Sharks Prepared for FSU Open

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Men’s and Women’s Cross-Country teams are set to compete at the Florida State University Cross-Country Open on Fri., Sept. 17. The Sharks opened the 2021 season in West Palm Beach, Fla., as the women’s team, led by Ivanova Yanes, claimed victory while the men’s team placed third in a five-team field.

Nova Southeastern will be included in a field featuring NCAA Division I competitors, including the host Seminoles. Joining the Sharks at the FSU Open are Auburn (AL.), Brigham Young (UT.), Clemson (SC), Eastern Michigan, Florida Atlantic, Miami, North Florida, South Florida, and Stanford (CA.). Additionally, NSU will match up with Sunshine State Conference rivals Florida Southern, Florida Tech, Palm Beach Atlantic, and Tampa.

Sharks Head Coach Bryan Hagopian is hoping that the early season momentum that his teams have built through two meets continues and is looking forward to seeing how NSU matches up against both the SSC and Division I programs.

“We’re pretty excited to be going against regional and conference opponents at the FSU Open,” said Hagopian. “Our women’s team is ranked sixth in the region, and it will be a good test to see how we can compete with these elite programs. With Ivanova, Eden Toal, and Kamila Soja leading the way, we should perform well in Tallahassee.”

The trio of Yanes, Toal, and Soja all finished within the top-five at the first meet of the season, as Yanes earned the win to start the campaign.

On the men’s side, the dynamic duo of Joseph Salerno and Trey May lead the Sharks, as the pair were the only two to place in the top-10 at the PBA Meet on Sept. 4.

“Joseph and Trey have both performed well in the early stages of the season for us, and we’re looking forward to that continuing this weekend at Florida State,” continued Hagopian.

The men will run an 8-kilometer race, beginning at 7:40 a.m., while the women will compete in a 6K beginning at 8:10 p.m.
