#23 Sharks Fall in SSC Opener

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The 23rd ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks opened Sunshine State Conference play on Friday evening, falling to the Barry Buccaneers in three-sets (19-25, 19-25, 25-20, 22-25).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Nova Southeastern stumbled to open up the match, falling behind 8-3 before calling an early timeout.
  • Following the break, NSU rallied back to tie the set at 12-12 after a kill and block by Jordan Chessar.
  • Taylor Stockman gave the Sharks their first lead of the set, putting a ball on the floor from Brooksbank.
  • The lead was short-lived, as Barry responded and closed out the set, and defeated the Sharks, 19-25.
  • Chessar gave NSU a 7-6 advantage early in the second set.
  • Nova Southeastern and Barry battled back-and-forth before the Buccaneers took a 13-10 lead as NSU called a timeout.
  • Following the second Sharks timeout, Olivia Aniol, Chessar, Taylor Stockman, and Elizabeth Price all recorded kills, but NSU was unable to take the second set, falling 19-25.
  • Stockman and the Sharks opened the third set with a 3-0 advantage over the Bucs.
  • A small run by Barry cut down the NSU lead to 7-4 but a kill from Price halted the Buccaneer momentum.
  • Price and Cook recorded back-to-back kills, forcing Barry to call timeout, with NSU leading 16-12.
  • Nova Southeastern maintained the momentum following the Barry timeout and added four more points to the tally, taking a 20-12 advantage.
  • Nova Southeastern never trailed in the third set and sealed the win following a Barry service error, giving the Sharks a 25-20 third set victory.
  • After trailing in the early stages of the fourth set, Nova Southeastern rallied to tie the set at 15-15 following back-to-back errors by Barry,
  • Barry took an 18-15 lead over NSU, forcing the Sharks to call a timeout.
  • Trailing 24-19, Nova Southeastern rallied for three straight points, cutting the deficit to 24-22. However, the Buccaneers defeated the Sharks in the fourth set, 25-22.

No. 23 Nova Southeastern returns to the Shark Tank and hosts Lynn in Sunshine State Conference action on Sat., Sept. 10. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
