Serra’s Freshman of the Year Award Highlights Bevy of All-SSC Honors

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Becoming the program’s second consecutive and sixth overall all-time, Nova Southeastern men’s golfer Josep Serra was selected as the Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year on Wednesday. Serra follows up teammate Javier Calles, who won the award in 2021.

Serra was one of four NSU players to be recognized by the league, more than any other SSC program. On top of his Freshman of the Year honor, the Spaniard was also named to the All-SSC Second Team. Both Calles and Mike Hay landed on the All-SSC First Team for the first time in their careers, while Emanuel Olofsson garnered his first-career, All-SSC nod as a second-team member.

Voting for the All-SSC Men’s Golf Teams was conducted among the conference’s men’s golf coaches.

Competing in all 10 tournaments thus far in 2021-22, Serra has registered a scoring average of 72.53 across 30 rounds. He has notched four Top-10 finishes along the way, including a third-place finish at the Saint Leo Invitational, and rattled off 11 straight rounds of even-par or better as part of his 15 overall. According to Golfstat, Serra ranks as the No. 51 player in NCAA Division II.

Hay has led the way for the Sharks with a team-best scoring average of 71.43 while participating in all 10 tournaments this year. Among the 10 events, he has tallied nine Top-20 finishes, five of which have also been within the Top-10. Hay collected a third-place tie at Florida Southern’s Matlock Collegiate Classic and recently tied for sixth at the SSC Championship. He has racked up 18 rounds of even-par or better and is currently ranked No. 23 in the national player rankings.

Calles checks in with the second-highest ranking of any NSU player at No. 35, having posted a scoring average of 71.57 over the course of 30 rounds. The sophomore picked up a pair of wins at the Miami Collegiate and at Rollins’ McDonough Cup that resulted in consecutive SSC Player of the Week awards. He also placed third at Florida Tech’s Panther Invitational and has totaled 19 rounds at even-par of better, including a season-low of (-7) 65.

Olofsson, meanwhile, has earned Top-10 finishes in half of his eight tournament starts, including back-to-back in NSU’s two most recent events. He has tallied 11 rounds of par or better and owns a scoring average of 72.13 that has propelled him to a national ranking of No. 67.

Barry’s AJ Ewart and Jimmy Stobs earned SSC Men’s Golfer of the Year and SSC Men’s Golf Coach of the Year.
