Track and Field Opens Competition Friday at Peach Belt Championships

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern men’s and women’s track and field teams are headed north this weekend to compete in the Peach Belt Conference Championships at the ERAU Track Complex on the campus of Embry-Riddle, Friday-Saturday, April 30-May 1. The Sharks enter the weekend with 14 performances ranked among the league’s top 10’s and more on the fringe of scoring opportunities.

The Shark throwers have the best pre-meet positioning for scoring chances. Senior Spencer Ochko enters the weekend with a No. 2 PBC ranking in the discus at 42.20m (138-5), also set up at 11th in the javelin at 32.06m (105-2). On the women’s side, senior Jaylynne Thomas won every meet she faced in the shot put, ranking third in the PBC with a top distance of 11.59m (38-0.25). Thomas also ranks sixth in the discus (36.67m/120-4) and eighth in the hammer throw (36.25m/118-11). In the Javelin, there are additional NSU chances, with senior Nadiv Galindo ranking eighth at 40.77m (133-9) and sophomore Christina Adams at ninth on the women’s side at 29.88m (98-0), followed by senior Carly Rothert at 12th.

The jumps could also be a fruitful event set for the Sharks. Senior Justin Jackson sits at sixth in the triple jump at 13.54m (44-5.25), while classmate Abderazek Azlag is seventh in the long jump at 6.68m (21-11). In the women’s field, Rothert ranks seventh in the high jump at 1.50m (4-11) and does come in at 11th in the triple jump with a mark of 9.50m (31-2) – however, her career-best of 10.91m (35-9.5) produced a third-place finish in her last PBC appearance (2019).

The distance races could prove the most surprising for the Peach Belt opposition, as freshman Ivanova Yanes is ninth in the 5,000m with a lone-race time of 18:47.10. Yanes will also compete in the 10,000m without a recorded competition time. The last time she went into a championship an unknown, she garnered the Sunshine State Conference Freshman Runner of the Year Award at the SSC Cross Country Championships, earning third in her first collegiate cross country race.

The Championships commence on Friday, April 30 with the women’s then men’s hammer throw events at 10:00 a.m. The end of the opening day for NSU will close on the women’s 10,000m with a 7:35 p.m. start. The action continues on Saturday with an 8:00 a.m. start for the women’s 5,000m and 10:00 a.m. opening throw for the women’s shot put. Following the 4x400m relays, the closing ceremonies and awards presentations are set for 4:00 p.m.

The meet schedule can be found HERE. Embry-Riddle will be providing a live stream during events at the meet, which will be broadcast on the SSC Digital Network page.
