WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern Cross-Country teams competed on Sat., Sept. 4, from the PBA Rinker Athletic Complex. The Sharks women’s team won the women’s six-kilometer race, in a three-team field, while the men placed third in a five-team field.

Reigning Sunshine State Conference Freshman of the Year Ivanova Yanes paced the Sharks and the race, as she opened her 2021 season with a win in a 42-racer field. Yanes finished the race in 23:12, narrowly defeating Allison Seng from PBA (23:13.7). Eden Toal l(4th/23:47.2) and Kamila Soja (5th/23:47.8) also added top-5 finished for NSU. Maya Espinosa finished in ninth place, completing the track in 24:24.1. Leah Marville (25:02.6) rounded out the top-five finishers for Nova Southeastern.
Joseph Salerno (27:29.5) led the Sharks and came in fifth place, while Michael “Trey” May finished in sixth place (27:36.5). The duo were the only two Sharks to place within the top-10. Patrick Haydon, in his first career collegiate race, placed 17th (29:44.1), while Zachary Pizzo (20th/29:55.5) and Lucas Mardis (25th/30:29.4) were top-25 finishers for the Sharks.
“I’m extremely proud of both teams. Ivanova leading us to a win was a huge win against the number-two ranked team in the SSC,” said Head Coach Bryan Hagopian. “Joseph Salerno did a tremendous job job leading our men’s team to a great finish. Both teams did an amazing job and we’re looking ahead to the Florida State meet.”
The Sharks head to Tallahassee, Fla., to compete in the Florida State Invitational on Fri., Sept. 17.
