Nova Southeastern and Barry announce “County-Line Cup” Rivalry

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern University and Barry University Athletics Departments have announced the year-long, inaugural season of the “County-Line Cup” rivalry between the two institutions and encompassing each of the athletic programs. The initiative aims to celebrate the Sunshine State Conference rivalry, while also fostering collaboration between the institutions, as well as engaging students, alumni and the local communities.

The “County-Line Cup” will be an annual, year-round rivalry between both the NSU and Barry Athletic Departments and their respective programs. There are 17 total points to be earned throughout the year-long rivalry; in case of a tie, the tiebreaker will be most Sunshine State Conference championships – regular season and post-season combined.

Scoring for the “County-Line Cup” will be as follows – regular-season SSC contests will have a total of one point to each winner if the teams play just once. If teams play twice in the season – such as the case for volleyball and men’s & women’s basketball – each contest will be valued at half-a-point. Baseball and Softball scoring is one point for the three-game series. For sports that do not have head-to-head match-ups during the regular season – swimming, cross country, track, rowing, golf – one point will be awarded for the higher finisher at the Sunshine State Conference Championship.

John Sung, the interim Director of Athletics at Nova Southeastern University, and Dr. Scott Smith, the Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics & Recreation at Barry University, have been instrumental in developing the “County-Line Cup” rivalry.

“I’m excited to kick off the “County-Line Cup!” Sung said. “This isn’t just about sports; it’s about bringing our communities together and celebrating what makes Nova Southeastern and Barry special. I can’t wait to see our student-athletes compete, while the student body fuels the excitement and energy that makes the tradition exceptional.”

The inaugural games of the County Line Cup were played on Saturday, October 12th, between the Sharks and Buccaneers Men’s Soccer programs, in which the Sharks Men’s Soccer team was victorious 3-2 over the Buccaneers. NSU and Barry also competed in a Women’s Soccer match, finishing in a 1-1 draw.

“Our student-athletes always look forward to competing against Nova Southeastern,” Smith said. “The County-Line Cup is a great way to highlight both universities and their achievements. We think our fans and supporters will enjoy rallying around both universities and supporting our outstanding student-athletes.”
