No. 20 Sharks Fall for First-Time since 2019

LAKELAND, Fla. – The No. 20 Nova Southeastern Volleyball program dropped their first contest of the season, snapping the longest winning streak in the history of the team, losing in five-sets to Florida Southern on Saturday evening. The Sharks streak dated back to November 8, 2019, and NSU went 57-9 in sets during the winning streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • NSU started the Sunshine State Conference match-up with a 5-2 lead, as Julia Bernardes and Elizabeth Price tallied back-to-back kills 
  • A 5-0 run by the Moccasins gave Florida Southern a 5-7 advantage, as the Sharks called a timeout. 
  • Following the break, NSU rallied for three consecutive points, to take an 8-7 lead.  
  • An 8-0 run by the Sharks extended the NSU lead to 22-14. 
  • Amanda Hall sealed the set win with a kill, as NSU took set one 25-15. 
  • FSC began the second set with an 3-8 lead over Nova Southeastern, with the Sharks needing to battle back. 
  • Julia Bernardes started a 9-1 run for NSU, giving Nova Southeastern an 18-14 lead. 
  • Bernardes, Brittany Landrum, Price, Hall and Bruna Avila all recorded points during the rally, 
  • Nova Southeastern claimed a 25-18 victory in the second set, taking a 2-0 lead in the match. 
  • NSU maintained the momentum through the set break, rushing to an early 9-3 lead in the third set.  
  • The Sharks and Moccasins traded points, as FSC mounted a comeback before tying the set at 19-19. 
  • Leading 23-22, NSU could not close out the third set, dropping the contest 23-25.  
  • The fourth-set continued the back-and-forth nature of the third set, with FSC being able to edge the Sharks to an 8-12 lead. 
  • NSU rallied for three consecutive points, capitalizing on two Florida Southern errors, bringing the score to 11-12.  
  • FSC recorded 7-of-8 points, taking a 12-19 lead over Nova Southeastern. 
  • The Sharks tied the set 19-19 with seven consecutive points, as Psoma and Madison Cook led the way.  
  • Florida Southern closed out the fourth set with the win, tying the match 2-2.  
  • The Sharks were unable to take a lead in the fifth set, ultimately dropping their first match of the season in five sets to Florida Southern.

The No. 20 Sharks will take on the Buccaneers of Barry on Fri., Oct. 15, at 7 p.m. in Miami Shores, Fla.
