday to make it into Nationals.

“I think the exciting part about this past season is seeing some of the guys grow a little bit. I think the excitement comes from us having a very good, young team. A young team that’s been able to have this success, it’s super exciting.”

Course Information
Streamsong Resort will play as a Par-72, covering 7,139 yards.

Tournament History
Following the cancellation of the event a season ago, Lynn remains the defending South/Southeast Region champions after defeating West Florida by nine shots back at Mission Inn Resort & Club in 2019.

While the Sharks collectively struggled by placing 15th as a team that year, former All-American Juan Jose Guerra finished tied for third at two-under par to earn an individual bid to the National Championship.

NSU last won the South/Southeast Regional in 2015, paving the way for the program’s eventual second national title.

Millet is the only NSU player with any previous experience at a regional.

Calles Captures SSC Freshman of the Year Honor

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Becoming the first Nova Southeastern player to win the award since 2012, Javier Calles was recognized as the Sunshine State Conference Men’s Golf Freshman of the Year on Friday. Calles was also named to the All-SSC Second Team.

Voting for the All-SSC men’s golf awards was conducted among the league’s men’s golf coaches.

“To be able to come in and be an impact player as a freshman is a big accomplishment in itself,” said NSU head coach Joey Marino. “I am very proud of Javier. He has worked really hard and has played some great golf this season. I know the expectations he has for himself, and I’m happy he’ll be a part of our program for years to come.”

Calles didn’t wait long to burst onto the scene in 2021, placing third at the Saint Leo Invitational – the very first collegiate event of his career. Over the course of six tournaments, the Spaniard has recorded a team-best scoring average of 72.44, adding two more Top-10’s in the process, including a tie for third at the SSC Championship. Calles has tallied seven rounds of par or better, with all 18 of his rounds counting towards NSU’s team totals. Heading into regional play next week, Calles ranks as the No. 41 player in NCAA Division II.

SSC champion Lynn swept the remainder of the big-time awards, as the Fighting Knights’ Agustin Errazuriz was selected as the SSC Player of the Year, while Andy Walker was honored as SSC Coach of the Year.

Peaking at the Right Time, Sharks Selected to NCAA South Super Regional

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Fresh off its season-best showing at the Sunshine State Conference Championship earlier this week, the Nova Southeastern men’s golf team will look to carry its postseason momentum over into NCAA South Super Regional play after earning the tournament’s No. 5 seed this weekend.

The Sharks are one of 13 nationally-ranked programs set to compete among the stacked, 16-team field, with eight apiece selected from the South and Southeast Regions. Tournament action is scheduled to tee off Thursday, May 6 at Streamsong Golf Resort in Bowling Green, Fla.

“After a long year, we are excited to compete with a chance to advance to nationals,” said head coach Joey Marino. “We are playing some great golf right now, with our two best finishes coming back to back. The way we played at the SSC Championship shows we can compete with anyone in the country, and we are excited to do it at Streamsong. The course is going to be an awesome experience for us and I think it really suits our team’s game.”

Following a bit of an up-and-down season, NSU appears to be peaking at the right time having placed fourth at Barry’s Battle and the Shores in early April before finishing runner-up just days ago at the SSC Championship. Front-runner for SSC Freshman of the Year, Javier Calles collected his third Top-10 of the year after tying for third at the conference tournament, while Tomas Millet and Emanuel Olofsson provided plenty of support by tying for ninth and 13th overall.

The Sharks are joined by Lynn, Barry, Saint Leo and Florida Southern as the representatives from the SSC to make the field. Both West Florida and Lincoln Memorial earned the top seeds in each of their respective regions.

The top four teams, and top individual outside of those four teams, will advance to the NCAA DII National Championship, which will be held at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. from May 17-21.

NSU last won the national championship in 2015.

