NSU Sees Sunday Split Against Saint Leo

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern softball teams split a pair of games with the Saint Leo Lions on a blistering Sunday afternoon, picking up the first game 4-0 before falling, 2-1, in the series finale. With the second-game loss and Friday afternoon’s loss, the Sharks drop the series to the Lions, 2-1.
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME ONE):
FINAL: Nova Southeastern Sharks 4 (W: E. Hess, 7-5), Saint Leo Lions 0 (L: K. Betts, 9-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 4TH | After three and a half scoreless innings, the Sharks were the first to make it on the board.  Three-consecutive full-count walks loaded the bases before Alexis Smith was hit by a pitch to push the first run across.
 
BOTTOM 5TH | With two outs on the board, Madison Fine singled up the middle to plate Tia Williams, who led the inning off reaching on an error and advancing all the way to third. After a Kerstyn Shaw single put the Sharks in scoring position, Samantha Burke scored both runners on a two-RBI single to left to give NSU a 4-0 lead.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
 

  • Sam Sisco was the lone Shark to tally multiple hits, finishing 2-for-4.
  • Fine was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored while Burke was 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Shaw was also 1-for-2, scoring twice, and Juliana Speranza was 1-for-3.
  • Hess (7-5) earned the win, allowing no runs on seven hits with two strikeouts.
     

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
 

  • With two stolen bases in game one, Sisco and Smith are now tied for first place in the conference with 15 apiece.

 
 
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (GAME TWO):
FINAL: Saint Leo Lions 2 (W: M. Mott, 5-3), Nova Southeastern Sharks 1 (L: M. Johnson, 5-4)
RECORDS: Saint Leo Lions (15-9, 18-12 SSC), Nova Southeastern (12-9, 9-7 SSC)
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
BOTTOM 3RD | The Sharks were the first to score once again in the second game as Sisco singled up the middle to score Reece Martin, who reached on a dropped third strike.
 
TOP 7TH | The Lions rallied and stole the win in the top of the seventh, as an RBI-double by Alexis Miniet tied the game and a sacrifice fly by Madyson Coe pushed the score to 2-1.
 
INSIDE THE STATS:
 

  • The Sharks were limited to three hits all game, with three different Sharks each recording one hit.
  • Smith, Sisco and Martin were all 1-for-3 with Martin scoring once.
  • Mikayla Johnson took the loss, giving up two runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.
     

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
 

  • Drawing one walk in game two, Shaw now leads the league with 14 walks on the season, one ahead of her teammate Allie Janowiak.

 
UP NEXT
 
Nova Southeastern will play its final game at home on Friday, May 7, hosting the Tampa Spartans in a single game starting at 4:00 p.m. Prior to the game, the Sharks will honor their two seniors, Mayte Lezcano and Juliana Speranza.
