Sunshine State Conference Announces Postponement of Fall Competitions

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and with the health, safety and well-being of student-athletes and all those in our campus communities as our highest priority, the Sunshine State Conference Presidents Council announces the postponement of all scheduled competitions in the fall sports season.

For Nova Southeastern, the affected sports include men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s cross country, women’s cross country and women’s volleyball.

Fall competition schedules for the spring sports of women’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s golf, baseball, softball and women’s rowing will also be postponed. It will be decided no later than October 1, 2020, as to whether the winter sports of men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s swimming and women’s swimming can compete in the fall 2020 semester.

The conference is planning on conducting competition for the fall sports and the spring sports in the spring 2021 semester. During the postponement of competition, student-athletes will have the opportunity for conditioning, strength training and other practice opportunities in all sports during the fall 2020 semester, provided health and safety conditions allow these activities.

“As in March, I am saddened to deliver this news that our Sharks now face a fall without competition after months of planning with the hopes of returning to normal,” Nova Southeastern Director of Athletics Michael Mominey said. “However, circumstances beyond our control present us with a different path. Although it was a difficult decision for the SSC membership, it is the right call in keeping with one of our most paramount guiding values – the health and safety of our student-athletes, staff, campus and the broader community will always be our number one responsibility. Our Sharks are an impassioned and resilient group and they deserve the opportunity to play their seasons uninterrupted, and we will focus on contributing to slowing the latest spread so that the spring may provide it. There is no doubt that the impact of this fall’s loss is substantial. However, we are committed to engaging our student-athletes during this difficult time, supporting their mental and physical health, and returning as much normalcy to their experience as possible. I am confident our Shark Family will be stronger than ever when we return to competition.”

We will have more details in the weeks ahead, and will share information as it becomes available. Information will be provided through NSUSharks.com, as well as through our social media channels, @NSUSharks on Twitter and Instagram, and /NSUSharksAthletics on Facebook.
