NSU Closes Day One of NCAA Championships with National Title

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Nova Southeastern Men’s and Women’s Swimming teams began their pursuit of national titles as the NCAA Division II National Championship Meet from the Greensboro Aquatic Center. Celina Marquez, Savanna Best, Sasha Maslova, and Cassandra Wright started the finals with the national championship in the 200-medley relay, posting a time of 1:38.83.  

INSIDE THE MEET

Standings: Men’s – 11th place (43 points); Women’s – 2nd place (129 points) 

Events: 200 Medley relay, 1000 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • The Sharks claimed the national title in the first finals event of the evening with a time of 1:38.83 in the 200-medley relay. The group of Maslova, Marquez, Best and Wright set new records at both Nova Southeastern and in the Sunshine State Conference. Wright finished with the fastest times out of the four, completing her leg of the race in 22.23. 

  • Luca Alessandrini, making his debut at the NCAA National Championships, finished in 11th place in the 1000-freestyle finishing in 9:12.45 

  • Marquez followed up the national championship winning performance in the 200-medley relay with a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley, narrowly being edged out by reigning national champion Marizel Van Jaarsveld from Indy.  

  • Maslova, Best, and May Lowy all added top-10 finishes in the event for the Sharks, scoring 45 points for NSU.  

  • Amilia Nusbaum, May Lowy, Solana Capalbo, and Wright added a top-five finish in the 200-freestyle relay, finishing with a time of 1:32.63 

  • The Sharks closed out the evening with a top-10 finish in the men’s 200 freestyle relay, posting a time of 1:19.67. Steven Aimable paced the Sharks with a time of 19.76. 

Upcoming 

The Division II National Championship continues with day two on Thursday, March 10, from the Greensboro Aquatic Center with preliminaries at 10 a.m. Thursday’s events include the 100 fly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle and the 400-medley relay.
