Freeland-Curry, Sharks Announce 2023-24 Schedule

After an NCAA Tournament appearance in the 2022-2023 campaign, the Sharks Women’s Basketball team, led by Head Coach LeAnn Freeland-Curry has revamped their roster and looks to make a deep postseason push in the upcoming season. NSU finished last season with a 21-9 record and the Sharks welcomed six new players, three of whom come from the Division I level. 

“We are fired up to start playing this season.  Our early training has been more competitive than it has been in years and that sets the stage for a great season” said Head Coach LeAnn Freeland-Curry. “It’s important we come out strong early since we open with two regional opponents.  We believe we will be ready because our players have been consistently training hard and challenging each other daily.” 

The Sharks new additions include Nicole Scales (Eckerd), Jess Moors (Colorado State), Kailyn Terrell (Brownsburg HS), Alana Ellis (Notre Dame OH), Aubrey Stupp (Purdue University-Fort Wayne), and Morgan Kane (Iowa State). Nova Southeastern returns Sarei McGill, Suzan Kinran, India Shepherd, Zeyno Seren, Delaney Wolfe, Mia Jones, Madison Frederick, and Kyarrah Grant

NSU will kick off the season with a home opener at the Rick Case Arena, where they will host the Gulf South Conference-Sunshine State Crossover Classic and take on Auburn-Montgomery and Montevallo in a back-to-back on 11/10 and 11/11.  

The Sharks will continue their homestand, taking on Purdue Northwest (11/24) and Daemen University (11/25) before opening up SSC play against Lynn University (11/29). After five straight games at home to open the season, the Sharks will then travel to Miami Shores to take on SSC rival Barry University in their first road matchup of the 2023-24 campaign.  NSU will then return back home to face Palm Beach Atlantic (12/9) and Mount Olive (12/13). The rest of the month features matchups at a neutral location against Saint Anselm (12/18), and Walsh University (12/19) as well as a home matchup against Embry-Riddle (12/30) to close out the year. 

NSU will ring in 2024 with a road SSC matchup facing Florida Southern (1/3) before returning home to take on Tampa (1/6). The Sharks will continue SSC action with matchups, at Rollins (1/10), at Florida Tech (1/13), home against Eckerd (1/17), at Saint Leo (1/20), home against Rollins (1/27), at Lynn (1/31), on the road against Eckerd (2/3), and at home versus Florida Tech (2/7).  

The final leg of 2023-24 campaign for NSU includes three home games, beginning with road matchups against Embry-Riddle (2/10), and Palm Beach Atlantic (2/17). The Sharks will then return home to take on Barry (2/21), and Florida Southern (2/24), before heading to Tampa (2/28) for their last road matchup and back to the Rick Case Arena to close out the regular season against Saint Leo (3/2). 

The Sunshine State Conference Tournament tips off on Saturday, March 5th, as the Sharks. The NCAA National Championship tournament will be held at St. Joseph Civic Arena in St. Joseph, MO.

Emily Trieschmann Named SSC Swimmer of the Week

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference announced the Players of the Week for the week of October 2 – October 8, on Monday afternoon. Nova Southeastern Sharks student-athlete Emily Trieschmann (Women’s Swimming) earned honors following her performances this past week.    

Trieschmann, the reigning SSC Women’s Swimmer of the Year, collects Swimmer of the Week following her performance at the 2023 TYR Fall Classic at Florida International. The Lake Worth, Florida product won the 500 Free (4:58.04), the 100 Free (51.73), and the 400 IM (4:23.93) with NCAA “B” cut times. Her performance led the Sharks to a third-place finish with 525.5 points in the meet. The weekly award is the fourth of her career.

Lindner Leads Sharks to Sweep of Lions

SAINT LEO, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Sharks Volleyball team got back into the win column with a three-set sweep of the Saint Leo Lions in Sunshine State Conference action on Saturday afternoon. NSU was led by 15 kills from Nadia Lindner and 35 assists from Madison Cook.

