Fatima Bizhukova Named SSC Athlete of the Week

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference announced the Players of the Week for the week of April 10 – April 16, on Monday afternoon. Nova Southeastern Sharks student-athlete Fatima Bizhukova (Women’s Tennis) earned honors following her performance this past week.      
     
Nova Southeastern Sunshine State Conference Players of the Week awards are presented by Courtyard Marriott.    

Bizhukova collects Athlete of the Week after an undefeated week across three SSC matches. In double action, the Russian and partner Natalie Espinal won (6-1) at the #1 position against No. 9 Raquel Amaro and Victoria Sanchez from No. 9 Tampa. Bizhukova and Espinal also took down the top duos from Rollins (6-0) and Eckerd (6-1). The grad student picked up #4 singles wins against Tampa (7-5, 6-1) and Rollins (6-1, 6-3) before blanking Eckerd’s #3 (6-0, 6-0). With the play of Bizhukova, NSU locks down the #2 seed in the 2023 SSC tournament.

#3 Sharks in Fourth Place after Day One at SSC Championships

DADE CITY, Fla. – Freshman Olivia Grønborg fired an opening round of (-3) 69 on Sunday to climb into a tie for second, just one back of the lead at the 2023 Sunshine State Conference Women’s Golf Championship. As a team, Nova Southeastern currently stands in fourth on the leader board at 10-over par.

How it Happened
·Lynn owns the 18-stroke lead at even-par, five strokes better than Saint Leo (+5).

· After double bogeying hole one, Olivia Grønborg dialed back in and eagled hole two. After making the turn at one-under, Grønborg continued to have a nice day, finishing tied for second (-3) and sitting one-stroke behind leader Sara Ericsson (Lynn).

· Ellen Andersson and Ellen Ramstedt finished the day shooting (+4) 76, giving them both a share of 20th, while Hannah Mitterberger sits right behind them tied for 26th after shooting (+5) 77.

· At eleven-over par, Emma Larsen wrapped up round one in a tie for 44th.

Shark Standouts
 NSU sits in a tie in second for the best Par-5 scoring average in round one (5.00).

· Grønborg is tied for second for most birdies in the opening round (6).

NSU Drops Series Finale to Mocs

LAKE WORTH, Fla. – Nova Southeastern Baseball dropped the finale of the Sunshine State Conference series against the Florida Southern Moccasins on Sunday afternoon, losing 17-7.

How it Happened
Bottom of the Second – The first four Shark hitters – Kristian Noriega, Michael Uz, Derek Bermudez and Stephen Schissler – all reached base in the inning, as Schissler drove in a pair of runs to give NSU an early 2-0 lead.

Bottom of the Third – After Daniel Irisarri led off the inning with a single, Michael Uz drove him in with a sacrifice fly to extend Nova Southeastern’s lead to 3-0.

Top of the Fifth – Florida Southern rallied with two outs in the inning and scored two runs on a double and put the score at 3-2.

Top of the Sixth – The Mocs continued their momentum in their next at-bat, scoring four runs in the inning – including a two-run home run – and took a 6-3 lead over NSU.

Bottom of the Sixth – Schissler continued to produce at the plate and led off the frame with a solo home run. Following Ryan Cainzos reaching base, Adam Frank drilled a two-run home run and tied the game at 6-6.

Top of the Seventh – Florida Southern scored five runs in the top half of the inning, clubbing a pair of home runs, and led 11-6 over NSU.

Top of the Ninth – The Mocs scored six runs in the frame, adding another home run, and led 17-6 over the Sharks.

Bottom of the Ninth – Justin Wachs came into score on a wild pitch, but the comeback effort ended shortly thereafter, as NSU dropped the series finale to Florida Southern.

NSU travels to take on Lynn in a Sunshine State Conference series beginning on Friday, April 21. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.

#2 Sharks Close out Regular Season with Win Over Eckerd

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The second-ranked Nova Southeastern Women’s Tennis team closed out the regular season on Sunday morning with a 7-0 victory over the Eckerd Tritons. The Sharks finished the regular season on an eight-match win streak.

