NSU Splits Doubleheader with #1 Spartans

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Sharks Baseball team split the doubleheader, but dropped the series, to the No. 1 Tampa Spartans on Friday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex. Zeth Rodriguez hit a walk-off two-run home run, propelling the Sharks to a 6-5 win in game one of the twin-billing, but NSU dropped the Sunshine State Conference series finale 8-2.

How it Happened

Game One

  • The Sharks jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, as Bryan Loriga doubled to the left-center field gap to score Zeth Rodriguez and Tyson Cooper
  • NSU added a third run in the bottom of the second inning, with Justin Wachs driving in Landon Lowe with an RBI double down the right field line. 
  • Alex Valentin held the Spartans offense off the scoreboard for the first four innings. 
  • Tampa got in the run column in the top of the fifth, putting the score at 3-1 but Frank Elissalt prevented further runs with a pair of strikeouts. 
  • The Spartans tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning. 
  • Tampa took a 5-3 lead in the seventh, scoring another pair of runs. 
  • Jorge Braceras drove in Boris Peña and cut the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth. 
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Cooper worked a walk, getting on base for Rodriguez. Rodriguez launched a walk-off two-run home run, his fourth of the season, giving the Sharks a win and stunning the top-ranked Spartans.

How it Happened
Game Two

  • After two scoreless innings to start the game, Tampa got on the scoreboard first with an RBI double in the top of the third. 
  • Loriga tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI single, driving in Cooper, in the bottom half of the frame. 
  • The Spartans scored one run in both the fourth and fifth innings, taking a 3-1 lead. 
  • Tampa plated five runs in the top of the eighth. 
  • Loriga added a second RBI in the bottom of the eighth, bringing in Ariel Garcia, putting the score at 8-2.
