Clutch Play from Ellis Leads #22 Sharks to Gritty SSC Victory over Tritons

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team took down the Eckerd Tritons in a thrilling overtime matchup on Saturday afternoon at the George W. Jenkins Field House. A season-high 29 points from Alana Ellis helped propel the Sharks to the SSC victory.

How it Happened

First Half – Both teams came out trading buckets in the first quarter. As the quarter came to a close, a jump shot from Madison Cloonan would put NSU ahead 18-17 heading into the second frame. Neither team could get a comfortable lead as the back-and-forth affair continued. With 1:34 left in the half, the Tritons would take a five-point advantage but a three-pointer from Alana Ellis and a layup by Madison Cloonan tied the game at 34 apiece as they headed into the halftime break.  

Second Half – Madison Cloonan picked up where she left off, knocking down a jump shot to put NSU up two. At the 5:34 mark of the third quarter, Corina Conley jump-started a 7-0 Shark run to go up 47-40. Eckerd never wavered, clawing back and cutting their deficit to two points heading into the fourth quarter. Ellis came alive in the fourth, scoring seven of the Sharks first 11 points to put NSU ahead 61-54. The rest of the quarter featured a back-and-forth battle with Eckerd tying the game at 67 apiece. The Tritons would then take a three-point lead with 17 seconds left but a big three-pointer from Alana Ellis brought the score to 70-70, sending the game to OT. 

Overtime – EC jumped out to a 73-76 lead but three straight points from Payton Graber tied the game once again. The rest of overtime then became a free throw contest as two clutch free throws from Dash Shaw ultimately secured the 82-79 SSC victory for Nova Southeastern.

What's Next

Nova Southeastern will stay on the road as they head to West Palm Beach on Wednesday, January 8th to take on Palm Beach Atlantic in an SSC showdown. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

#22 Sharks Kick Off 2025 with Upset Victory Over #12 Spartans

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – In a rematch of last year’s Sweet 16 matchup, the Nova Southeastern women’s basketball team started 2025 with a bang, taking down the Tampa Spartans in tonight’s SSC duel. Hot shooting from Aubrey Stupp (24 points) led the Sharks to the 63-53 upset victory.

How it Happened

First Half – Corina Conley got the scoring started for NSU with a tough finish inside. Both teams then began to trade baskets throughout the rest of the quarter before back-to-back three pointers from Dash Shaw and Aubrey Stupp put NSU ahead 18-9 as they headed into the second quarter. Tampa kicked off the second quarter with a 7-2 run to cut NSU’s lead to four points. Shortly after, Stupp’s three-point barrage continued as she knocked down a three-pointer to put the Sharks up 23-16. Two minutes later, Stupp picked up where she left off, scoring back-to-back baskets bringing NSU’s lead to 27-20. UT stayed solid, scoring a couple late buckets to cut their deficit to five points heading into the halftime break. 

Second Half – At the 5:59 mark a layup from Stupp pushed NSU ahead 40-30, their biggest lead of the game. Tampa then cut the Sharks lead to just five points but five consecutive points from Jess Moors and Mercedes Simmons put NSU ahead 45-35, ultimately leading to a 46-38 Shark advantage going into the final frame. Tampa came out aggressive and cut the Sharks lead to 48-44 but then NSU would go on a 12-3 run to go ahead 60-47. Nova Southeastern continued to keep their foot on the gas pedal and secured tonight’s New Years matchup against the Tampa Spartans 63-53.

#22 Sharks Rout Georgian Court, Earn Third Straight Win

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Women’s Basketball team closed out the NSU Thanksgiving classic with a dominant victory over Georgian Court Saturday afternoon from the Rick Case Arena. NSU’s pesky defense, led by six steals from Jess Moors, propelled the Sharks to a 100-34 win over the Lions.

How it Happened

First Half – The Lions jumped out to a 4-2 lead before seven consecutive points from Corina Conley (5) and Mercedes Simmons (2) put the Sharks up 9-4. The offensive onslaught for NSU continued as they would finish the quarter on a 17-4 run to take a commanding 18-point advantage heading into the second quarter. Georgian Court kicked off the second quarter with a jump shot to end NSU’s run. The Sharks defense would hold the Lions scoreless for the remainder of the half. A three-pointer from Corina Conley jump-started the 30-2 quarter for NSU, capped off by free throws from Payton Graber. The Sharks headed into the half with a 56-10 lead, the lowest points allowed in a half by Nova Southeastern since they held Alabama Huntsville to 13 points during the 2014-15 campaign.  

Second Half – Back-to-back buckets from Simmons and Madison Cloonan put the Sharks ahead 50 points two minutes into the second half. The Lions picked up the intensity in the third quarter, but NSU’s swarming defense continued to wreak havoc as they held onto a 79-22 lead going into the final frame. The Sharks kept their foot on the gas pedal in the fourth quarter, ultimately securing Saturday afternoon’s matchup against Georgian Court 100-34.

#22 Sharks Take Down Shaw in Home Opener

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Women’s Basketball team opened up their home campaign at the Rick Case Arena with a 79-56 win over the Shaw Lady Bears on Friday Afternoon. Aubrey Stupp led the way with a career-high 22 points, and Mercedes Simmons also added 21 points to capture the home-opening victory for NSU.

How it Happened

First Half – The Sharks started fast as they went on a 12-3 run to get the scoring going, led by Mercedes Simmons, who scored seven first-quarter points. The Bears climbed back to make it 12-9, and then Jess Moors ended the Bears’ 6-0 run, as she scored on a huge and one opportunity. This started a 7-0 run to end the first quarter to make it 19-9. The Sharks kept up the defensive intensity, forcing the Bears to turn the ball over 13 times. Mercedes Simmons (13) and Aubrey Stupp (11) were torturing the Bears’ defense as they helped the Sharks score 22 points in the paint, leading NSU to a 37-23 lead going into the half. 
 
Second Half – The Sharks were getting multiple second-chance opportunities, leading to a 9-2 run to begin the half to extend their lead to 19, at 44-25. The Sharks continued their relentless effort on the defensive end and offensively down low as NSU took a 62-40 lead going into the fourth. The Sharks tenacious defense continued to force turnovers, giving NSU a 74-51 lead with two minutes left. Dash Shaw capped off the game with a putback layup to secure the victory for NSU, 79-56.

Head Coach LeAnn Freeland-Curry – We had a great team win today. Even though we had a lot of trouble with Shaw’s size, we made adjustments throughout the game to help us score. Aubrey and Mercedes were outstanding to establish our inside game early and our guards did a great job getting the ball in their hands. Our players worked very hard on both ends to secure the win. 
 
Aubrey Stupp – I’m really proud of our team today. We limited our turnovers and pounded the paint, which worked to our advantage. We still have things to improve but we are headed in the right direction.

Nova Southeastern will return to the Rick Case Arena on Saturday, November 30th, for a home matchup against Georgian Court University. Tip-off is set for 2:00 PM.