Sharks Win SSC Series Against Florida Southern

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team split its double-header with Sunshine State Conference opponent Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon. The Sharks dropped the first game 2-0, but a pair of 2-RBI performances from Alexis Smith and Alyssa Drogemuller helped NSU secure a 6-4 win in game two.

BOT 5th | Florida Southern jumped out to 1-0 lead after a leadoff homerun. The Mocs extended its lead with three consecutive singles, taking a 2-0 lead after a four-hit fifth inning.
 
TOP 7th | Despite placing runners on second and third base with one out, the Sharks failed to tie the game and fell 2-0 to the Mocs in the first game of the double-header.

TOP 1st | Alexis Smith led off the game with a bunt single and stole second. The Sharks jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Alyssa Drogemuller drove in Smith. The early lead was extended to 2-0 on an RBI-groundout from Tia Williams, scoring Drogemuller.
 
BOT 1st | Florida Southern lowered its deficit to 2-1 after a three-hit first inning.
 
BOT 2nd | The Mocs tied the game at 2-2 after three consecutive two-out base hits.
 
TOP 3rd | NSU regained a 3-2 lead after Smith led off the inning with a double and was driven in by Ryleigh Langwell on a base hit up the middle.
 
TOP 4th | The Sharks loaded the bases with no outs after Samantha Burke, Hayley Lynch and Alexi Watkins reached base. To add onto her dominant performance in game two, Smith doubled down the left field line, driving in Burke and Lynch to extend Nova Southeastern’s lead to 5-2. #2 Sharks Honor Senior Class with Win over Rollins

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The second-ranked Nova Southeastern Women’s Tennis team began Saturday afternoon by honoring its four seniors in Julie Razafindranaly, Fatima Bizhukova, Karolina Snita, and Diane Follin-Arbelet. The Sharks then went on to win their seventh consecutive match, defeating the Rollins Tars 6-1, improving to 18-2 on the season.

Irisarri’s Heroics Leads NSU to Walk-off Win

LAKE WORTH, Fla. – Using a ninth inning rally, the Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball team stunned the Florida Southern Moccasins in the second game of the Sunshine State Conference series. Daniel Irisarri hit a walk-off two-run double, leading the Sharks to a 5-4 win on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
Bottom of the First – The Sharks threatened in the opening frame, as both Ryan Cainzos and Duncan Pastore each recorded singles, but NSU was unable to score in the inning.

Top of the Third – Florida Southern got on the board first, recording three consecutive hits which led to a pair of runs before the third Mocs run scored on a balk.

Bottom of the Third – With two outs in the inning Pastore lined a double down the right field line and scored on an RBI single from Daniel Irisarri, putting the score at 3-1.

Top of the Sixth – Florida Southern added another run on an RBI single, extending their lead to 4-1.

Bottom of the Ninth – Trailing 4-1, the Sharks were able to load the bases – with some bruises along the way – as both Kristian Noriega and Derek Bermudez were plunked before Bryce Hazzard worked a walk. Cainzos lined an RBI single to left field, bringing in Noriega and keeping the bases loaded. Adam Frank was hit by a pitch, the third time a Sharks batter was hit in the inning, and put the score at 4-3. Down to the final out, Irisarri came to the plate and with a full-count, he drove a double over the FSC left fielder and gave the Sharks a walk-off victory.
 
Shark Standouts
Daniel Irisarri (2-5, 3 RBI) drove in three runs for the Sharks, leading the NSU offense.
Stephen Schissler (3-1) earned a win, pitching three shutout innings out of the bullpen for Nova Southeastern.

LAKELAND, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball team won its 28th game of the season on Friday evening, defeating Florida Southern 9-2. The Sharks were led by a dominant 3-hit, 3-RBI performance from Tia Williams in the Sunshine State Conference victory.

How it Happened

TOP 1st | Ryleigh Langwell tripled and Tia Williams drove her in on a single up the middle, helping the Sharks jump out to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning.

TOP 4th | Kerstyn Shaw led off the inning with a double down the left field line and Samantha Burke followed with a walk. After both runners were advanced on a sacrifice bunt, Alexis Smith reached on an error that allowed Shaw to score and extend the Sharks’ lead to 2-0.

