Frank Leads Sharks to Series Opening Win Against Eckerd

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Adam Frank recorded two hits, including a two-run home run, and drove in four runs to lead the Nova Southeastern Sharks to a 7-4 series opening win against the Eckerd Tritons on Friday evening from the Turley Athletic Complex.

Top of the Third – NSU got on the board first, as Frank drove in Michael Uz with an RBI single.

Top of the Fifth – Frank added two more RBIs to his ledger, coming through with a two-out, two-run home run, extending Nova Southeastern’s lead to 3-0 over Eckerd.              

Bottom of the Fifth – Eckerd plated a pair of runs in the inning, cutting the Sharks lead to 3–2.

Top of the Eighth – Adam Smith gave the Sharks an insurance run, as Duncan Pastore came into score, giving NSU a 4-2 advantage in the late innings.
Bottom of the Eighth – The Tritons battled back with two runs in the eighth inning, tying the game at 4-4.

Top of the Ninth – The Sharks were able to load the bases with no outs in the inning and the top of the lineup coming to the plate. Frank worked a one-out walk, bringing in the game-winning run, before Pastore added a sacrifice fly and Daniel Irisarri capped off the frame with an RBI single.

Bottom of the Ninth – Michael Dillon earned his fourth save of the season, clinching the win for NSU in the series opener.

NSU Takes on Eckerd in SSC Play

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball team (21-22, 10-14 SSC) is set to take on the Eckerd Tritons (20-23, 8-16 SSC) in a three-game Sunshine State Conference series beginning on Friday evening from the Turley Athletic Complex.  

Quick Facts

NSU is 26-11 all-time versus the Tritons, taking the series victory during the 2022 season.  

Nova Southeastern owns the longest winning streak of the head-to-head series against Eckerd, winning 11 consecutive games from 2015 to 2018. 

Breakdown

Carlos Rey will take the mound in game one of the series for the Sharks. The southpaw holds a 5-4 record, with a team best 2.90 ERA and has struck out 89 batters in 71.1 innings. Last season, Rey tossed four innings of shutout baseball, while striking out five, to earn his third win of the year against Eckerd.  

Duncan Pastore needs one hit during the season to reach 200 for his Sharks career. Pastore has 56 hits on the campaign, in 43 games, and holds a 0.352/0.453/0.446 slash line.

Sharks Celebrate 20 Seniors in Doubleheader Action

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Baseball team lost a pair of games on Saturday afternoon, falling to Barry 4-3 in game one and 6-2 in game two. The Sharks were led by a dominant outing from Matt Kavanaugh, who pitched 6.1 no-hit innings in game two of the Sunshine State Conference matchup.

Prior to today’s double-header, NSU athletics honored 20 seniors, Duncan Pastore, Ricky Shimko, Stephen Schissler, Michael Uz, Jason Acker, Danny Vazquez, Jarrett Bond, Bryce Hazzard, Jarret Krzyzanowski, Ihosvany Castañeda, Adam Frank, Matt Kavanaugh, Liam Loging, Daniel Irisarri, Michael Dillon, Jarrett Hall, Tyler Epstein, Cooper Omans, Gregory Delgado and Eduardo Mestre.

How it Happened

Top of the Second – The Buccaneers opened the scoring with an RBI-double to center field.

Bottom of the Second – Adam Smith led off the inning with a base hit and was advanced to third after a double from Kristian Noriega. A sacrifice fly from Stephen Schissler scored Smith, tying the game 1-1. The Sharks took a 2-1 lead after a base-hit from Gregory Delgado drove in Noriega.

Top of the Third – Barry regained its lead, earning a 3-2 advantage after a pair of hits.

Top of the Sixth – An RBI-groundout extended the Buccaneers’ lead to 4-2.

Bottom of the Eighth – With one out in the inning, Duncan Pastore doubled down the right field line. Daniel Irisarri also reached base after being hit by pitch, and both runners were advanced after a wild pitch. The Sharks added another run, lowering its deficit to 4-3 after a sacrifice fly from Smith scored Pastore.

Bottom of the Ninth – The Sharks were unable to pick up any runs in the final frame, and fell 4-3 to the Buccaneers in game one of the double-header.

How it Happened

Top of the First – Barry jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a solo home-run to right field.

