Nova Southeastern wins inaugural “County-Line Cup”

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The inaugural year of the “County-Line Cup” rivalry has concluded between Nova Southeastern University and Barry University. The rivalry was instituted at the beginning of the 2024-25 athletic year, with points being awarded based on victories in either head-to-head competition or results at the Sunshine State Conference Championships.

The Nova Southeastern Sharks claimed the inaugural “County-Line Cup” crown, outscoring the Barry Buccaneers 11-6.

Scoring for the “County-Line Cup” will be as follows – regular-season SSC contests will have a total of one point to each winner if the teams play just once. If teams play twice in the season – such as the case for volleyball and men’s & women’s basketball – each contest will be valued at half-a-point. Baseball and Softball scoring is one point for the three-game series. For sports that do not have head-to-head matchups during the regular season – swimming, cross country, track, rowing, golf – one point will be awarded for the higher finisher at the Sunshine State Conference Championship.

The Sharks Men’s Soccer team earned the first point in the rivalry, defeating the Buccaneers 3-2 on October 12, 2024. The NSU men’s and women’s cross country teams added two more points to the ledger for Nova Southeastern, as the men’s team finished sixth at the Sunshine State Conference Championship and the women’s team earned the program’s first SSC Championship in program history on October 25, 2024. Nova Southeastern’s men’s basketball team recorded a half-point for the Sharks, as NSU closed the fall semester leading the Buccaneers 4-2.

Barry’s fall points were awarded with a draw in women’s soccer on October 13, 2024, two volleyball victories on November 4th and 9th, and a women’s basketball win on December 14th.

The rivalry renewed in February 2025, with NSU adding another point following victories by the women’s and men’s basketball teams. Nova Southeastern tallied an additional two points at the Sunshine State Conference Swimming Championship meet, with the Sharks’ men’s program placing third and the women’s swim team finishing in second place. NSU added additional points at the Sunshine State Conference Track Championships, as the men’s track team placed sixth and the women’s finished in third place and at by the Sharks’ baseball team taking the SSC series to close out the 2025 season.

Barry’s winter points were earned in softball, men’s golf, women’s tennis and women’s rowing.
