Women 2nd, Men 3rd as Sharks Compete in Third South Florida Challenge

MIRAMAR, Fla. – The Nova Southeastern women’s and men’s track and field teams earned second and third place, respectively, in Saturday’s South Florida Challenge #3 at the Ansin Sports Complex, paced by the efforts of the Shark throwers and distance corps.

FIELD EVENTS
Representing the Shark throwing corps, Jaylynne Thomas had a quality showing, first winning the hammer with a third-throw toss of 33.85m (111-1) and then also clinching gold in the shot put on a final heave of 11.03m (36-02.25). In addition, Thomas earned third in the discus with a mark of 27.96m (91-9). On the men’s side, Spencer Ochko claimed second in the discus on a career-best toss of 42.20m (138-05), after coming in third in the hammer with a mark of 24.03m 78-10. For the jumps, Carly Rothert snagged second place in the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.45m (4-9).
  
RELAY EVENTS
The men’s 4x100m relay of Cote Strike, Abdrrazek. Azlag, Quynlan Duffy and Justin Jackson took the top spot with a combined time of 44.71. The women’s 4x400m earned second with a time of 4:35.61 for the crew of Maya Espinosa, Tessa Grotzinger, Abigail Kohlmeier and Ellyn Willse.

RUNNING EVENTS
Freshman Ivanova Yanes continues her distance victory tour just two weeks after coming in fourth at the Sunshine State Cross Country Championships, leading the pack in the 5000m with an 18:47.10, well ahead of the crowd, including teammate Leah Marville, who finished second in a time of 19:25.26. Also a high finisher in cross country (13th at SSC), Espinosa took second in the 800m in 2:27.90. In the men’s 5000m, Aaron Weimer and Cody Brown came in second and third, with respective times of 16:19.68 and 16:45.23.
 
Led by Thomas’ and Yanes’ efforts, the women’s team grabbed second place in the meet with a score of 85, while the men were third with 54 points.
 
UP NEXT
The Sharks will see their first gap in the schedule with a 35-day break from competition before the April 17 South Florida Challenge #4 at Ansin Sports Complex. That meet will mark the final regular season meet for NSU and Senior Day for the Sharks.