BOT 4th | After a trio of hits, the Mocs added a run to lower its’ deficit to 2-1.

BOT 6th | Florida Southern loaded the bases and added a run after a base hit down the first base line, tying the game 2-2.

TOP 7th | After Alexi Watkins, Smith and Alyssa Drogemuller loaded the bases with no out, Williams drove in a pair of runs on a single through the left side and gave NSU a 4-2 lead. The scoring was just getting started, as Madison Fine added another run after driving in Drogemuller. The bases were loaded again and a hit-by-pitch from Hayley Lynch, an RBI-groundout from Watkins and a reached-on-error from Smith gave the Sharks a 9-2 lead going into the final frame.

BOT 7th | Drogemuller shutout the Mocs in the final inning, securing a complete game and a 9-2 win for the Sharks.

The Sharks will conclude its series with the Mocs in a double-header on Saturday, April 15 in Lakeland, Fla. First-pitch is set for 1 p.m.

NSU Competes at STU Invitational

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Men’s and Women’s track teams competed at the STU Pre-Conference Meet on Friday afternoon. The Sharks were led by a trio of first-place finishers in Eden Toal (1500m), David Mahnke (1500m) and Meghan McNabb (5000m).
 
How it Happened
(Women’s)
Eden Toal (1st/4:44.70) earned the top-spot in the 1500-meter race. Ally Jakubiak (3rd/4:50.83), Kamila Soja (4th/4:51.06) and Maya Espinosa (5th/5:01.18) also placed inside the top-5 finishers.
 
Meghan McNabb picked up a victory in the 5000 meters, finishing with a time of 23:06.72.
 
Ally Jakubiak (4th/2:28.41) and Julianna Bassano (8th/2:37.18) finished inside the top-10 of the 800 meters, earning points for the Sharks.
 
Kayla Wommack (6th/28.30) and Emma Fitch (9th/31.58) also earned top-10 finishes inside the 200 meters.

How it Happened 
(Men’s)
David Mahnke (1st/4:05.67) won the 1500 meters. Michael May (3rd/4:15.54), Thor Eriksson (5th/4:19.87), Adrien Zambaux (6th/4:26.90) and Sebastian Tenorio (8th/4:27.69) rounded out the top-10 finishers for NSU.
 
Jan Schmeid (6th) earned a top-10 finish in the 800 meters, crossing the finish line with a time of 1:56.48.

The Sharks will race again on Friday, April 28 in the UNF Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla. Events are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Sharks Drop Series Opener to Florida Southern

LAKE WORTH, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Sharks were defeated 7-6 in the Sunshine State Conference series opener by Florida Southern on Friday afternoon. Michael Uz hit a three-run home run, his second of the season, sparking the Sharks offense in the effort.

How it Happened
Top of the Second – Florida Southern got on the scoreboard first, taking an early lead on a solo home run.

Bottom of the Third – Nova Southeastern responded with two runs in the frame, as Adam Smith came up clutch with a two-out, bases loaded, double and drove in Ryan Cainzos and Michael Uz.

Top of the Sixth – Carlos Rey, the Sharks starting pitcher, held FSC out of the hit column until the sixth inning and finished the frame with his ninth strikeout.

Bottom of the Sixth – NSU padded its lead with a three-run home run off the bat of Uz, putting the score at 5-1.

Top of the Seventh – The Moccasins scored two in the inning, cutting the Nova Southeastern lead to 5-3.

Top of the Ninth – In the final inning, Florida Southern rallied to score four runs – all coming on a two-out grand slam – and took a 7-5 lead over the Sharks in stunning fashion.

Bottom of the Ninth – Stephen Schissler drove in Daniel Irisarri on an RBI single, putting the core at 7-6, and the tying run at second base, but the Sharks were unable to tie the game and dropped the series opener to Florida Southern.

What's Next
NSU will continue its SSC series against Florida Southern on Saturday, April 15, taking on the Moccasins from the Baseball Field at Palm Beach State College. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