Bottom of the First – The Sharks loaded the bases with one out, with Michael Uz (1B), Duncan Pastore (1B) and Daniel Irisarri (BB) all reaching safely. Adam Smith put the Sharks on top 2-1 after driving in Uz and Pastore while reaching on a fielder’s choice.

Top of the Third – A pair of homeruns helped the Buccaneers regain a 6-2 lead after a five-run outburst in the third.

Pitcher Matt Kavanaugh took the mound with two outs in top of the third in relief of Frank Ellisalt after a tough outing. After entering the game, Kavanaugh dominated the Buccaneers, throwing 6.1 no-hit innings with five strikeouts.

Bottom of the Ninth – The Sharks failed to get any runs on the board, falling 6-2 in the second leg of the double-header.

What's Next

The Sharks will return to the field on Friday, May 5 for a road matchup with Eckerd in St. Petersburg, Fla. First-pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Rey Leads NSU to Victory Over Barry

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Led by Carlos Rey’s complete game, the first for the Sharks since JP Williams in 2021, the Sharks stifled the Barry Buccaneers, taking a 6-1 victory in the Sunshine State Conference showdown on Friday night from the NSU Baseball Complex.

Coach's Corner

Head Coach Laz Gutierrez – When you win it feels good but definitely when you play a complete game. We played well in all areas, we maximized innings offensively, defensively we played clean baseball, and Carlos Rey on the mound was incredible. 
 

How it Happened

Bottom of the First – After a leadoff double to left field for Michael Uz, the Sharks were able to bring him home after a series of ground balls. Sharks take an early 1-0 lead.

Top of the Second – Barry was able to tie up the game at 1 after an RBI single to right field.

Bottom of the Second – After back-to-back singles from Kristian Noriega and Adam Smith to open the bottom half of the inning, the Sharks were unable to bring a run in, keeping the game tied at 1.

Top of the Fourth – Duncan Pastore opened the inning by making an impressive snag in foul territory to get the first batter out. After back-to-back singles, the Sharks got out of the inning after a 5-4-3 double play.

Top of the Seventh – Carlos Rey remained dominant on the mound, getting in and out of the inning quickly, striking out two batters. Game remains tied at 1.

Bottom of the Seventh – The bats came alive in the seventh for the Sharks. A leadoff single up the middle for Derek Bermudez and an infield single for Michael Uz, helped set up Adam Frank for an RBI single, bringing home Bermudez. Duncan Pastore followed up with an RBI single, bringing home Uz. The Sharks then opened the game wide open after a Daniel Irisarri three-run home run, giving the Sharks a 6-1 lead.

Top of the Ninth – Carlos Rey came back out for the final inning and made quick work, retiring the side, securing Rey the complete game, and NSU the 6-1 victory.

What's Next

The Sharks will return to the diamond on Saturday, April 29 for a doubleheader with Barry at the NSU Baseball Complex, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Senior Day festivities will begin at 12:00 p.m.

Sharks Earn 20th Win, Beat PBA in Rain Shortened Contest

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Baseball team won its 20th game of the season on Tuesday evening, defeating Palm Beach Atlantic 8-5. The Sharks were led by a four-RBI performance from Ihosvany Castañeda in the victory.

How it Happened
Top of the First – The Sailfish led off the game with a base-hit and jumped out to a 1-0 lead after a base-hit through the middle.

Bottom of the First – Bryce Hazzard led off the inning with a base hit through the right side and Adam Frank reached base after being hit by pitch. With one out, the Sharks took a 2-1 lead after a double to left center from Daniel Irisarri drove in both runners.

Top of the Fourth – PBA took a 3-2 lead after a two-run homerun down the right field line.

Top of the Fifth – Palm Beach Atlantic’s lead was extended to 5-2 after a pair of RBI base-hits.

Bottom of the Fifth – Jarrett Hall reached on error to open the inning, and a clutch, two-run homerun to center field from Ihosvany Castañeda lowered the Sharks’ deficit to 5-4 after five innings.

