Rain Shortens Sharks’ Sizzling Start at C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Only the weather could stand in the way of the Nova Southeastern tennis team on day one of the C.L. Varner Memorial Invitational, as the Sharks opened the tournament with a perfect start, including a pair of doubles victories to go along with one singles win prior to play being suspended Friday night.
 
Doubles Play
Flight A
As the top seed in Flight A, Zala Dovnik and Nika Kozar earned a first-round bye and will advance to face Rollins’ Kaitlynn Groves and Eve Wasil in Saturday’s semifinal round.

The other semifinal in Flight A will also feature a pair of Sharks in Natalie Espinal and Diane Follin-Arbelet following their 6-1 win over Eastern Florida State’s Kayla Greco and Luisa Renovales in the opening round. Espinal and Follin-Arbelet will meet Rollins’ Alexandra Borg and Georgina Growth with a chance to move into Sunday’s final.

Flight B
The top-seeded duo of Caitlyn Khan and Mille Langaas received a free pass into the Flight B semifinals, where they’ll compete against Rollins’ Natalia Collado Cordon and Erin Yaroshuk.

Meanwhile, Eva Goncharov and Celia Montero Estevan grinded out a 7-6 triumph versus Florida Southern’s Karyna Bazilevych and Olivia Bryant to make their way into the semis against Rollins’ Maria McKay and Polina Vlasova.
 
Singles Play
Flight A
Espinal was the lone Shark to complete her opening-round match in singles play, cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Eckerd’s Kylie Misdorp.

Kozar currently leads 6-2, 2-0 versus Florida Southern’s Isabella Bolivar Garces.

Flight B
Dovnik, the top seed in Flight B, had the day off after earning a bye into the semifinal round of the bracket.

Follin-Arbelet owns a considerable advantage over Florencia Salerno, leading the Florida Southern player 6-2, 5-1 at the moment.

In Flight C, Goncharov and Montero Estevan have yet to get play underway, while Khan’s opening-round match in Flight D was completely pushed to Saturday.

Langaas earned an automatic bye into the semifinal round in Flight D.
