Late Rally Falls Short as Sharks Drop SSC Opener

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Sharks Women’s Basketball team dropped their first Sunshine State Conference match-up of the 2021-22 season, losing 74-66 to Tampa on Saturday afternoon from the Shark Tank.

HOW IT HAPPENED  

1st QUARTER – Hailey Conley led a 7-0 run to open the game for the Sharks, scoring five points. Midway through the opening quarter, Conley had 9-of-13 points for NSU, as Nova Southeastern extended its lead to 13-4. McKenah Peters added a three-pointer with 2:24 remaining in the quarter, giving the Sharks an 18-8 advantage.  

2nd QUARTER – Peters recorded the first five-points of the second quarter for NSU, putting the Sharks ahead 24-15. A 10-1 run by the Spartans tied the game late in first half, 25-25. Peters tallied a third three-point make, as NSU led 28-25. UT finished the half with the final four points, heading into the break leading 29-28 over Nova Southeastern.  

3RD QUARTER – Back-to-back three-point makes from Peters reclaimed the lead for NSU, 36-33 over UT. Halfway through the third quarter, the Sharks extended their lead to 43-38 as Madeline Hardy made a layup. Tampa closed the third quarter on a 15-1 run, heading into the fourth quarter with a 53-44 lead over NSU.  

4th QUARTER – Hardy added a three-point make to her line, bringing the Sharks back to within single digits, 57-49. Grace Gilmore tallied a steal, and was fouled in transition, capitalizing with two free throw makes, bringing the Sharks within three, 65-62. The Spartans closed out the win, outscoring NSU, 9-4 in the final two minutes.

The Sharks return to the Rick Case Arena on Fri., 11/26, taking on Livingstone at 2 p.m.