How it Happened

  • Early in the first set, Kate Mihacevich sparked a 4-0 run for the Sharks and put NSU in front 7-5.  
  • Maddy Hooper recorded back-to-back kills and extended the NSU advantage to 15-10 over the Lions.  
  • Nadia Lindner and Madison Cook bookended a 3-0 late in the opening frame for Nova Southeastern, putting the score at 23-18.  
  • Lindner closed out the first set with a kill, as the Sharks won the frame 25-22 over SLU.  
  • Taylor Stockman, Mihacevich, and Hooper all tallied points in the beginning of the second set, giving the Sharks an early 4-1 advantage.  
  • Lindner added two more points to her ledger, extending the Sharks lead to 9-4 over the Lions.  
  • Later in the second set, Nova Southeastern extended its lead to 21-11 over Saint Leo, following a 6-2 run. The rally featured a pair of kills from Lindner, two blocks – Lindner/Aniol and Stockman/Hooper – and a kill from Mihacevich.  
  • Mihacevich put NSU ahead 2-0 in the match with a kill, sealing the 25-14 second set victory for the Sharks.  
  • NSU opened the third set on a 5-2 run, as Stockman led the rally with a pair of kills and a combined block with Aniol.  
  • With the Sharks leading 13-9, Saint Leo rallied to tie the set at 13-13, but Mihacevich halted the Lions momentum with a kill.  
  • In the late stages of the set, and with the Sharks trailing 19-17, NSU capitalized on a pair of errors by the Lions and closed a 4-0 run with a Lindner service ace, taking a 21-19 lead.  
  • Lindner finished off the three-set sweep with her 15th kill of the match, as the Sharks claimed the final frame 25-23 over the Lions.

Saidi, Mahnke Lead Sharks at Ave Maria Invite

Ave Maria, FL. – The Nova Southeastern Men’s and Women’s Cross-Country teams concluded their regular season at the Ave Maria Invite. Leena Saidi and Ally Jakubiak went 1-2 to lead the NSU women to a first-place team finish. On the men’s side, David Mahnke and Adrien Zambaux earned top-10 finishes to lead the Sharks to a third-place team finish.    
 

Breakdown (Women’s 6k)     

  • Saidi earned her first win of the season, running a time of 22:02.5, which was over a minute faster than second place. 

  • Jakubiak was right behind her, earning second place with a time of 23:33.0 

  • Nicole Branum (4th/24:07.0), Bridget McGrath (6th/24:31.5), and McKinzie Winget (10th/24:51.5) rounded out the top-10 finishers for NSU.  
        

Breakdown (Men’s 8k)     

  • Mahnke was first across the line for NSU, finishing in fifth place with a time of 27:21.6.  

  • Zambaux (8th/27:44.1) also earned a top-10 finish. 

  • Walter Samuels (11th/27:48.4) completed the top three runners for the Sharks.

Head Coach Jonathan Carter – Today’s performances on the women’s side demonstrated our toughness; we had five women finish in the top 10. Coach and I wanted the women to experience running a 6K race prior to competing at the conference meet. Right now we feel very confident that they are prepared to run this distance at the conference level. On the men’s side, we had two men finish in the top 10 with the freshman Walter Samuels on the outside at 11th. It shows that we can run consistent times and we’re getting better heading into the SSC Championships.

The Sharks will gear up for the Sunshine State Conference meet, which takes place Saturday, Oct. 21.

NSU Men’s Golf Ranked 5th in NCAA Division II

NORMAN, Okla. – The second Bushnell/Golfweek NCAA Division II Coaches Poll of the 2023-24 season has been released and the reigning national champion Nova Southeastern Sharks are ranked fifth in the nation. NSU is also the highest ranked Sunshine State Conference program and is one of five-teams to receive a first-place vote. 

Through the first two tournaments of the season, the Sharks have recorded a pair of top-10 finishes, placing third in the 2023 National Preview in mid-September and 8th at the Shark Invitational earlier this week.

Men’s and Women’s Swimming Finish Third at TYR Fall Classic

MIAMI, Fla. – Finishing action in the 2023 TYR Fall Classic hosted by Florida International, the Nova Southeastern swim teams both had strong performances Saturday morning. The women, whose day was highlighted by first-place finishes from Emily Trieschmann (2) and Rafaela Raurich, placed third with 425.5 points. The men, who saw Keith Peristeridis, Inigo Marina (2), Marcel Snitko, and Luca Alessandrini secure first-place finishes, claimed third place with 421 points.

