Sharks Nipping on the Heels of No. 1 Barry at The Battle at the Shores

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. – In its final tune-up before next week’s Sunshine State Conference Championship, the No. 12 Nova Southeastern men’s golf team opened with a promising start through the first two rounds of The Battle at the Shores on Monday, finishing the afternoon in second on the leaderboard just five off the pace set by No. 1 Barry.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • On the Par-71 track, the Sharks posted rounds of (+6) 290 and (-3) 281 to put themselves in contention at three-over par overall with 18 holes remaining.
  • NSU only trails current leader Barry (-2) by five shots, while Eastern Florida State (+5) and Lynn (+7) also well in the thick of the tournament.
  • Junior Emanuel Olofsson led the way for the Sharks on Monday and is one of only nine players currently in red numbers at one-under par. The Swede shot (+1) 72 in the morning before tallying just one bogey in the second round en route to a (-2) 69.
  • Mike Hay recorded a bogey-free 70 in the second to move into a tie for 12th at one-over par for the tournament.
  • Identical rounds of (+1) 72 has freshman Josep Serra in a tie for 18th, with Javier Calles in a tie for 26th at three over-par.
  • A wild second round that featured a pair of eagles propelled Jonny Cachon to a score of 72 in the afternoon. Cachon began with a round of 73 in round one to also position himself in a tie for 26th on the leaderboard.
  • Competing as an individual this week, Joseba Torres currently owns a share of 43rd at seven-over par.

STATS OF THE DAY:

  • NSU’s combined 125 pars and three eagles ranked tops in the field on Monday.
  • Cachon shot six-under par across all Par-5’s.
  • The scoring average through the first two rounds finished at 74.75.

BEYOND THE SCORECARD:

  • Embry-Riddle’s Ian Aldarondo holds a one-shot lead over Barry’s Felipe Alvarez and Lynn’s Eloy Vigil at four-under par.
