Wachs, DeGoti lead #22 Sharks to walk-off win over #3 Catawba

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Led by a grand slam by NCBWA All-South Region Preseason honoree Justin Wachs and an extra innings walk-off single from Jorge DeGoti, No. 22 Nova Southeastern began the 2025 season with a 7-6 victory over No. 3 Catawba on opening night at the NSU Baseball Complex. Keyler Gonzalez, the opening day starter for the Sharks, threw a career-high seven innings and struck out five, while Federico Zapata earned the victory, tossing 1.2 innings in relief.

How it Happened

  • Catawba opened the scoring in the top of the second inning, taking a 1-0 lead over NSU with a sacrifice fly following a lead-off triple. 
  • Nova Southeastern got their first base runners on in the bottom half of the third inning, as Richard Benitez, Matthew Corpas, and Roylan Quevedo all reached via walks, loading the bases for Justin Wachs
  • Wachs, the NCBWA Preseason First-Team All-South Region representative, notched the Sharks first hit of the campaign in grand fashion, belting a grand slam over the right-field fence and giving Nova Southeastern a 4-1 lead. 
  • Catawba plated another pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, taking advantage of an NSU error, making the score 4-3.
  • The Indians tied the game at 4-4 with an RBI groundout in the top of the sixth inning. 
  • Following back-to-back walks from Benitez and Ronny Medina, Quevedo drove in a pair of runs with a double and reclaimed the lead for NSU at 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh. 
  • Catawba tied the game at 6-6 with a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning. 
  • Wachs led off the bottom of the tenth inning with a single and advanced to scoring position following a walk from Jack Cue. Jorge DeGoti gave the Sharks the walk-off victory with a single up the middle.