LARGO, Fla. – Behind a tournament-best round of (-1) 287, the Nova Southeastern men’s golf team catapulted into a second-place finish Tuesday at the Sunshine State Conference Championship in Largo, Fla. – tying the program’s best finish at the event since 2015. In his SSC Championship debut, freshman Javier Calles led the way for the Sharks, earning a share of third at one-under par, while Tomas Millet’s two-over par total landed the senior in a tie for ninth overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Sharks entered the final round in fifth and nine shots off the pace of Lynn. Just past the midway point of the round, though, that margin tightened to only three shots following a flurry of birdies. Still, the Fighting Knights managed to keep enough breathing room to hold on for the eventual seven-stroke victory.
  • Following Lynn (+8) and NSU (+15), Saint Leo placed third (+18), with Barry (+22) and Tampa (+23) rounding out the Top-5 of the leaderboard.
  • Two back of Tampa’s Aadam Syed to begin the morning, Lynn’s Agustin Errazuriz (-4) made a charge on the back nine en route to earning individual medalist honors by two strokes over Syed on Tuesday. Errazuriz becomes the 27th individual to win the tournament.
  • Just a freshman, Calles had the look of a seasoned vet – especially Tuesday – as he carded a bogey-free round of (-2) 70. The effort marked his second round of par or better for the week following Monday’s opening round of (E) 72.
  • Matching Barry’s Santiago Chamarro, Millet fired the low round of the afternoon of (-3) 69. The Spaniard shot even-par through his first 11 holes before rattling off four birdies over his next five holes to climb into the Top-10 of the leaderboard.
  • A steady, one-over par round that featured a pair of birdies and 13 pars, moved sophomore Emanuel Olofsson into a tie for 13th overall. His second straight round of 73 resulted in a 54-hole score of five-over par.
  • A late birdie-par finish for Victor Jimenez propelled the senior into a share of 22nd. The senior closed the tourney with rounds of 75-76-75.
  • Joseba Torres shot a solid one-over par on the back nine Tuesday, yet couldn’t overcome his troubles on the front side, as the freshman wrapped up the afternoon with a round of (+10) 82. At 18-over for the tournament, Torres placed 39th.

STATS OF THE DAY:

  • Calles and Millet topped the team with 10 birdies apiece this week.
  • NSU led the entire field with a combined 171 pars throughout the tournament.
  • NSU’s Par-4 scoring average of 4.17 ranked first among all 10 teams.
  • Final-round scoring was the lowest of the tournament with an average of 74.70.

BEYOND THE SCORECARD:

  • Following his performance, Calles was selected to the SSC Championship All-Tournament Team.
  • With the win, Lynn has now collected five SSC titles – tied for second-most all time with NSU and Rollins.
  • Calles was one of just four players to conclude play in red numbers.
  • Prior to Tuesday, Millet’s best career finish at the SSC Championship had been a tie for 31st in 2018.
  • The 2021 SSC Championship marked the first time the event had been played at Bayou Club.

  • Calles shot one-under par over his last six holes en route to his second round of (+1) 72 of the tournament. His 54-hole total of (+5) 218 earned him a share of 19th.
  • Torres carried Monday’s second-round momentum into Tuesday. After opening with an 80, the Spaniard carded rounds of 71 and 72 to climb into a tie for 38th. Torres birdied three of his final seven holes in the final round.
  • The round of the day, though, for the Sharks belonged to Hay, who drained a birdie on the Par-5 18th to close with an even-par performance. Hay’s 11-over par total was good enough for a 41st-place tie.
  • Competing as an individual this week, Daniel Celestino wrapped up play with rounds of 75-70-75 to take home a share of 28th.

STATS OF THE DAY:

  • The Sharks tallied a tournament-high 175 pars over the course of the three rounds.
  • NSU’s collective Par-5 scoring average of 4.60 ranked tied for second among the 12 teams in the field.
  • Celestino was one of just two players with multiple eagles throughout the tourney.
  • Jimenez was one of just eight players to shoot under par on the Par-3’s this week.

BEYOND THE SCORECARD:

  • Barry’s A.J. Ewart took advantage of Jorge Villar of Lynn’s bogey on No. 18 with a birdie on the same hole to earn individual medalist honors by a slim, one-shot margin. Ewart (-2) and Villar (-1) were the only two players in the field to finish under par.
  • Jimenez has yet to finish worse than tied for 18th in any of his four tournament appearances this season.