  • Emily Trieschmann secured the first win of the day, claiming first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:58.04.
  • Emilia Ronningdal took third in the 200 breast with a time of 2:24.71.
  • With a time of 2:05.72, May Lowy placed second in the 200 back.
  • Trieschmann claimed her second first-place finish of the day, this time in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.73.
  • Rafaela Raurich captured first place in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:02.81.
  • With a of 2:07.06, Ronningdal placed second in the 200 IM.

(Men’s)

  • Keith Peristeridis claimed the first victory of the day for the men, winning the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:32.98.
  • Inigo Marina secured first place in the 200 breast with a time of 2:00.48.
  • With a time of 1:53.38, Gustav Henriksen placed third in the 200 back.
  • Marcel Snitko took first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 45.33.
  • Luca Alessandrini won the 200 butterfly, beating his competition with a time of 1:51.82.
  • Marina took his second first-place finish, this time in the 200 IM with a time of 1:50.92.

Head Coach Ben Hewitt – It was a fun two days of racing. I think our kids competed well, learned from challenges and will utilize lessons learned into the weeks to come. Excited to return home next weekend for the Shark Invite.

NSU Falls Against Eckerd in SSC Play

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Sharks Volleyball team was defeated in three-sets in Sunshine State Conference action by the Eckerd Tritons.

How it Happened

  • Nova Southeastern began the match with a 2-0 lead over Eckerd, following a kill from Taylor Stockman
  • Later in the set, Eckerd took an 11-6 lead over the Sharks.
  • Nova Southeastern rallied to cut the Tritons lead to 17-15, following a 3-0 run, which was capped off by a service ace from Stockman. 
  • NSU dropped the opening set 25-15 to the Tritons. 
  • Eckerd opened the second set with an 8-3 lead over NSU. 
  • Nadia Lindner finished off a 3-0 rally by the Sharks, putting the score at 11-10 in the second frame. 
  • The Sharks were unable to overtake the Tritons, dropping the second set 25-17. 
  • Nova Southeastern took advantage of back-to-back errors from Eckerd and led 4-3 early in the third set. 
  • Olivia Aniol and Lindner led an extended rally Sharks, giving Nova Southeastern a 16-13 lead over Eckerd. 
  • NSU dropped the third and final set, 25-20, falling in Sunshune State Conference action to the Tritons.

Sharks Wrap Up Day One of TYR Fall Classic

MIAMI, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Men’s and Women’s Swim teams completed day one of the TYR Fall Classic, hosted by Florida International. At the conclusion of day one, both teams sit in third place with day two on the horizon.

  • Gustav Henriksen, Inigo Marina, Umberto Marsic, and Marcel Snitko finished in second with a time of 3:20.76 in the 400 medley relay.
  • In the 200 freestyle, Keith Peristeridis placed second with a time of 1:40.32.
  • Marina took second in the 400 IM (4:04.61).
  • With a time of 50.75, Marsic took third in the 100 butterfly.
  • Snitko tallied the first victory of the day for the Men’s team, placing first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.59.
  • In the 100 breast, Marina took second with a time of 55.39.
  • Henriksen took third in the 100 back with a time of 51.95.
  • With a time of 1:23.99, the group of Umberto Marsic, Anton Mueller, Luca Alessandrini, and Marcel Snitko placed third in the 200 freestyle relay.

Crutchfield, Sharks Release 2023-24 Schedule

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The reigning NCAA Division II National Champion, Nova Southeastern Men’s Basketball team is preparing to defend their title and announces their 2023-24 schedule. Last season, the Sharks completed the sixth undefeated national championship season in NCAA Division II history.  

Head Coach Jim Crutchfield has turned the Sharks Men’s Basketball program into a national powerhouse since his arrival in 2017. During his tenure, NSU has a record of 136-21, including a 67-1 mark over the last two seasons.

“We open our season with important games against regional opponents, as both Montevallo and Alabama-Huntsville are perennially nationally ranked. Later in the season, we also host former assistant Devin Hoehn (Bluefield State), who brings his high-scoring Bluefield State team into the Shark Tank,” stated Crutchfield. “We’re looking forward to the challenges of the season, with a roster full of newcomers and consistent performing returners, and it should be an exciting year for the Sharks.”

