The Great Trans-Davie Unicycle Ride.  Davie, Florida.  Saturday, February 21, 2009.

On Saturday, February 21, 2009, Mayor Tom Truex will ride the length and width of Davie on a Unicycle.  Please join me along the route to celebrate the Town of Davie's great recreational bicycle/unicycle trail system!  Note:  This is not a parade or a rally--no police escort, so travel at your own risk.  It's a demonstration that it is possible to navigate the length and width of Davie on our recreational trail system, using a few sidewalks and roads here and there.  You are welcome to join me at the stopping points noted, or along the way.  Times and distances are approximates.

The Route (subject to last minute adjustments, wrong turns and other changes)

10:00 AM:  Start from Potter Park (4300 SW 57th Terrace)

11:15 AM:  Arrive at the parking lot between Multipurpose Center and Playground (4 miles)

11:30 AM:  Depart Pine Island Park/Bamford, north through bike path to Southern Orchard Road South

1:00 PM:  Arrive at parking lot outside Robbins Lodge, main building (8.5 miles)

1:30 PM:  West through Robbins Park trail (see photo), across the bridge to Flamingo Gardens

3:00 PM:  Arrive at Shenandoah Park, parking lot North of Basketball Courts (13.5 miles)

Comments:  Yes, I am pretty sure that this 13.5 mile (approximate) course can be traveled on a unicycle or bicycle in 5 hours or less, including stops.  We'll find out for sure on February 21st.  Usually, Janet and I ride on Davie's trails on our tandem bike.  Half the fun of exploring Davie's expansive trail system is in the adventure!

Equipment:  I own several unicycles, which I have used over the years, including my very first unicycle which I started riding about 40 years ago.  I also own and ride a 5 foot tall "giraffe" unicycle.  But for the Great Trans-Davie Unicycle ride, I'll ride my 36 inch wheel "commuter" unicycle.  It's the older model (pictured at the top of this page) of Coker's "The Big One", available from www.unicycle.com.
