Sylla Earns Second SSC Player of the Week Award

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Marking the second time in less than a month, Nova Southeastern forward Sekou Sylla has been selected as the Sunshine State Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, announced by the league office Monday afternoon.

As a team, the Sharks have now collected each of the last three SSC Player of the Week awards.

Facing a pair of nationally-ranked opponents in No. 15 Barry and No. 18 Embry-Riddle, Sylla proved to be a man amongst boys, posting averages of 31.5 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting 71.4 percent from the field in the two wins. With NSU dealt its first halftime deficit of the year at Barry on Friday, Sylla pulled the Sharks out of a hole by netting 24 of his season-high 35 points after the break on a near-perfect 9-of-10 shooting. Just 48 hours later, the Brooklyn native followed up the effort with a 28-point, 10-rebound performance, as NSU captured an 18-point lead at halftime en route to an eventual 93-71 victory over the Eagles. The double-double is already the seventh of the season for Sylla, who currently ranks No. 1 in the SSC in both scoring (24.3 ppg) and field goal percentage (62.7%).

Sylla and the Sharks will look to remain unbeaten when they welcome Lynn to the Rick Case Arena this Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 7:30 p.m. For complete coverage of the action, visit the schedule page on or follow the Sharks on Twitter @NSU_MBasketball.
