Freeland-Curry, Terrell Highlight SSC Women’s Basketball Awards

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The Sunshine State Conference released its 2023-24 All-SSC Women’s Basketball teams on Thursday morning. NSU earned six All-SSC awards, including Freshman and Coach of the Year.

Kailyn Terrell garners Freshman of the Year honors in her first season as a Shark. The Brownsburg, Indiana native has been a constant in the Sharks lineup, starting all 27 regular season games for NSU this season. She led the league with a .893 free throw percentage and shot .400 from the floor and .371 behind the arc. Terrell is the third women’s basketball athlete from NSU to be named Freshman of the Year, the first since the 2016-17 season.

Head Coach LeAnn Freeland-Curry adds another accolade to her impressive resume, being named Coach of the Year for the third time. Freeland-Curry led the Sharks to their first Sunshine State Regular Season title since going back-to-back in the 2014-15, 2015-16 seasons. Not to mention, the Sharks owned a 20-game win streak, the longest win streak in program history while also reaching as high as No. 11 in the WBCA national poll this season. In league play this season, the Sharks were first in scoring offense (71.8), scoring margin (+13.3), rebound margin (+5.3), and assists per game (14.75).

Nicole Scales earns a spot on the All-SSC First Team after a stellar regular season campaign. Scales has been a consistent presence for the Sharks throughout the 2023-24 season, leading the Sharks in three-pointers (48), assists (91) and ranking second in points-per-game (13.7). In the conference, Scales ranks in the top 10 in assists and scoring.

Morgan Kane joins Scales on the All-SSC First Team in her first season as a Shark. Kane has been dominant all season long, leading the Sharks in points per game (15.7) and rebounds per game (8.8). The Riverton HS product has scored in double-figures in 14 of the 16 games she’s appeared in while also notching four double-doubles including a 25-point, 14 rebound outing against Eckerd on January 17th.

Aubrey Stupp earned a selection to the All-SSC Third Team after an impressive regular season campaign. Stupp has made her impact felt both offensively and defensively, ranking third in the SSC in field goal percentage (.492) and second on the team in rebounds (5.4).

India Shepherd rounds out the All-SSC honors for the Sharks, tabbing a spot on the All-SSC Defensive Team. Shepherd ranks second on the team in steals (44), which puts her ninth in the league this season. Offensively, the Belle Glade native has also had several notable performances, scoring a career-high 20 points against Tampa on February 28th.

All-conference selections and individual award winners are determined by a vote of Sunshine State Conference head coaches with oversight and approval from member institution Athletic Directors.