The Sharks welcomed several additions into the fold for the 2023-24 campaign, as Isaiah Fuller, Trey Doomes, Ryker Cisarik, MJ Iraldi, Jamie Qualley, Kidd Brizek, Camden Andrews, GianFranco Grafals and Ryan Walsh will all look to make an impact in their first season at NSU. Nova Southeastern also returns six players from the 2022-23 national championship season in Ryan Davis, Maxwell Gordon, Mike Moore, Tommy Sala, Alex Mangold and Shane Hunter.

Former Nova Southeastern Men’s Basketball standout Nick Smith continues to make an impact for the program and was named the Assistant Coach following the national championship victory.
Nova Southeastern tips off their campaign against Montevallo, in a neutral site game, on November 10th, before taking on Albama-Huntsville – last season’s NCAA South Region Championship matchup – on November 11th in Miami Shores, Fla.

The Sharks welcome Southeastern for the home opener at the Rick Case Arena on November 15th. After a brief hiatus, NSU returns to the court with a matchup against Bluefield State on 11/26. Sunshine State Conference action begins on November 29th, with the Sharks taking on Lynn at home, before playing Barry on the road (12/2). Nova Southeastern’s longest homestand of the season begins on December 9th, with the Sharks facing off against Palm Beach Atlantic, then Keiser (12/13), Lake Erie (12/16), before closing out 2023 with a Sunshine State Conference game against Embry-Riddle (12/30).

NSU begins the 2024 slate of games on the road against Florida Southern (1/3), before returning to the Rick Case Arena to take on Tampa on January 6th. The following week, Nova Southeastern travels to play Rollins (1/10) and Florida Tech on January 13th. The Sharks continue SSC action with match-ups at Saint Leo (1/20), home against Rollins (1/31), at Eckerd (2/3), home versus Florida Tech (2/7), away against Embry-Riddle (2/10), and on the road versus Palm Beach Atlantic (2/17).

The final stretch of the 2023-24 season for Nova Southeastern includes three home games beginning with hosting Barry on February 21st and hosting Florida Southern on February 24th, before the Sharks travel to Tampa (2/28) and closing out the regular season with a home game against Saint Leo (3/2).

The Sunshine State Conference Tournament tips off on Saturday, March 2nd, as the Sharks look to win their third consecutive tournament crown. The NCAA National Championship tournament will be held at the Ford Center in Evansville, IN., where the Sharks seek to return to see their 2022-23 national championship banner in the rafters.

Grabias’s Four-Goal Performance Leads #18 Sharks to Victory

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Sharks’ offense continues to be on fire, led by a stellar four-goal performance from Luana Grabias on Wednesday night, Nova Southeastern takes down the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 6-0 from the Rinker Athletic Campus.

How it Happened

  • Stefane Rosa faced her first shot attempt of the night in the 10th minute, easily saving the Sailfish’s attempted shot. 

  • The Sharks’ offense got it going in the 20th minute after a goal by Luana Grabias (assisted by Tabea Schütt), giving the Sharks a 1-0 lead. 

  • Moments later in the 21st minute, after another setup from Tabea Schütt, Sofia Suarez fired one in, giving the Sharks a 2-0 lead. 

  • Minutes later, Luana Grabias got her second goal of the match after an assist from Sofia Suarez, extending the Sharks’ lead to 3-0 in the 25th minute. 

  • In the 30th minute, Rosa faced another two shots from the Sailfish, both knocked them both away. 

  • In the 40th minute, Luana Grabias completed the hat trick, getting her third goal of the night after an assist from Dani Correa, pushing the Sharks ahead 4-0. 

  • In the closing seconds of the first half, Dani Correa added to the Sharks’ lead (assisted by Jordyn Pitter), making it 5-0 going into the break. 

  • In the 66th minute, Luana Grabias continued her dominant night with her fourth goal of the match (assisted by Ella Niemelä and Dani Correa), making it 6-0 Sharks. 

  • In the 76th minute, Rosa faced her fifth and final shot of the match, and easily made the stop.  

  • Stefane Rosa recorded five saves, completing her seventh shutout victory (sixth consecutive) on the season. 

 
What's Next

Nova Southeastern is back in action on Wednesday, October 11th at 7:00 PM for senior night against the Eckerd Tritons.
