In new film, Yitzhak Rabin narrates his autobiography

Yitzhak Rabin, right, and his wife, Leah, in 1968. (Israel Government Press Office) “Rabin in his Own Words,” which opens in Friday in New York, Los Angeles and South Florida, is more than a tribute to the two-time Israeli prime minister tragically gunned down in 1995. The aptly named cinematic autobiography, which uses archival footage going back to the statesman’s childhood, is entirely narrated by Yitzhak Rabin himself. Filmmaker Erez Laufer, 53, designed it that way because, he tells JTA, “I got tired of hearing people analyzing him, people talking about him, both from admirers and people who didn’t. For me, the message of the film is you can kill someone, but his voice lives on.” Laufer, for the record, is squarely in the pro-Rabin camp. Speaking via FaceTime from his home in Tel Aviv — ironically just a block from Rabin Square — Laufer explains that he grew up near the Kadoorie Agricultural High School, the iconic institution in northern Israel where Rabin graduated. “I always had, it’s very hard for me to find the word” — he pauses to think of an appropriate English translation — a “fascination or [been a] political …read more

BananaStock/Thinkstock (HOLLYWOOD, Fla.) — A South Florida man recently helped save his wife’s life by calling 911 after he heard her being kidnapped at gunpoint through the Bluetooth earpiece she had on at the time, according to officials. The harrowing incident happened this past Tuesday when 49-year-old Priscilla Cercone was sitting in her car in front of her Hollywood, Florida, home, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by ABC News. Cercone had just picked up the mail and was talking to her husband via the Bluetooth device when a 21-year-old man — later identified by authorities as Bernard Owens — suddenly approached Cercone, pointed a handgun at her and “ordered her to open the back door of her car or he would kill her,” the affidavit states. Cercone “feared for her life,” so she opened the door for Owens, who then ordered her to start driving, according to the affidavit. Owens pointed the handgun at Cercone’s head while she was driving and demanded that she take him to an ATM after she told him she did not have any money on her, according to the affidavit. Cercone’s husband was still on the phone …read more

Follow CBSMIAMI.COM: Facebook | Twitter MIAMI (CBSMiami) — April is National Poetry Month and to celebrate, a local organization focused on literature is bringing poetry to South Florida. At the famed Cuban restaurant, Versailles, people young and old gather for their coffee and pastelito. “Everyone comes here, they know it. It’s the heart of the city,” said Christina Ramos, from Yo Amo 305. It’s the cafecitos that keep hearts beating but instead of the porcelain cups you’re used to, this month when you grab your drink, you’ll read a poem or two thanks to “Hialeah Haikus” — poking fun at Miami’s unique vernacular using the traditional Japanese art form. You saw that guy bro? He’s looking at me all hard You don’t know me bro! “When you read them, you just immediately get it. But you kind of have to understand the culture,” said Ramos. If you’re not a fan of the Hialeah Haikus, you can find more poetry throughout the Magic City during April in places you’d never think to look. It’s part of O, Miami’s Poetry Festival with a mission of allowing every resident in Miami-Dade County. “It runs 30 days, where …read more