Bottom of the Sixth – Irisarri (1B) and Kristian Noriega (BB) reached base safely to open the inning. With one out, Derek Bermudez singled through the middle and drove in Irrisarri, tying the game 5-5. A base-hit from Hall loaded the bases for the Sharks with one down. Castañeda was clutch once again, doubling to center field and driving in Noriega and Bermudez to give NSU a 7-5 lead, its first of the game. A sacrifice fly from Hazzard drove in Hall and extended the Sharks’ lead to 8-5.

Bottom of the Seventh – The game was called due to inclement weather, resulting in a 8-5 for the Sharks over the Sailfish.

NSU Falls in Series Finale to Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The finale of the three-game series between the Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball team and the Lynn Fighting Knights was a pitcher’s duel, as both teams were held out of the hit column until the sixth inning. NSU dropped the third game of the series, 2-1.

Pitching set the tone for both the Sharks and the Fighting Knights in the first half of the contest, as both starting pitchers Frank Elissalt and Lynn’s Dwyer held their opposing lineups out of the hit column through four innings.  

Bottom of the Sixth – After recording the first hit of the game in the fifth inning, Lynn recorded back-to-back doubles with two outs and took a 1-0 lead.  

Top of the Eighth – The Sharks got onto the hit column with a lead-off single by Kristian Noriega. Later in the inning, Ihosvany Castaneda recorded an RBI single, bringing in Noriega as the tying run.  

Bottom of the Eighth – The Sharks recorded the first two outs in the inning before Lynn hit a solo home run and reclaimed the lead.

NSU Wins Series Over Lynn

BOCA RATON, Fla. – Nova Southeastern Baseball sealed the Sunshine State Conference series win over Lynn, as the Sharks defeated the Fighting Knights 11-6 on Saturday afternoon. Stephen Schissler led the Sharks offense, going 3-4 with a home run, two runs batted in and two runs scored, while Cooper Omans earned the win on the mound, throwing six innings and allowing just one run.

How it Happened
Bottom of the First – Lynn opened the game by scoring the first run on an RBI single. Omans responded by recording three consecutive outs and ended the Fighting Knights rally.

Top of the Second – Daniel Irisarri made an impact at the plate and on the bases, leading the inning off with a double to left field before stealing third base = his fifteenth of the season. Kristian Noriega drove in Irisarri on an RBI groundout and then Stephen Schissler hit his fifth home run to give NSU a 2-1 lead.

Top of the Fifth – The score remained 2-1 until Nova Southeastern rallied to score four runs in the frame, as the first five Shark hitters all reached base in the top of the fifth inning. Noriega led off by working a walk and moved to second following a base hit from Schissler. Derek Bermudez drove both runners in with a two-run double and came into score on an RBI single from Bryce Hazzard. Adam Frank capped off the inning by driving in Hazzard on a sacrifice fly, putting the score at 6-1.

Bottom of the Sixth – Omans ended his day by working around back-to-back base hits, as the southpaw twirled his fifth quality start of the season.

Top of the Seventh – Frank led off the inning with a solo home run, his third of the year, pushing NSU’s lead to 7-1. Later in the frame, Irisarri came into score on a bunt single from Schissler as the Sharks led 8-1.

Top of the Eighth – Pastore and Irisarri each recorded a run scoring hit, leading a three-run eighth inning for Nova Southeastern and put the score at 11-2.

Bottom of the Ninth – The Fighting Knights battled and scored four runs in the inning, but the Sharks were able to seal the series win with an 11-6 victory over Lynn.

Baseball Ready to Take On Lynn in SSC Series

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern baseball team is set for a Sunshine State Conference matchup against Lynn. The three-game series is slated to begin on Friday, April 21 with the final game scheduled for Sunday, April 23.

· The Sharks are 7-11 in SSC play 2022-23, while the Knights have a 6-15 record against conference opponents.

· NSU leads the all-time series 24-20 and is 12-2 in its last meetings with Lynn.

· Nova Southeastern won the most recent series, taking two out of three games at home.

How it Happened
Bottom of the Second – The first four Shark hitters – Kristian Noriega, Michael Uz, Derek Bermudez and Stephen Schissler – all reached base in the inning, as Schissler drove in a pair of runs to give NSU an early 2-0 lead.

Bottom of the Third – After Daniel Irisarri led off the inning with a single, Michael Uz drove him in with a sacrifice fly to extend Nova Southeastern’s lead to 3-0.
